Streamlabs does not guarantee that a YouTube stream will keep running if you switch apps or lock your phone. Its guidance specifically warns that screen capture can leave the app effectively suspended in the background, and that iOS may kill the app during screen broadcasting. That is a reason to be cautious—not proof that every stream stops. For an important broadcast, keep Streamlabs open and test your own phone and streaming mode before relying on background operation.
What happens when you leave Streamlabs open in the background?
Streamlabs Mobile supports YouTube broadcasts using the camera, screen capture, or both. Its setup guide explains how to connect YouTube and start a broadcast in the app, but does not promise that the broadcast continues after you background Streamlabs or lock the phone. Streamlabs’ YouTube-from-phone guide was published April 16, 2021, and last updated August 12, 2026.
The clearest warning applies to screen capture. The Streamlabs Mobile Streaming FAQ says: “When screen capturing, the app is in the background and effectively suspended so it can’t render things inside of another app.” It also says iOS disables widgets during screen broadcasting to reduce the risk of the system killing the app.
Those statements establish a reliability concern, especially for screen broadcasts on iOS. They do not explicitly say that YouTube stops receiving every broadcast, nor do they establish what happens in every camera-only setup or on every Android device. The available documentation does not provide a complete behavior chart by phone, operating-system version, app version, and capture mode.

Can you switch apps or lock your phone while streaming?
There is no documented guarantee that either action is safe. Switching apps may matter differently from locking the screen, and camera capture may behave differently from screen capture. The documented suspension warning is about screen capture; do not assume it describes every camera broadcast, but do not treat the lack of a camera-specific warning as a promise that background streaming works.
- Screen capture: Streamlabs says the app is effectively suspended in the background while capturing the screen. On iOS, it warns that the system may kill the app during screen broadcasting.
- Camera capture: Streamlabs supports it, but the cited guidance does not establish whether a live broadcast continues after you leave the app or lock the phone.
- iOS and Android: The documentation does not establish a universal rule that background streaming works or fails on either platform.
How to check your exact setup safely
- Note your setup: record your phone model, operating-system version, Streamlabs app version, and whether you will use camera, screen, or combined capture.
- Run a low-stakes test: start a short broadcast with the same capture mode and settings you plan to use. Use a private or otherwise low-stakes test setup where available; verify YouTube’s live status and playback from another device.
- Test one action at a time: first switch to another app, then—if needed—test locking the screen in a separate run. Check whether the broadcast remains live and whether video and audio continue, rather than relying only on the app’s preview.
- Repeat after meaningful changes: re-test if you update the app or operating system, change capture mode, or move to a different phone. A result on one configuration does not establish behavior on another.
- Keep Streamlabs foregrounded for a consequential stream: until your own tests show otherwise, avoid switching apps or locking the phone when continuity matters.
Prepare the phone, but do not mistake preparation for a background fix
Streamlabs recommends fully charging the phone, keeping a charger nearby, and closing open apps to reduce lag or crashes. Its mobile streaming guide, published January 17, 2024 and last updated August 12, 2026, presents these as preparation advice. A compatible USB-C power bank or portable phone charger can help extend a session when your phone supports USB-C, but external power does not prevent operating-system suspension or guarantee that the app will stay alive.
