Disconnecting Remote Desktop does not necessarily close OBS, but it can change or remove the virtual display and audio devices OBS was using. On a Windows VPS, that can leave OBS open while its screen capture freezes, its desktop audio goes silent, or both. First identify whether OBS itself stopped or a source lost its device; then choose a remote-access and streaming setup that preserves the source you need.
What disconnecting from Remote Desktop can change
Disconnecting from an RDP session is different from signing out: the application may remain open even though the session’s devices change. OBS community forum discussions describe RDP disconnections that leave OBS running but interrupt screen or window capture, desktop audio, or both. These reports are community guidance, not an official, universal Windows guarantee. The result depends on the host and its device configuration.
A VPS may rely on virtual devices provided for the active RDP session rather than a persistent GPU, display, or audio path. When that session ends, OBS can lose the input it was capturing. A physical Windows computer with its own persistent display/GPU and audio path is a different case from a hosted VM that lacks those capabilities.
Diagnose what actually stopped
- Before disconnecting, note OBS’s state. Check that OBS is open, its preview is updating, and the stream or recording is active. This gives you a baseline for comparison.
- Disconnect, then reconnect and inspect OBS. Check whether OBS is still open and whether the preview continues to update. An open application does not prove that its capture source is still receiving data.
- Check video and audio separately. Inspect the properties of the affected capture source and the OBS audio mixer. Community reports describe video capture freezing and desktop audio disappearing as separate symptoms; do not assume one implies the other.
- Identify the host and its devices. Establish whether this is a physical machine or a virtual VPS. Ask the hosting provider whether a persistent GPU/display and audio device are available when no RDP session is active.
- Classify any stream failure before changing settings. If OBS stays connected to the ingest server but the picture freezes or audio vanishes, investigate capture and device continuity. If OBS reports dropped frames or loses its stream connection, investigate the network path instead.
Choose a fix that matches the source
If you are capturing a live desktop on a physical machine
OBS forum contributors recommend using a remote-control method that mirrors the existing console desktop rather than creating an RDP session with its own virtual display. VNC is one example cited in those discussions. Test the exact capture and audio sources after disconnecting the remote viewer: mirroring may help preserve an existing machine session, but it is not a guarantee for every configuration.

If you are capturing a live desktop on a VPS
Ask the VPS provider what GPU, display, and audio devices the VM exposes outside an active RDP session. A VNC-style remote-control method cannot supply hardware that the VM does not have. The reviewed forum guidance does not establish a dependable universal fix for a VPS whose capture or audio device disappears when RDP disconnects. Do not assume that adding a dummy display or audio device will solve the session transition without checking compatibility with the host and OBS sources.
If you are streaming a prerecorded video or playlist
An unattended playlist is a different job from capturing an interactive desktop. An OBS moderator suggested investigating an RTMP “video jukebox” server, mentioning Red5 as an example; that is a high-level direction to evaluate, not a current endorsement or a tested migration recipe. Choose a workflow intended for automated playback rather than assuming OBS is a headless 24/7 service.

Separate device problems from network problems
The OBS Project’s official Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. It recommends checking the ingest choice, bitrate, network settings, and interfering software. Those checks apply when the stream path is unstable; they do not restore a display or audio device removed at RDP disconnect.
- Preview freezes or a capture source stops updating: check whether the capture device remains available after disconnecting RDP.
- Audio meter goes silent: check the desktop-audio source and whether its device remains available outside the remote session.
- Dropped frames or stream disconnection: follow OBS’s network troubleshooting guidance and distinguish an ingest/network issue from a local capture issue.
