SDI means Serial Digital Interface: a family of professional video standards used to carry digital video—and, when supported, embedded audio—between cameras and production equipment. For live streaming, SDI is usually the connection from a camera or switcher to an encoder. The encoder compresses the signal and sends it over a network using a protocol such as RTMP or SRT. SDI is a production connection, not an internet streaming protocol.
What SDI does in a live-streaming setup
SDI commonly connects cameras, switchers, recorders and monitors over coaxial cable with BNC connectors. Depending on the standard and equipment, the signal can also carry embedded audio and ancillary data. Its professional use is associated with low-latency baseband video links, but that does not guarantee a particular end-to-end delay: the whole chain, including conversion, encoding, network transport and playback, matters. Avonic’s SDI overview describes the interface’s use in broadcast, live events and conferencing.
A typical stream path is:
Camera or switcher → SDI coax cable → compatible encoder → Ethernet/network → streaming destination
The camera and encoder must agree on the signal standard and supported video format. The encoder then compresses the incoming video and handles network delivery. For example, Blackmagic Design lists its Streaming Encoder 4K as supporting multiple SDI standards and direct Ethernet livestreaming using RTMP with H.264 or SRT with H.264/H.265. Those are specifications for that model, not a promise about other encoders; check the exact device’s manufacturer specifications.

SDI generations and compatibility
HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI and 12G-SDI indicate different link generations and rates. They are useful clues, but the label alone does not establish that two devices can exchange a particular signal. SMPTE’s standards ecosystem includes 292M (HD-SDI), 424M (3G-SDI), 2081 (6G-SDI) and 2082 (12G-SDI); the standards address electrical interfaces as well as mapping image formats and ancillary data. The SMPTE ST 2082 overview explains single-link 12G-SDI mapping and carriage of multiple lower-rate signals.

A device that accepts an SDI cable is not necessarily an encoder: it may only convert, monitor or record the signal. Confirm that the device performs the job you need.
Choosing and installing SDI cabling
SDI links commonly use coaxial cable terminated with BNC connectors. Cable reach is conditional on signal rate, cable construction, connectors, installation and equipment; there is no universal distance that applies to every SDI setup. Avonic’s overview says coaxial runs can reach up to 300 m, while separately cautioning that HD bit rates are limited to 100 m. Treat those figures as guidance from that overview, not a standards-wide guarantee or a substitute for the cable and equipment specifications.

For a real installation, follow the cable manufacturer’s attenuation guidance for the signal rate and check the input limits of the connected equipment. Include connectors, patch panels and any equalizers or repeaters in the signal path. For longer or more demanding runs, fiber or conversion equipment may be suitable, depending on the system design.
Signal integrity depends on the components along the link, not just the cable’s label. In a Texas Instruments video dated 17 August 2023, the company explains: “Cable drivers help meet TX requirements for rise/fall time, overshoot/undershoot, jitter, and amplitude. Equalizers help meet RX return loss requirements, while retimers help with jitter and overall signal integrity.” These components address different parts of transmitting and receiving a signal; follow the equipment manufacturer’s guidance when selecting them. SDI versus SMPTE ST 2110
SDI and SMPTE ST 2110 represent different facility architectures, not simply two cable types. SDI commonly provides a point-to-point connection over coax and BNC. ST 2110 carries professional media over a managed IP network as separate, synchronized essence streams, including uncompressed active video, PCM digital audio and ancillary data. SMPTE designed the suite to replace long-lived SDI infrastructure in broadcast and production facilities; it remains under active development. See SMPTE’s ST 2110 overview and its public standards documents.
| Decision point | SDI | SMPTE ST 2110 |
|---|---|---|
| Connection model | Typically a direct equipment-to-equipment coax link. | Media travels through a managed IP network as separate essence streams. |
| Routing and infrastructure | Connections follow the physical cabling and compatible equipment. | Network routing offers flexibility but requires a managed network designed for professional media. |
| Timing and synchronization | Depends on the connected SDI equipment and signal design. | Synchronization is part of the IP media system design. |
| Practical choice | Consider the existing SDI equipment, cable plant, required formats and link distances. | Consider network engineering, synchronization, routing needs and the facility’s IP equipment ecosystem. |
Neither is universally better for every streaming setup. The right choice depends on the existing facility, equipment interoperability, physical plant, routing needs, timing design and cost or complexity of changing infrastructure.

How to choose SDI equipment for streaming
Compare equipment by the signal it must carry and the job it must perform, rather than by a headline label alone.
- Camera or switcher: Confirm the SDI output standard, format and frame rate you intend to use.
- Cable: Match the coax and BNC connectors to the signal rate and actual run, following manufacturer guidance.
- Encoder: Check SDI input compatibility, supported formats, and whether it can send the required RTMP or SRT stream with a compatible codec.
- Audio and data: Verify embedded-audio and ancillary-data support through every device that must preserve them.
- Long or complex runs: Check whether the system needs equalizers, repeaters, retimers, fiber or conversion equipment.
Blackmagic Design’s Streaming Encoder 4K is one manufacturer-documented example of an SDI device that also supports direct Ethernet streaming. Its capabilities should not be generalized to other models; consult the product’s technical specifications and compare them with the camera output and destination requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos played continuously, SDI is not the necessary tool: it serves a camera or production signal path, while StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing needs to stay powered on at home; video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
