BoxCast vs. OBS for a Continuous YouTube Stream: What Each Can—and Can’t—Do

OBS is streaming software; BoxCast adds a scheduled distribution workflow. Its events end at the scheduled time, so verify duration and recurrence before relying on it for continuous YouTube streaming.

OBS and BoxCast do different jobs. OBS is production and streaming software; BoxCast is a streaming platform that can take OBS as an input, schedule broadcasts, and simulcast them to a linked YouTube account. For a continuous YouTube stream, the key issue is that BoxCast broadcasts end at their scheduled end time. BoxCast documentation describes Premium events lasting up to 24 hours, but that does not establish support for one indefinitely running 24/7 event.

OBS vs. BoxCast: the practical difference

Question OBS direct to YouTube OBS through BoxCast
What is it? Production and streaming software. A streaming platform that can accept an OBS feed and distribute a scheduled broadcast, including to YouTube.
Can OBS be part of the BoxCast workflow? OBS is the streaming software in this route. Yes. BoxCast documents OBS input over RTMP or SRT, and a separate workflow that sends OBS’s program output to a BoxCast encoder.
How does YouTube delivery work? A direct OBS-to-YouTube route is a natural use for OBS, but the exact current setup procedure is not established by the BoxCast documentation discussed here. Link a YouTube account in BoxCast integrations, then select YouTube as a destination when scheduling a BoxCast broadcast.
What happens at the end of a scheduled event? Not established here for a continuous stream. The BoxCast broadcast ends at its scheduled time, even if the encoder continues sending.
What monitoring is described? BoxCast characterizes OBS troubleshooting as more limited than its encoder diagnostics; that is the vendor’s comparison, not an independent test. BoxCast describes encoder diagnostics and access to its support process. These are not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

So this is not a like-for-like contest between two encoders. OBS can be used on its own or as part of a BoxCast setup; BoxCast adds a scheduled distribution workflow and platform services. Official BoxCast instructions demonstrate that the products can be combined, not that one route has been independently tested as more reliable than the other.

Can BoxCast run a 24/7 YouTube stream?

Do not assume that a scheduled BoxCast broadcast will stay live indefinitely. BoxCast’s “Get Started with BoxCast” article says a broadcast automatically ends at its scheduled time and that video sent after that point will not be broadcast to viewers or recorded. BoxCast’s Premium Plan Features support article describes events lasting up to 24 hours. That is a stated event limit, not evidence that an uninterrupted event longer than 24 hours—or a recurring 24/7 YouTube stream—is supported.

Before choosing BoxCast for a continuous channel, confirm the exact event-duration limit, whether events can be scheduled to recur in the way you need, what happens during a connection interruption, and which plan includes the required features. Check the current plan details directly: BoxCast’s pricing and feature availability can change, and no current plan price is established here.

Choose a route based on the job you need done

Use OBS directly when you want to produce and send a stream

OBS is the relevant tool when your priority is creating a program on a computer and streaming it. A direct route avoids adding BoxCast’s scheduled-broadcast layer, but the current OBS-to-YouTube configuration and the applicable YouTube requirements for your exact continuous-stream setup are not established by the BoxCast sources covered here. Consult current OBS and YouTube instructions before committing to a long-running broadcast; do not treat the absence of a BoxCast event limit as proof that a particular YouTube configuration will run indefinitely.

Use OBS with BoxCast when you need its platform workflow

BoxCast documents several ways to combine its service with OBS: send OBS to BoxCast using RTMP or SRT, or send OBS’s program feed to a BoxCast encoder. BoxCast also documents selecting YouTube as a destination for a scheduled simulcast. This may suit a workflow that needs BoxCast’s scheduling or diagnostics, but the scheduled end time still matters for a continuous stream.

RTMP: send OBS to a BoxCast source

  1. In BoxCast, open Sources and copy the stream key and the server URL provided for the source.
  2. In OBS, select BoxCast as the service and enter the supplied server URL and stream key.
  3. Schedule the BoxCast broadcast for the intended start time. BoxCast recommends starting OBS five to ten minutes before the scheduled start so the event can begin on time.
  4. Confirm the BoxCast event is live and that its scheduled end time covers the period you actually need. Do not expect the broadcast to continue for viewers after its scheduled end.

SRT: send OBS to a BoxCast source

  1. In BoxCast, obtain the SRT server value for the source.
  2. In OBS, use the custom service field and enter that SRT server value.
  3. Leave the stream key blank, as BoxCast’s SRT instructions specify.
  4. Schedule the BoxCast broadcast and verify its start and end times before relying on it.

Send OBS output to a BoxCast encoder

  1. Connect the computer to the BoxCast encoder using a compatible display or HDMI connection. The specific cable, adapter, or capture device depends on the computer’s ports and encoder inputs; a capture card is not universally required.
  2. Use OBS Projector Mode to send the program feed to the encoder, as BoxCast recommends.
  3. Check the picture and audio at the encoder, then confirm the scheduled BoxCast event and its YouTube destination.

BoxCast says hardware encoding relieves the computer of encoding work and gives it access to encoder diagnostics and its described network protocol. Treat those as BoxCast’s descriptions of its workflow, not as independent performance findings or a reliability guarantee.

Link YouTube and test before the scheduled broadcast

  1. In the BoxCast dashboard, link the YouTube account through integrations.
  2. When scheduling the BoxCast broadcast, select YouTube as a destination.
  3. For a test, BoxCast recommends using private or unlisted privacy settings.
  4. Allow time for activation: BoxCast’s integration guide says YouTube live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate after it is enabled. Confirm the feature is active before the event rather than troubleshooting at airtime.

YouTube’s current rules for indefinite 24/7 operation, archive behavior, content type, and the exact configuration are not established by these BoxCast materials. Check YouTube’s current official guidance for your channel and stream before relying on a particular duration or content arrangement. Do not assume that a scheduled BoxCast simulcast, an unlisted test, or a long-running feed by itself establishes policy compliance.

Settings and equipment cautions

  • Audio bitrate: BoxCast’s OBS support guide warns against audio bitrates below 64 kbps, saying they can result in HE-AAC and no audio on the BoxCast stream. This is a BoxCast-specific instruction; recheck the current guide and your audio path if sound is missing.
  • Video settings: The available BoxCast material here does not establish a recommended resolution, video bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe interval for this exact setup. Use current guidance from the services involved and verify the resulting stream, rather than treating an unverified preset as a universal requirement.
  • Connection hardware: A computer-to-encoder HDMI connection may require a compatible adapter or capture device, depending on the equipment. Check the computer’s output, encoder’s input, operating-system compatibility, and desired resolution and frame rate before buying anything.
  • Computer and network: In the OBS-to-BoxCast-source routes, OBS is still sending a feed from the computer. The encoder workflow changes where encoding work is done, according to BoxCast, but the sources do not establish that every computer or network will sustain a particular continuous stream.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely point to check Action
The BoxCast event does not start when expected. The OBS feed may not be running before the scheduled event begins, or the event may not be scheduled correctly. Check the event time and source configuration. For RTMP, BoxCast recommends starting OBS five to ten minutes ahead of the scheduled start.
The stream stops even though OBS or the encoder is still sending. The BoxCast event may have reached its scheduled end time. Check the scheduled duration. BoxCast says the event ends at that time and continued encoder output will not be broadcast or recorded.
There is no audio on a BoxCast stream. Audio bitrate below 64 kbps is one BoxCast-identified risk; other audio-path causes are not established by the cited instructions. Check the OBS audio bitrate against BoxCast’s current guidance, then verify the source audio and encoder input.
YouTube is unavailable as a destination or will not go live. YouTube live streaming may not yet be activated for the account. Check the account’s live-stream status and allow for the activation period BoxCast describes, which may be up to 24 hours after enabling. Test with private or unlisted settings as BoxCast recommends.
The picture does not reach the BoxCast encoder. The physical computer-to-encoder connection or Projector Mode routing may not match the equipment. Verify the selected output, ports, adapter or capture hardware, and encoder input. Requirements vary by rig; do not assume one capture-card model or connection fits all setups.
A long-running setup appears reliable in a short test but fails later. A short test does not establish support for indefinite operation, recovery behavior, or YouTube policy compliance. Verify duration, recurrence, interruption recovery, plan requirements, and current YouTube guidance before depending on the arrangement.

Or let it run in the cloud
