Choose OBS when you need an encoder to send a live feed you control—but OBS does not trigger Vimeo’s scheduled prerecorded playback. For a YouTube destination, Vimeo can simulcast the event, though a scheduled YouTube stream may still require a manual Go Live action in YouTube Live Control Room.
Which option fits your prerecorded YouTube stream?
| Decision | Vimeo native prerecorded event | OBS encoder workflow |
|---|---|---|
| What sends the video? | A video stored in Vimeo is loaded into an event and played by Vimeo. | OBS sends an encoded live feed to a destination using its stream URL and key. |
| Automatic scheduled playback? | Available through Vimeo’s web-based production tool for eligible accounts and supported event types. | No. Vimeo’s scheduled prerecorded feature explicitly excludes external encoders. |
| Operator action | The basic video-to-live flow requires the Owner to start the event. The separate scheduled mode can start playback automatically. | The operator configures and starts OBS. If Vimeo sends the event to a scheduled YouTube destination over RTMP, YouTube may also require Go Live to be selected manually. |
| Best fit | Playing an uploaded Vimeo video as a scheduled event with minimal production setup. | Sending a composed encoder feed when you need control over the signal; it is not a substitute for Vimeo’s scheduled prerecorded mode. |
These are workflow distinctions, not a quality or reliability ranking. The official platform instructions describe features and setup, not a controlled comparison of image quality, latency, uptime, cost, or audience outcomes.
How Vimeo’s prerecorded-event options work
Start an event from an uploaded video
Vimeo’s “stream my video as a live event” flow creates an event from a video’s settings page and preloads the video into the first scene. The Owner starts the event; it is not the same as scheduling automatic playback. Vimeo says this feature requires Advanced or Premium, or Enterprise with the Events feature. Other plans may let you try the flow but cannot go live. Vimeo Stock purchases are not supported, and uploaded subtitles or captions are not displayed during live playback. See Vimeo’s video-to-live instructions.
Schedule automatic prerecorded playback
For automatic start, use Vimeo’s web-based production tool and choose “Prerecorded event” for a live event or webinar. Select the video segments and set the date and time. This feature requires Advanced or Premium, or Enterprise with Events; it does not support external encoders and is unavailable for venues. The scheduled start must be at least one minute in the future. If concurrent-stream limits prevent all scheduled events from starting, Vimeo says earlier scheduled start times take priority. Selected videos play in full and scenes transition automatically. If the event moves on to live scenes, it returns to manual mode and an operator must end it. Check Vimeo’s scheduled prerecorded-event instructions for current interface labels and eligibility.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What OBS does—and what it does not do
OBS is an external encoder in this comparison. It sends a live encoded feed to a configured destination; it does not invoke Vimeo’s web-studio-only scheduled prerecorded feature. Vimeo’s OBS guide describes choosing a custom service, entering an RTMP URL and stream key, applying the bandwidth-test configuration, and starting the stream. That specific guide is for Vimeo OTT, whose live streaming it says is available only to Growth and Enterprise sellers; do not assume that plan statement applies to every Vimeo.com live product. See Vimeo’s OBS connection guide.
If the goal is simply to play a video at a future event time, using OBS adds an encoder workflow without giving you Vimeo’s native scheduled prerecorded automation. If you need an encoder-driven, composed feed, OBS is relevant—but plan for an operator to set up and start it as required.

Sending the Vimeo event to YouTube
Vimeo documents two ways to simulcast an event to YouTube: a direct YouTube integration or an RTMP destination configured with the URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The guide lists up to 10 destinations for direct integration and up to 20 simultaneous destinations for RTMP. These are Vimeo’s documented destination limits, not guarantees of stream quality. Vimeo’s guide specifies Advanced or Premium, or Enterprise with Events, and says the YouTube account must be verified. Check the account for live-stream restrictions before setup. See Vimeo’s YouTube simulcast guide.
When using RTMP for a scheduled YouTube stream, a stream arriving from Vimeo may not itself put the YouTube event live: Vimeo warns that you may need to select Go Live manually in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat scheduling the YouTube event, sending the feed, and making the event live as separate controls. Confirm the preview and the event’s status rather than assuming the scheduled time completes every step.

Prepare and test the YouTube event
- Confirm live eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s live-stream access before building the event. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains eligibility and scheduling.
- Schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Scheduling helps viewers find the event in advance and receive reminders; it does not configure the encoder or guarantee that a destination is already live.
- Set the encoder destination separately. For an encoder workflow, use the stream URL and key supplied in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, supported encoder settings, and testing upload capacity. Keep the stream key private.
- Allow setup time. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead, starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time, and keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. These are preparation recommendations, not performance guarantees. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the configuration.
- Test and monitor. Where appropriate, run a private or unlisted test with representative audio and motion. Check the incoming preview, audio, video, and the destination’s live status, then monitor the event. A test helps expose setup problems; it cannot establish that every future stream will behave identically.
Common problems and what to check
- The scheduled prerecorded event does not start: Confirm you used Vimeo’s web production tool and the prerecorded-event mode, not an external encoder. Check plan access, event type, the one-minute minimum lead time, and whether concurrent-stream limits could block the start.
- The video starts but captions are absent: Vimeo says uploaded subtitles or captions are not displayed during playback in its native video-to-live flow. Account for this before choosing that route.
- The Vimeo feed reaches YouTube but viewers cannot watch: Open YouTube Live Control Room and check whether the scheduled destination needs a manual Go Live action. Also verify the channel’s live access and that the correct URL and stream key were entered.
- OBS is not sending a signal: Recheck the selected service, destination URL, stream key, and encoder status. A Vimeo OBS guide for OTT describes this connection pattern, but its product-specific eligibility should not be generalized to other Vimeo offerings.
- The event plays past the expected end: Vimeo’s automatic mode plays selected videos in full; it does not cut them short at the scheduled end. Check the selected segments and plan how the event should finish.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating a home encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera broadcasting. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
