If a YouTube playlist is playing the wrong video next, first start playback from the playlist itself—not from a standalone video. Then check whether the playlist’s saved order is wrong, whether its watch-page queue was rearranged, or whether Autoplay has moved playback to a related video. These are separate behaviors, and each has a different fix.
1. Check that playback is still in the playlist
Open the playlist and start a video from its list. If playback ends and YouTube chooses a related video instead of the next playlist item, check Autoplay. YouTube describes Autoplay as playing another related video after a video ends: YouTube Help: Autoplay videos.
On desktop or mobile, look for the Autoplay switch on the watch screen. The YouTube mobile app also provides an Autoplay control in Settings, and TV settings include an Autoplay option. The setting can differ by device, so check it on the device where the issue occurs. On phones and tablets, YouTube says the next video may not start automatically if you scroll past the player or type a comment or search.
2. Inspect and correct the playlist’s saved order
If the playlist itself shows the videos in the wrong sequence, change the saved arrangement. On desktop, YouTube’s playlist instructions say to click and hold near a video or Short thumbnail, then drag it up or down. The change reorders the playlist. This feature is unavailable for playlists containing only Shorts. See YouTube Help: Create and manage playlists and YouTube Help: Edit playlists.

Use YouTube Studio if you own the playlist
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Choose Playlists.
- Open the playlist’s options and choose Edit.
- Change the video order in the playlist settings, then select Save.
YouTube notes that some features may not be available to supervised accounts. The Studio route is documented in YouTube Help: Manage playlists in YouTube Studio.
3. Separate the saved order from the temporary queue
A playlist’s saved arrangement and the order currently playing are not always the same. YouTube documents a temporary reorder on the watch page: in the playlist panel, drag a video up or down. That changes the playback order in the panel; it does not replace the playlist’s saved order. If playback is wrong only in the current session, inspect that panel before changing the playlist itself. 4. Consider shuffle only in the right context
Google’s YouTube IFrame Player API documentation says shuffle makes videos play in an order different from the playlist creator’s designated sequence; turning shuffle off restores the original order in that API-controlled playback context. This explains what shuffle means for an embedded player, but it does not establish that a viewer’s YouTube app or desktop controls behave identically in every interface. 5. If the order still looks wrong
Record the details before trying broad fixes. The key distinction is whether YouTube skips an item, repeats one, or leaves the playlist to play a related video.

- Which device and YouTube app or browser are you using?
- Does playback start from the playlist page or from an individual video?
- Does it happen with every playlist or only one?
- Does the playlist’s displayed order match the order you expect?
- Does the watch-page playlist panel show a temporary arrangement different from the saved one?
YouTube Help Community posts include reports of playlists or queues skipping items or appearing to shuffle, but these are user reports—not confirmation of a platform-wide defect or an official fix. One thread is dated October 21, 2025; another began May 22, 2026, with follow-up comments in June. The latter returned an error when opened directly, so it offers only limited evidence of reported symptoms. Similar reports alone do not show that every viewer has the same cause.
If YouTube’s playlist-editing interface does not match the documented steps, its editing guidance recommends updating to the current YouTube version. It does not establish that clearing a cache, reinstalling, or rolling back an app fixes out-of-order playback, so do not assume those steps will resolve the issue.
