Treat that as a conservative estimate—not a guaranteed minimum or a published VPS benchmark. OBS recommends a quad-core CPU for 1080p streaming and 8 GB RAM, but says actual CPU demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Test the exact setup you plan to leave running.
What RAM and CPU should you start with?
For one straightforward 1080p30 stream encoded in OBS, use 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM as an initial configuration to evaluate. This estimate applies OBS Project’s general Windows guidance to a VPS; OBS does not specify a universal VPS size. Its Windows download page lists 4 GB RAM as minimum and 8 GB as recommended, and a dual-core CPU as minimum with a quad-core recommendation for 1080p streaming. Those figures describe OBS system guidance, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain an always-on stream. OBS Studio Download for Windows
OBS’s system requirements page says CPU requirements vary considerably with the chosen encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. A low-complexity prerecorded loop is not equivalent to a scene with multiple sources, animated overlays, scaling, filters, or several simultaneous streams. The 4-vCPU/8-GB starting point is more likely to be insufficient as those demands increase. OBS Studio System Requirements
When the workload is lighter or heavier
- Relaying an already encoded feed: If the VPS only relays the encoded stream without decoding and re-encoding it, compute demand may be lower. That is a technical inference, not a measured VPS specification.
- Encoding in OBS: If OBS decodes a video file and creates a new outgoing encode, the VPS must handle that encoding workload.
- More demanding scenes: Higher resolution or frame rate, software encoding, filters, scaling, overlays, and multiple simultaneous streams can increase resource needs. Test the actual scene rather than assuming the simple-loop estimate covers it.
- Windows and other software: Although 4 GB is OBS’s listed RAM minimum, 8 GB is its recommendation. Allow memory for Windows and other running software instead of treating the minimum as an always-on target.
Do not confuse YouTube bitrate with VPS sizing
Bitrate determines how much data the stream sends and what upload capacity it needs; it does not tell you how many CPU cores or how much RAM OBS requires. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists these H.264 bitrate recommendations: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

The same YouTube page also lists recommended rates of 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube ingest settings, not CPU or RAM requirements. YouTube supports live ingest using RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, at frame rates up to 60 fps; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Check YouTube’s current table when configuring a stream because platform guidance can change.
A faster CPU will not fix an unstable or inadequate upload path. Choose a bitrate that the VPS’s outbound connection can sustain, test in advance, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. For an unattended loop, make the test representative: use the planned video, overlays, resolution, frame rate, and encoder, and let it run long enough to observe the real workload.

Check Windows, graphics, and encoder support
CPU and RAM figures alone do not establish that OBS will work as intended on a Windows VPS. OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU in its system requirements. A VPS listing that specifies only virtual CPU and memory does not prove those graphics requirements are met. Confirm the provider’s virtual graphics/display and driver support, then test OBS on the actual instance. OBS Studio System Requirements
Hardware encoding can reduce the encoding work handled by the CPU, but only if the specific VPS exposes a compatible graphics device, driver, and encoder to OBS. Do not assume that a plan advertising a GPU gives OBS usable hardware-encoder access. OBS Studio Hardware Encoding

What to compare when choosing a VPS
- Sustained CPU allocation and any policy on contention, not just the advertised vCPU count.
- Available RAM and the Windows image and licensing included with the plan.
- DirectX/graphics compatibility and the provider’s driver support.
- Whether OBS can access a hardware encoder, if your workflow depends on one.
- Outbound upload capacity and any relevant limits.
- Whether the provider supports long-running sessions for an always-on workload.
These are purchasing checks, not claims that any particular provider or plan meets them. No single CPU/RAM configuration can compensate for missing graphics support or an unreliable upload path.
Test before leaving the loop unattended
- Build the production scene. Use the same source video, overlays, filters, scaling, and number of scenes or sources you intend to run continuously.
- Set the intended output. Choose the target resolution, frame rate, encoder, and YouTube bitrate. Use YouTube’s current ingest guidance for the selected format.
- Run OBS on the actual VPS. Verify it starts correctly and can use the intended encoder. If relying on hardware encoding, confirm it is actually available to OBS rather than inferred from a provider’s GPU label.
- Test representative content and audio. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. For a loop, test the actual video and any overlays.
- Monitor stream health and resource use. Watch YouTube’s stream health and the VPS during the test. If the stream drops frames or becomes unstable, investigate upload capacity, encoder behavior, and resource pressure before relying on it unattended.
Common sizing and setup problems
- OBS opens, but the stream cannot be sustained: Meeting minimum system requirements does not guarantee a workload will work. Test the production scene; reduce scene complexity or output demands, or evaluate a VPS with more suitable sustained resources.
- CPU is heavily loaded during encoding: Encoder choice and output settings affect CPU demand. Test a suitable encoder and settings; use hardware encoding only after verifying the VPS exposes compatible hardware and drivers.
- Stream health is poor despite more vCPU: CPU upgrades do not correct an inadequate or unstable upload path. Check outbound capacity and use a bitrate the connection can maintain.
- OBS cannot use the expected GPU encoder: A provider’s GPU description is not proof of compatible access. Confirm virtual graphics and driver support with the provider and test the instance.
- The setup works only with a simple test scene: Filters, scaling, animated elements, overlays, and multiple sources can change the load. Test with the final scene before leaving it running.
