If your vMix YouTube stream keeps disconnecting, first identify where the failure occurs: in vMix, on the connection between your encoder and YouTube, or only in viewers’ playback. Check vMix’s stream status and session log alongside YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health messages before changing settings. A 24/7 stream has no single guaranteed fix; the right repair depends on what those records show.
First identify what is actually failing
A viewer reporting buffering does not necessarily mean vMix disconnected. Check the local program output, vMix’s stream button and status, and YouTube’s Live Control Room at the same time. Record the event time, including the time zone, and the exact error. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether a change affected the same symptom.
- vMix stopped or reports an error: inspect its live status and session log.
- The vMix stream button changes from red to amber/orange: investigate the outbound network path first; vMix says this state usually indicates network congestion.
- YouTube reports an ingestion or stream-health error: use its timestamped message to check the relevant format, bitrate, audio/video, keyframe, or connection setting.
- vMix remains healthy but viewers buffer: distinguish a viewer playback or delivery problem from an encoder disconnect before changing vMix settings.
Capture vMix evidence before making changes
- When the dropout happens, note the time, whether the vMix Stream button is red, amber/orange, or stopped, and whether the local program output still looks and sounds correct.
- In vMix, open Settings > Streaming and select View Status to inspect technical stream information. The control and status details are described in the vMix Settings guide.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health display for a message with the same timestamp. Preserve the newest session log from
C:ProgramDatavMixstreaming; vMix documents this location and advises sending a log to its support team if you cannot interpret it in Understanding FFMPEG streaming logs.
Use the vMix symptom and log to narrow the cause
FFMPEG reports an I/O disconnect
Messages such as av_interleaved_write_frame(): Unknown error or Input/output error indicate that the stream disconnected. vMix lists a local internet outage, a streaming-provider outage or closure, and third-party antivirus or security software as possible causes—not a diagnosis of any one system. Compare the time with other internet interruptions, ask the provider whether it had an outage, and review security software or network rules before changing encoding settings. The vMix button turns amber/orange after being red
vMix says this usually points to network congestion, while inadequate computer or graphics-card performance is less likely in this specific state. Compare the stream’s outbound bitrate with sustainable upload capacity, and check whether other network traffic or a local-network bottleneck coincides with the change. Do not assume a faster peak speed-test result proves the connection can sustain the stream. vMix describes the status behavior in its FFMPEG streaming log article.

The error appears immediately on connection
Check that the destination URL and stream key match the current values shown in YouTube Live Control Room. An invalid URL or key can prevent connection; a provider may also reject invalid credentials or an expired stream. vMix recommends checking the streaming provider’s correct URL and stream key in Diagnosing Streaming Errors.
“Real-time buffer too full” appears
At startup, this message can simply mean the provider or CDN is taking longer to connect. If it appears after the stream was already red and the status becomes amber/orange, investigate congestion instead. The timing and accompanying status matter; the message alone does not establish the cause. See vMix’s log explanations.

Read YouTube’s timestamped stream-health errors
Open Live Control Room and match the error time to the dropout. YouTube classifies red errors as critical, potentially preventing a stream from starting or causing viewer problems; yellow errors indicate moderate issues that may reduce quality. A warning near a disconnect is useful evidence, but do not treat every warning as the root cause. Use YouTube’s live streaming error messages to interpret the message.
- URL, protocol, or key: confirm the current server URL and stream key in Live Control Room. If a key may be stale or rejected, retrieve the current one there and update the encoder, following YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance.
- Codecs and stream count: check that the video and audio codecs are supported and that the feed has the expected audio/video streams and channel count. YouTube’s error guide calls out unsupported codecs, missing or multiple streams, and channel-count problems.
- Bitrate: check that it fits the selected resolution, codec, and frame rate—and that your actual uplink can sustain it. YouTube advises lowering resolution if bandwidth cannot support the selected setting.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds; its error guidance says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Frame rate and keyframe interval are linked, so check the configured output rather than changing either in isolation.
- RTMPS: if YouTube reports an RTMPS connection error, confirm that vMix is using the supplied
rtmpsserver URL and supports the connection. YouTube says port 443 may be needed when the URL requires it; see Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Match output settings to sustainable upload capacity
YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance provides mode-specific recommendations; the following H.264 video bitrates are examples, not guarantees that a particular connection will remain stable. Audio is not included in these video bitrate figures.

These recommendations are from YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page. Choose a resolution and frame rate your connection can sustain, and consult that page for the exact codec and mode you use rather than borrowing a bitrate from another profile.
Test the connection and encoder under realistic conditions
A speed test can help assess upload capacity, but a short test does not establish that the path will remain stable under the stream’s real workload. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to investigate outbound internet when encoder output looks healthy but the stream fails; if a connection test identifies a problem, contact your internet service provider. If the encoder output itself looks or sounds poor, inspect source routing, encoder errors, and CPU load. Trying another encoder can be a comparative diagnostic, not proof that vMix is the cause. Before a long run, rehearse with the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate, motion, audio, routing, and expected network load. Watch vMix status and logs as well as YouTube stream health. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement before going live and monitoring stream health during the event in its encoder settings guidance.

Use the recommended streaming application
Current vMix help recommends the FFMPEG application; FMLE is described as legacy. Provider compatibility can differ, so confirm support before switching codec or protocol settings. The application options are covered in vMix’s Settings guide.

Consider Network Buffer for unreliable speed—not an outage
vMix’s Network Buffer sets the maximum time available for buffering. Its guidance is to increase the buffer if the maximum available network speed is unreliable. Test the change and account for the added delay. Buffering may tolerate speed variation; it cannot repair a full disconnection, invalid key, provider outage, or saturated or failed connection. Plan monitoring and recovery for a 24/7 stream
The reviewed vMix and YouTube guidance explains setup, logs, stream health, and troubleshooting; it does not establish that vMix will automatically reconnect after every disconnection or guarantee an uninterrupted 24-hour feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so do not assume a longer continuous stream will be archived in the same way. Its encoder setup page also identifies a cloud-service category for continuous prerecorded-video streaming, which is a different workflow from a live vMix production.
- Arrange an operator or alert path to monitor ingestion, viewer playback, encoder status, disk space or local recording, and network connectivity.
- Rehearse how you will restore the stream after a failure, and verify any claimed failover using your exact setup.
- Keep monitoring audio and video quality during operation, as advised in YouTube’s live streaming tips.
