Short answer: A Contabo VPS may work for a modest 24/7 YouTube stream, but Contabo’s published 99.9% figure covers the annual-average availability of physical connectivity—not uninterrupted streaming. Whether your broadcast stays live depends on the specific server, its shared CPU resources, the network path to YouTube, and how you handle failures. Test the exact workload before relying on it.
What Contabo’s 99.9% figure does—and does not—mean
Contabo’s Terms & Conditions say physical connectivity for VPS and several other services will be available at an annual average rate of 99.9%. The terms exclude periods caused by matters outside Contabo’s sphere of influence and necessary maintenance after timely notice. This is a contractual commitment about physical connectivity, not a measured uptime result for your particular VPS and not a promise that a YouTube stream will remain uninterrupted. Contabo Terms & Conditions
A stream can stop even while a server remains reachable: the encoder may fail, the VPS may run short of CPU, the connection to YouTube may be disrupted, or YouTube may stop receiving the stream. The cited terms also say Contabo does not guarantee the actual bandwidth available to an individual server unless separately agreed. A plan’s listed port speed should not be treated as a guarantee of sustained upload throughput.
What can interrupt a VPS-hosted stream
Shared CPU and encoding load
Contabo’s VPS documentation says vCPU resources are shared at the hypervisor level. Plan specifications such as vCPU count and RAM do not establish how well a particular instance will encode your video. Performance depends on the workload, including resolution, frame rate, codec, overlays, and source material. Contabo does not publish a YouTube-specific encoder benchmark. Review the current specifications for the plan and location you intend to buy; offerings and details can change. Contabo VPS documentation

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Network throughput and fair use
Contabo says it has no default bandwidth limit for VPS, VDS, or dedicated servers, but reserves the right to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive usage under its fair-use policy. It says customers exceeding that policy will be notified and Contabo will work with them on a suitable solution. That policy does not establish one fixed traffic allowance for every plan or location. Check the current terms for the exact product you choose. Contabo traffic policy
The whole streaming chain
Contabo’s connectivity commitment cannot verify the performance of your encoder, the VPS’s network route to YouTube’s ingest servers, or what viewers experience on playback. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. For a 24/7 channel, that means treating server availability as one part of reliability rather than the whole measure.

How much outbound traffic will a 24/7 stream use?
YouTube recommends a 6–17 Mbps H.264 bitrate range for 1080p60. If the encoder sends at a constant rate, the approximate 30-day traffic is:
| Constant bitrate | Approximate outbound traffic in 30 days |
|---|---|
| 6 Mbps | 1.94 TB |
| 17 Mbps | 5.51 TB |
These figures are calculations from YouTube’s published bitrate range, not traffic statistics published by YouTube or Contabo; they exclude protocol overhead. Your actual traffic depends on the bitrate you configure and how consistently the encoder sends it. YouTube recommends testing your upload bitrate with a speed test. Test the exact setup before making it your 24/7 channel
- Choose the actual plan and region. Check its current vCPU, RAM, storage, port speed, and traffic terms on Contabo’s product pages. These specifications help you select a candidate server; they are not proof that it will sustain your encoding workload.
- Configure the intended stream. Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, overlays, and source material you plan to run continuously. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding and RTMPS; follow its current guidance for encoder settings and ingest configuration at YouTube Help.
- Run a private or unlisted test longer than a quick connection check. Include representative motion and audio. YouTube specifically recommends testing with representative content and monitoring stream health. A short speed test alone cannot show whether encoding and delivery remain stable over time.
- Watch both sides of the connection. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators alongside VPS CPU and network metrics. Look for dropped frames, unstable delivery, CPU saturation, or a stream that disconnects and does not reconnect.
- Test recovery, not just the first connection. Confirm what happens if the encoder exits or the connection to YouTube drops: whether a process restarts, whether it reconnects, and how you will learn that the stream is down. For an important channel, plan alerting and a backup encoder or ingest path. These are operational precautions, not capabilities established by Contabo’s VPS specifications.
When a Contabo VPS is a reasonable choice
A VPS can suit an operator who is comfortable administering a remote server, has measured enough encoding headroom for the intended stream, and has verified sustained delivery to YouTube from the chosen location. It can also be a better continuity fit than a home setup when the operator’s local computer, power, or internet connection is the weak point—but only if the VPS workload and recovery process are tested.
For a broadcast where an interruption matters, do not decide from the SLA alone. The official terms and plan information establish the connectivity commitment, shared-vCPU model, and fair-use conditions; they do not establish actual 24/7 YouTube-stream uptime for a specific instance. No independent measured uptime result for a particular Contabo region and configuration is available here, so your own end-to-end test and monitoring are essential.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your channel plays uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to managing your own VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streaming, not going live from a camera.
