PRISM documents Android broadcasts continuing when the app is in the background while you use another app, but it does not say that this keeps working when you lock the phone or turn off its display. PRISM says iOS apps do not support background live broadcasting. Those are distinct behaviors: backgrounding the app is not the same as switching off the screen.
What PRISM officially supports
Android: using other apps while live
PRISM Live Studio’s background-broadcasting guide says the app can continue broadcasting while running in the background. It instructs Android users to enable the system setting “Allow display over other apps.” The examples include opening another app or answering a call. This is guidance for app backgrounding, not confirmation that a locked phone or powered-off display will keep streaming.
iPhone and iPad: background live broadcasting
PRISM says iOS apps do not support background live broadcasting because of platform OS policies. Its Screencast guide describes screen-casting setup using iOS ReplayKit, but does not describe an exception for locking the device or turning off the display.
Backgrounding, screen-off, and PRISM’s screen saver are different
- Backgrounding: PRISM remains active while you switch to another app. On Android, PRISM documents this with “Allow display over other apps.”
- Screen off or locked: the physical display is off or the phone is locked. PRISM’s cited guidance does not confirm that a live broadcast continues in this state.
- In-app screen saver or privacy screen: PRISM describes a way to hide private content during screen sharing, and Android release notes mention a “Screen Saver” effect. Neither establishes that the device display can be turned off while broadcasting.
Do not treat the Android overlay permission or an in-app privacy feature as a workaround for a locked or screen-off phone.

What to do if you need the phone display off
If screen-off streaming is essential, test the exact phone, operating-system version, PRISM release, and broadcast mode before depending on it. The available PRISM guidance does not verify this behavior across camera broadcasts or screen-casting modes. A Reddit user reported that their PRISM stream ended when they turned off the display, but that is one person’s experience, not a compatibility test for all devices.
If you only need to check another app during an Android broadcast, enable “Allow display over other apps” in Android’s settings and test that documented background use case. Do not assume the same setup will let you lock the device or switch off its display.
