Best AWS Elemental MediaLive Settings for a 24/7 YouTube Channel

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a conventional SDR YouTube channel, start with RTMPS, H.264, CBR, AAC audio, and a two-second GOP (keyframe interval). Set output bitrate to match the resolution and frame rate you actually plan to stream; there is no single best bitrate for every channel. Test representative gameplay, motion, and audio, then watch YouTube’s stream health before relying on the configuration around the clock.

Recommended MediaLive starting settings for YouTube

This is a baseline for a conventional SDR stream, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation. Match the output to your source and channel requirements rather than selecting the highest available setting by default.

Setting Starting point How to choose
Destination protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Use it when the MediaLive output and account workflow support it. YouTube encoder guidance
Video codec H.264 A straightforward choice for conventional SDR. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 support, but confirm that the codec is supported by your complete MediaLive output path and chosen workflow. YouTube encoder guidance
Resolution and frame rate Match the source and intended presentation, up to 60 fps per YouTube guidance Do not upscale or choose 60 fps automatically if the source does not provide or need it.
Rate control CBR YouTube lists CBR for live encoder settings. MediaLive also offers QVBR and VBR; use alternatives only when the workflow has been tested and their variable-rate behavior is appropriate. MediaLive API reference
GOP / keyframe interval 2 seconds Set MediaLive GOP size to two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube encoder guidance
Audio AAC Choose sample rate and channel layout to suit the program audio and input mode. YouTube also lists MP3. YouTube encoder guidance
Pixel aspect ratio and scan Square pixels; progressive scan These are among YouTube’s recommended advanced settings. YouTube encoder guidance

In MediaLive, the relevant controls include GOP size and units, frame-rate numerator and denominator, rate-control mode, maximum bitrate, and codec-specific quality settings. The exact console layout can change; consult the MediaLive channel API reference for the control definitions.

What bitrate should you use for YouTube Live?

Use the row for your actual H.264 output resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s published recommended ingest rates, not independently measured MediaLive targets; do not substitute figures from YouTube’s separate AV1 or H.265 columns. The current YouTube encoder-settings page was accessed on October 3, 2026. Source: YouTube

H.264 output YouTube recommended ingest bitrate Published minimum
720p30 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 6 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps 7 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps 8 Mbps
2160p30 42 Mbps 11 Mbps
2160p60 50 Mbps 14 Mbps

The minimums are floor recommendations, not preferred targets. Set the MediaLive output to the recommended value for the selected H.264 format unless your tested workflow gives you a reason to choose differently. A bitrate value cannot be carried over blindly between codecs, resolutions, or frame rates.

How to choose MediaLive rate control

CBR: the YouTube-facing default

YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) in its live encoder guidance, so it is the clearest starting choice for a YouTube-bound output. It maintains a steadier output rate than a mode that varies with picture complexity.

QVBR: quality target with a ceiling

AWS describes quality-defined variable bitrate (QVBR) as targeting a quality level subject to a maximum bitrate. Its reference gives illustrative QVBR values by target device: quality level 8–10 with a 4 Mbps maximum for primary screens, level 7 with a 1.5–3 Mbps maximum for PCs or tablets, and level 6 with a 1–1.5 Mbps maximum for smartphones. These are AWS QVBR examples, not replacements for YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate recommendations. AWS MediaLive API reference

VBR: rate varies with content complexity

Variable bitrate (VBR) changes bitrate with video complexity. AWS says VBR is recommended instead of QVBR when you need a specific average bitrate; YouTube’s separate live guidance still lists CBR. If you depart from CBR, test the full delivery path and confirm that the resulting rate behavior suits the channel.

Optional enhanced quality

AWS says ENHANCED_QUALITY may provide slightly better video quality without increasing bitrate when used with QVBR or CBR, but it might increase channel costs. Treat it as an optional quality-and-cost choice, not a required YouTube setting. AWS MediaLive API reference

Should you use RTMPS or HLS?

RTMPS for a conventional SDR channel

RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended baseline for encrypted delivery to its servers. For an ordinary SDR channel, it is the natural starting protocol when your MediaLive output and account workflow support it. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. YouTube encoder guidance

HLS for particular HDR requirements

HDR needs its own tested workflow. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says HLS may be considered if the encoder does not support the required capabilities over RTMP. AWS’s example for 4K HDR uses an HLS output group rather than an RTMP output group. That is a specific HDR case, not a reason for every 24/7 channel to use HLS. YouTube encoder guidance AWS 4K HDR HLS tutorial

AWS published that tutorial on April 14, 2021. Its example uses a YouTube HLS endpoint, HLS Basic Put, two-second segments, 3840×2160 HEVC at 20 Mbps and 59.94 fps, a two-second GOP, HDR10, and AAC audio. It is a concrete example for that HDR workflow, not a current general-purpose template. Its 20 Mbps HEVC HDR value should not be compared as though it were a YouTube H.264 4K SDR recommendation.

Configure the input specification for the actual source

MediaLive input specifications affect billing and resource allocation. AWS advises selecting a codec, resolution tier, and bitrate that meet or exceed the most demanding inputs the channel will receive; allocating insufficient resources can degrade output. Because input characteristics vary by feed, there is no universal input specification to copy without checking the source. AWS Elemental MediaLive User Guide

For a 24/7 channel, settings are only part of the design. Choose an input and operational approach appropriate to the source and the availability the channel needs. The cited guidance does not establish one universal failover design, so do not assume a particular input arrangement guarantees continuous operation.

Preflight checks and stream-health monitoring

  1. Confirm the destination settings. Verify the selected protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, and target bitrate against the YouTube stream configuration.
  2. Check timing and audio. Confirm the GOP is two seconds, the stream is progressive with square pixels, and the selected AAC sample rate and channel layout match the program.
  3. Test representative content. Preview scenes with typical motion and sound, including the most demanding gameplay or video you expect to run. Check for visible artifacts, audio problems, or unstable delivery.
  4. Inspect YouTube stream health. Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test and after going live; a successful encoder configuration alone does not prove the whole channel is operating as intended. YouTube encoder guidance
  5. Recheck after changes. Repeat the test if you change the source, output format, bitrate, codec, or delivery protocol.

Common problems and what to check

  • Stream health reports a weak or unstable incoming feed: check that MediaLive output bitrate matches the selected format, that the upstream feed can sustain its configured rate, and that the output protocol and YouTube destination are correctly set.
  • Video looks soft or breaks up during motion: verify that you selected the bitrate row matching resolution and frame rate, then test demanding motion. Avoid treating an H.264 recommendation as an AV1 or H.265 target.
  • Playback or compatibility issues: confirm the codec and protocol are supported by the end-to-end workflow. For conventional SDR, H.264 over RTMPS is the baseline; HDR may require a different codec and delivery path.
  • Audio is missing or mismatched: check the MediaLive audio encoder, sample rate, channel layout, and input audio mapping against the actual program.
  • Output degrades when the source changes: compare the new feed’s codec, resolution tier, and bitrate with the MediaLive input specification. AWS warns that insufficient resource allocation can degrade output.
  • Unexpected channel costs: review the input specification and optional quality settings. AWS notes that input specifications affect billing and that ENHANCED_QUALITY might increase channel costs.
