If OBS’s Network Dropped Frames counter is rising, first check the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server. Test on Ethernet if possible, pause competing uploads, and lower the bitrate to one your connection can sustain during the hours you stream. Don’t start by changing encoder settings: rendering lag and viewer buffering are different problems and need different fixes.
Confirm which kind of lag you have
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the counters while the problem is happening. If Dropped Frames (Network) rises, OBS is having trouble sending the stream reliably to the remote ingest server, or your connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames rather than letting the stream build up a delay. OBS Project describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server: Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
- Network dropped frames: investigate upload capacity, local network congestion, VPN or filtering software, and the route to YouTube ingest.
- Rendering lag or skipped frames: investigate rendering or encoder workload separately; network fixes may not help.
- Viewer buffering: viewers may buffer even when OBS is not dropping network frames. Check YouTube’s stream health and consider the viewer’s connection and playback conditions. See OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting.
Use the counter category and the timing of the problem to guide the next step. A report that the stream “lags” by itself does not identify the cause.
Diagnose the connection before changing settings
1. Establish a cleaner network baseline
- If the streaming computer uses Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with Ethernet and repeat the stream test. This is a comparison, not a guaranteed fix.
- Pause other sustained network use during the test, including cloud backups, large uploads, and other household streams. If the result changes, competing traffic or the local wireless connection may be contributing.
- Temporarily check whether a VPN or security/network-filtering software is affecting the connection. OBS’s troubleshooting guide discusses these as possible factors; change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it mattered. Restore security settings after testing.
2. Test sustainable upload, not just peak speed
Run an upload speed test, then test an actual YouTube stream with representative audio and motion. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; it does not prove that the connection can hold a stable bitrate to YouTube ingest through busy household periods or throughout a 24/7 run. YouTube Help recommends testing upload bitrate and testing before going live: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a bitrate below what your connection can reliably sustain under the conditions in which you stream, rather than setting it right at a one-time speed-test result. If network drops stop when you reduce the bitrate, that points to a capacity or stability limit at the previous setting, though it does not by itself identify whether the bottleneck is your home network, ISP path, or another cause.
3. Check YouTube-compatible encoder settings
- Use CBR (constant bitrate) for the stream.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Choose a codec and resolution supported by the current YouTube live encoder guidance. YouTube’s page lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 where applicable, along with resolution-specific bitrate ranges. Use the current table for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than applying a bitrate number detached from those settings.
These settings help meet YouTube’s ingest requirements; they cannot make an unstable network reliable. Recommendations and supported options can change, so check YouTube’s current encoder settings page when configuring the stream.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS offers Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion in its advanced network settings. When enabled, OBS can lower the bitrate if the connection cannot keep up, which may reduce network drops. The trade-off is lower image quality while bitrate is reduced. OBS cautions that this does not repair the underlying connection issue. Treat it as a continuity measure, not a substitute for finding and addressing the cause. The option and its limits are described in the OBS troubleshooting guide.
Investigate the YouTube route if drops persist
If Ethernet, reduced competing traffic, and a sustainable bitrate do not resolve the drops, compare an alternate YouTube ingest server or connection option if one is available in your setup. Change only one variable at a time and compare the OBS log, network counter, and YouTube stream health. If the problem persists, OBS advises contacting your ISP.

India is not one uniform network condition: city, ISP, access technology, local congestion, router, and route to YouTube ingest can all differ. The available OBS and YouTube guidance is general; it does not establish current city-by-city Indian ISP routing or ingest performance. Keep OBS logs and failure timestamps and ask your ISP to investigate routing or peering to YouTube ingest rather than assuming a provider or region is at fault.
Prepare a 24/7 stream for recurring failures
For a continuous channel, make tests representative of the actual stream and the hours it will run. Record each incident so you can see whether it follows a particular time, connection type, bitrate, or destination.
