For a stable H.264 loop stream, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your resolution and frame rate, configure CBR, and set GStreamer’s x264enc key-int-max to about two seconds of frames: 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. For a non-interactive 24/7 loop, YouTube’s normal latency mode is usually the practical choice. Encoder latency and viewer latency are separate settings, so tune them independently.
Recommended settings at a glance
- Video: H.264, progressive scan, square pixels, at the resolution and frame rate your source can sustain.
- Rate control: CBR, with the video bitrate selected from YouTube’s live H.264 table below.
- Keyframes: target one every two seconds; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: for stereo RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.
- Viewer latency: normal for a loop that does not need real-time interaction.
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Confirm your installed GStreamer sink supports it.
These are documentation-based settings, not results from a tested pipeline. GStreamer properties and plugin support vary by installed version and build.
What bitrate should I use for YouTube Live?
Use the row matching the stream’s ingest resolution and frame rate. The following H.264 video bitrates are from YouTube’s live encoder guidance, checked 2026-10-03; they are live-ingest recommendations, not upload-video bitrates. Other codecs have different recommendations.
| Resolution | Frame rate | Recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p | 60 fps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p | 30 fps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p | 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p | 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p | 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p | 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p | 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p | 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p | 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p | 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
These figures are for video. Allow additional reliable upload capacity for audio and transport overhead; a nominal connection speed does not guarantee stable delivery. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream-health messages. Motion-heavy footage can expose problems that a static test pattern will not.

Set x264enc for a two-second keyframe interval
GStreamer’s x264enc property key-int-max is a maximum distance in frames, not seconds. Set caps to the actual frame rate first, then convert the desired interval into frames:
| Pipeline frame rate | key-int-max for about 2 seconds |
|---|---|
| 30 fps | 60 |
| 60 fps | 120 |
For example, a 1080p30 H.264 pipeline uses YouTube’s 14 Mbps video recommendation and a two-second GOP value of 60; at 1080p60, the corresponding values are 17 Mbps and 120. These examples assume the stated ingest format. YouTube recommends keyframes every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds, so do not carry a 30 fps frame count into a 60 fps pipeline unchanged.
The GStreamer reference documents x264enc bitrate in kbit/sec and a default of 2048 kbit/sec. That default is not a YouTube recommendation: set the property to match the target bitrate rather than relying on it. GStreamer documents zero for key-int-max as automatic; choose an explicit frame count when you need to target YouTube’s interval.

Reduce encoder latency without confusing it with viewer latency
Encoder latency is delay and buffering inside your local GStreamer pipeline. Viewer latency is YouTube’s platform setting for how quickly viewers receive the stream. Changing one does not automatically set the other.
The GStreamer x264enc documentation warns that some settings, including defaults, may buffer frames and add latency. It describes tune=zerolatency as a workaround, while warning that it can affect overall encoding quality. Treat it as a trade-off to evaluate with your content and pipeline, not a quality-neutral default.
Encoder buffering can also cause audio/video branches or queues to fill and block a pipeline. GStreamer identifies queue sizing or a multiqueue arrangement as possible pipeline-level remedies. Keep audio and video branches synchronized and inspect queue behavior rather than assuming that a low-latency encoder flag fixes every stall.

Choose YouTube’s latency mode for the stream’s purpose
YouTube’s normal, low, and ultra-low modes govern the viewer experience; they do not change the x264 encoder’s local frame buffering.
| YouTube mode | Best fit | Trade-off described by YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive loop streams | All resolutions and live features are supported. |
| Low | Some audience interaction | YouTube describes most viewers as experiencing less than 10 seconds; 4K is not supported. |
| Ultra-low | Real-time interaction where immediacy matters | YouTube describes most viewers as experiencing less than five seconds; buffering is more likely and 4K is not supported. |
The latency descriptions are typical platform characterizations, not guarantees for each viewer or network. For a scenic, music, ambient, or other repeating program without real-time participation, normal latency is usually the stable, uncomplicated choice. Consider low latency if chat interaction or synchronized participation matters; ultra-low latency trades more buffering risk for faster feedback.
Build the GStreamer path to YouTube
A typical pipeline connects encoded video and audio through an FLV muxer, then sends the muxed stream to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. The source and exact launch line depend on whether you are reading a file, looping decoded media, or supplying live audio/video.

- Prepare video: loop or decode the media, convert it to the desired format, and set caps for the actual resolution and frame rate.
- Encode video: use
x264encwith CBR, the matching bitrate in kbit/sec, and akey-int-maxcalculated for the frame rate. - Parse video: pass the H.264 stream through an H.264 parser before muxing.
- Prepare audio: decode or supply audio and encode it in a format accepted for the chosen RTMP/RTMPS configuration. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; its stereo guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 Kbps. For 5.1, it lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
- Mux and deliver: connect video and audio to
flvmux, then to a sink configured for YouTube’s ingest endpoint and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS; check the local sink’s protocol support before choosing an RTMPS URL.
The GStreamer flvmux reference describes FLV multiplexing. The rtmpsink reference describes sending data to a streaming server via RTMP and setting the destination through location; do not assume that every installed sink or plugin build supports secure RTMPS identically. Inspect the elements available in your installation before treating an example for another system as executable.
Keep the YouTube stream key private. A key is a credential for sending video to your channel; do not publish it in a shared command, log, screenshot, or repository.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Stream is unstable or health warnings appear: check sustained upload capacity against video bitrate plus audio and overhead; verify Wi-Fi or upstream congestion, then test a lower resolution or frame rate if necessary.
- Keyframe warning or inconsistent GOP: confirm the caps frame rate and recompute
key-int-max. Use 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps for an approximately two-second interval. - Unexpectedly low or high bitrate: set
x264enc bitratedeliberately in kbit/sec. Its documented default of 2048 kbit/sec may not match the YouTube target. - Pipeline stalls or branches block: investigate encoder buffering and queue fill. Review queue sizing or a multiqueue arrangement; try
tune=zerolatencyonly if its encoding-quality trade-off is acceptable. - RTMPS connection fails: confirm the selected sink and installed plugin support RTMPS and that the destination URL and stream key are correct. The cited
rtmpsinkreference describes RTMP delivery; its name alone does not establish secure-protocol support in every build. - Viewers report delay or buffering: distinguish local encoder delay from YouTube’s viewer latency mode and viewer network conditions. Lowering encoder buffering will not remove all platform or playback delay; ultra-low viewer latency can increase buffering risk.
- Audio is absent or rejected: check that the audio branch is connected to the muxer and uses a supported codec and sample-rate/bitrate combination for the intended channel layout.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Looping a file successfully through GStreamer does not establish that you have rights to stream its video or audio, or that a channel qualifies for monetization. Use material you own or are licensed to use, and check YouTube’s current policies and any applicable rights for music, gameplay, and other included media before running a continuous broadcast. A technical encoder setting cannot resolve a copyright claim or a channel-policy decision.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud loop keeps going without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on.
