To send a GStreamer pipeline to YouTube Live, encode its audio and video, mux them into FLV, and send the result to YouTube’s ingest URL with a stream key. GStreamer provides two documented sink options—rtmpsink and rtmp2sink—but the right one depends on which plugins and connection properties your installation supports. YouTube recommends RTMPS when your encoder and endpoint support it.

How the GStreamer-to-YouTube path works

The basic chain is source → convert or scale if needed → encode audio and video → mux into FLV → RTMP sink. The sink sends the muxed stream to a server; it does not capture or encode your sources for you. GStreamer’s official sink examples show flvmux before either sink. See the GStreamer rtmpsink documentation and GStreamer rtmp2sink documentation.

A complete pipeline depends on your source, operating system, installed plugins, and encoder. The official examples illustrate the structure, but their test sources and example server destinations are not ready-made YouTube commands.

gst-inspect-1.0 rtmpsink
gst-inspect-1.0 rtmp2sink

If an element is missing, its plugin is not available to that installation. The rtmpsink element is documented in GStreamer’s RTMP Bad Plug-ins package. The rtmp2sink documentation lists properties and notes that some are version-dependent—for example, extra connection arguments are marked as available since 1.26 and stop commands since 1.20. Use the output of gst-inspect-1.0 and documentation matching your installed version before adding properties.

What the official examples establish

GStreamer documents this illustrative rtmpsink pipeline:

gst-launch-1.0 -v videotestsrc ! ffenc_flv ! flvmux ! rtmpsink location='rtmp://localhost/path/to/stream live=1'

This uses a test source and a localhost placeholder; it is not a YouTube-ready command, and the encoder may not be installed or suitable for your system.

RTMP or RTMPS

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. The cited GStreamer sink pages describe RTMP delivery; they do not establish that every build or endpoint combination supports the RTMPS connection you want. Check your installed sink and the endpoint details in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not assume support from the sink’s name alone. YouTube’s current guidance is on its encoder settings page.

Get YouTube’s stream URL and key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream or scheduled event.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream’s settings. Use the URL as the sink destination and provide the key in the format required by the selected sink and endpoint.
  3. Keep the key private. Treat it like a credential: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, logs, or commands shared with others. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings.
  4. Start sending from GStreamer and check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room. For a scheduled event, select “Go live” when that workflow requires it.

YouTube’s setup guidance describes entering the stream URL and key in an encoder; exact field names and connection formats vary across encoders. Check the YouTube stream settings guidance alongside the properties documented for your sink.

Set encoding to match YouTube’s guidance

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR. For audio, its guidance lists 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1; 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS.

Bitrate figures in YouTube’s current table

The figures below are from YouTube’s encoder settings page checked in 2026. They are guidance for video ingestion, not a guarantee that your upload connection can sustain a chosen rate. YouTube advises selecting a quality your connection can reliably deliver and testing before the event.

Video mode Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

YouTube lists 128 Kbps as the stereo audio bitrate in the same guidance. Leave headroom for audio and network variation rather than planning for the entire available upload rate to be consumed by video.

Keyframes

YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Match the interval to the encoder’s settings and the actual frame rate. GStreamer’s keyframe design documentation describes GstForceKeyUnit events that can request an encoder to schedule a keyframe, but this does not mean every encoder exposes the same property or responds identically. Consult the selected encoder’s documentation or its gst-inspect-1.0 output instead of guessing a property name. See GStreamer’s keyframe design documentation.

Build the pipeline for your sources

For actual content, replace the test source with your capture or media source and add the necessary conversion, scaling, and encoding elements. A pipeline with audio needs a separate audio path that encodes to a format compatible with the muxer and YouTube settings; both paths must reach the muxer before the RTMP sink. Source-specific caps, device names, encoder choices, and element properties are not universal, so verify each element locally rather than copying a command intended for another operating system or build.

  • Confirm the source produces the expected audio or video caps; add conversion or scaling only where needed.
  • Choose an encoder and configure codec, bitrate mode, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval in the syntax supported by that encoder.
  • Connect encoded streams to flvmux, then connect the muxer to the selected sink.
  • Use the YouTube URL and key for the stream selected in Live Control Room, with the connection syntax expected by that sink.

Do not publish a command containing a real stream key. If you use a shell command or script, protect the key from command history, logs, and access by other users on the machine.

Test before the event

  1. Run the pipeline with GStreamer’s verbose output or suitable application logging, and confirm that the expected elements load and negotiate caps.
  2. Check the GStreamer bus or process output for errors such as missing plugins, incompatible caps, encoder failures, or a sink connection problem.
  3. Watch YouTube Live Control Room for an incoming preview and stream-health status. Confirm both picture and sound using representative motion and audio.
  4. Compare the actual bitrate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s guidance; test at the quality you intend to use during the event.
  5. For a scheduled event, complete the Live Control Room steps, including “Go live” where required.

GStreamer applications using live sources may encounter GST_STATE_CHANGE_NO_PREROLL; it is a live-source state behavior, not by itself proof of a failed YouTube connection. The GStreamer streaming tutorial also covers application-level handling of buffering messages and clock loss, which can matter when you manage the pipeline in an application.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely checks
“No such element” or pipeline parsing fails Run gst-inspect-1.0 for the missing element. Install or select an available plugin, then check whether its properties match your GStreamer version.
Pipeline starts but YouTube shows no incoming stream Verify the selected stream’s URL and key, the sink’s location/authentication syntax, and whether the chosen endpoint supports the transport configured in the pipeline.
Negotiation or caps errors Inspect source and encoder caps; add the necessary conversion or scaling; ensure audio and video encoders feed the muxer in supported formats.
Preview appears but video or audio is missing Check that both intended branches reach the muxer, that the audio codec and sample rate meet the chosen YouTube settings, and that the source itself is producing data.
Stream health reports instability Check sustained upload capacity, configured CBR bitrate, and whether the encoder is producing keyframes within YouTube’s interval. Retest at a lower quality if the connection cannot reliably sustain the target.
Scheduled event has a preview but is not public Check the Live Control Room workflow; some scheduled-event flows require selecting “Go live” after the preview arrives.
