No—not if the video is being streamed by an encoder running on that PC. When the computer sleeps, its encoder can no longer send the video to YouTube, so the stream source stops. To keep a prerecorded ambience stream running with your PC off, move the stream to a cloud service or to another device that can access the video independently.
Why sleep stops a PC-originated stream
A YouTube encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key to connect streaming software or hardware to YouTube. The encoder sends the feed; YouTube is not independently pulling a video file from your sleeping PC. If that PC sleeps, its software encoder and local video source stop operating, and the computer-originated feed cannot continue. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe starting and stopping the encoder as part of the workflow.
That means changing the PC’s sleep timer can keep a local setup running only by keeping the computer awake. It does not make an encoder continue working while its host is asleep.

2. Keep the PC awake
If your existing loop and encoder run on your PC, leave it awake and connected to the internet. This is the direct do-it-yourself approach, but the PC, source file, encoder and network all need to remain available. YouTube recommends leaving upload bandwidth headroom and testing and monitoring stream health; a continuous stream should not be treated as guaranteed uninterrupted.
3. Use a standalone hardware encoder with an independent source
YouTube supports hardware encoders, but a hardware encoder is another powered device—not a setting that lets a sleeping PC keep streaming. The video source must be available to the encoder independently of that computer. YouTube’s documentation does not establish that a particular hardware encoder can continue reading a file from a sleeping PC.

Check YouTube channel eligibility
YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; it also says users must be at least 16. Platform rules can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements before setup.

Protect and configure the encoder connection
For an encoder workflow, YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or share it with someone who should not control the stream. Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then test the actual setup rather than assuming the network can sustain it.
Leave upload headroom and test
YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the total outgoing stream bitrate by 20%. Other devices and users on a shared connection can consume capacity, and network disruptions can break the feed. Before relying on a long-running stream, test it, check the preview before going live, and monitor stream health and audio/video quality. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Keep live delivery separate from DVR and archives
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind and resume a live stream; it does not keep the encoder sending video. YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Its encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. These behaviors concern viewer controls and recordings, not whether a sleeping PC can keep a live feed going. Common problems and what to check
- The stream stops when the PC sleeps: the local encoder or source is no longer operating. Keep the PC awake, or move the prerecorded stream to a cloud service or a device with an independent source.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: check whether upload bandwidth can sustain the total bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, whether other devices are using the connection, and whether the encoder reports a healthy feed. Test the setup before leaving it unattended.
- The video source disappears when the PC is off: a separate encoder cannot read a file that is only available on that sleeping computer. Put the source somewhere the encoder can access independently.
- The stream is live but viewers cannot rewind or find an archive: check DVR and archive expectations separately. Streams longer than 12 hours may have limited DVR, and the automatic archive behavior documented by YouTube applies to streams under 12 hours.
- You cannot start a live stream: check channel verification, any live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days, and the age requirement in YouTube’s current guidance.
