OBS’s automatic reconnect can help when a running OBS process loses its connection; it cannot reopen OBS after Windows has shut it down. After setup, test the whole path through to YouTube’s viewer-facing broadcast.
Know which failure you are trying to recover from
There are two different recovery problems. If OBS remains open but loses its connection, OBS can attempt to reconnect. If OBS closes or Windows reboots, Windows must launch OBS again; reconnect settings alone cannot do that. And an OBS indicator showing that it is streaming does not by itself confirm that the intended YouTube broadcast is live for viewers.
- Temporary connection loss while OBS is running: check OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance and investigate the network route and bitrate.
- OBS closed or VPS rebooted: use Windows startup automation to relaunch OBS with
--startstreaming. - OBS appears connected but viewers do not see the expected stream: check which YouTube broadcast is selected and its auto-start and auto-stop settings.

Prepare OBS and YouTube before automating startup
- Save and verify your OBS setup. Save the profile and scene collection you intend to use. Confirm the YouTube destination and stream key or account connection, then start a manual test stream and check that it reaches the intended broadcast.
- Confirm the YouTube broadcast settings. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, verify the scheduled broadcast and its auto-start and auto-stop options. YouTube supports reusing stream settings, including a stream key and metadata; the exact available controls and interface may change. See YouTube’s guide to managing live stream settings.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or shared document. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
A YouTube encoder connection and the viewer-facing broadcast state are related but distinct. Confirm both during the manual test rather than relying only on OBS’s local streaming status.

Configure OBS to start streaming when Windows launches it
OBS’s documented launch argument for starting a stream is --startstreaming. You can use it with a Windows shortcut or a scheduled task. For automated launches, OBS also requires the task’s working directory—shown as “Start in…” in Windows—to point to the folder containing obs64.exe.
Option 1: Add the argument to a shortcut
- Locate the actual
obs64.exepath on your VPS. Do not assume a path from an older tutorial; installations can differ. - Create or edit a shortcut that targets that executable, and append
--startstreamingafter the executable path. For example, the target should follow this pattern:"C:actualpathobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Replace the example path with the one on your VPS. - Set the shortcut’s “Start in” location to the folder containing
obs64.exe. - Run the shortcut while logged in and confirm that OBS opens the intended profile and begins streaming to the intended YouTube destination.
A shortcut is useful for a straightforward launch, but a scheduled task gives you a Windows task configuration to review and test for startup behavior.

Option 2: Create a Windows scheduled task
- Open Task Scheduler and create a task with a trigger appropriate to your VPS—for example, at system startup if OBS should launch after a reboot. The exact trigger and sign-in behavior should match how the VPS is administered.
- For the task’s action, select the actual
obs64.exeexecutable. Put--startstreamingin the action’s argument field, not in the executable path. - Set “Start in” to the folder containing
obs64.exe. OBS explicitly calls out this working-directory requirement for scheduled or otherwise automated launches. - Choose the task’s run and sign-in settings deliberately. Test under the same Windows account and conditions that will apply after a real reboot; an OBS session that works only in an interactive desktop session may not behave the same way under a different account or launch context.
- Run the task manually once, inspect the result, then test it after a planned VPS reboot.
OBS’s official instructions cover the launch parameter and working directory, but they do not prescribe one universal Task Scheduler configuration for every VPS host or Windows account setup. Validate the choices on your own server.
Allow for network readiness after a VPS reboot
A startup task can run before the VPS has a working network route or DNS resolution. OBS community discussions describe cases where an initial connection failure needs a later retry or a script that waits for connectivity; this is not a guarantee that every VPS has the same boot timing. First test a normal reboot and observe whether the network is ready when OBS starts.

- If OBS reliably connects on the first launch, additional retry logic may not be needed.
- If it starts too early, test a startup delay or a connectivity-aware retry that launches or retries OBS only after the network is available.
- After changing the boot sequence, repeat the reboot test. A delay is not proof of recovery unless YouTube receives the stream afterward.

Test recovery from reboot through to the YouTube watch page
Schedule a maintenance-window test so you can verify the complete recovery path without assuming that a successful Windows task means a successful public stream.

- Before rebooting, note the OBS profile, scene collection, YouTube destination, and scheduled broadcast you expect to use.
- Reboot the VPS using the same procedure that would cause the failure you want to recover from.
- Verify that Windows runs the scheduled task or startup shortcut and that OBS opens with the expected configuration.
- Check that OBS connects to YouTube. If it does not, record whether OBS failed to launch, failed to reach the network, or failed to connect to the ingest server.
- Open Live Control Room and the public watch page. Confirm that the intended broadcast—not merely an encoder connection—is live to viewers.
This end-to-end check is operational guidance: OBS startup automation and YouTube broadcast controls are separate parts of the path, so both need confirmation.

OBS does not open after reboot
- Confirm that the task trigger is enabled and that the action points to the actual
obs64.exe. - Check that
--startstreamingis in the arguments field and that “Start in” points to the executable’s folder. - Test the task under the same Windows account and sign-in conditions expected after reboot.
OBS opens but does not start streaming
- Run the launch action manually and verify the exact argument spelling:
--startstreaming. - Confirm the saved OBS profile and YouTube destination are the ones you tested. If the key or account connection changed, update OBS.
- Check whether the VPS network and DNS are ready when OBS starts. If not, test a delay or connectivity-aware retry.
OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects repeatedly
Restarting OBS may not address an unstable network path or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide identifies dropped frames as a reason to investigate connection stability and bitrate, and notes that intermittent disconnections typically involve the network path to the ingest server. Check those factors before adding a watchdog that repeatedly restarts OBS.

OBS says it is streaming but the broadcast is not live to viewers
Check that OBS is sending to the intended scheduled broadcast and review its YouTube auto-start and auto-stop settings in Live Control Room. OBS’s connection status does not replace verification of the viewer-facing broadcast state. The OBS community’s YouTube streaming guide discusses how scheduled-broadcast auto-stop behavior can affect a later reconnect; check the current YouTube controls because the interface and behavior may change.
You are considering a watchdog or remote controller
A startup task handles launching OBS; a watchdog can add retry logic and monitoring, but it also adds another component to maintain. OBS WebSocket is included with OBS Studio 28 and later.
