How to Run PRISM Live Studio on a VPS for a 24/7 YouTube Stream

A practical guide to attempting PRISM Live Studio on a Windows VPS, with published system requirements, YouTube encoder settings, reliability checks, and the 12-hour archive caveat.

You can attempt to run PRISM Live Studio on a Windows VPS, but PRISM’s published requirements do not certify VPS hosting or virtual GPUs. Use a Windows 10/11 64-bit instance with a persistent desktop and a GPU path you can verify, then test the complete stream before relying on it. PRISM does not list Linux as a desktop platform. For an unattended 24/7 broadcast, also plan for interruptions and YouTube’s warning that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived.

Can PRISM Live Studio run on a VPS?

PRISM lists desktop support for Windows 10/11 64-bit and Apple Silicon Macs running macOS Monterey 12.3 or later. Its published desktop requirements do not list Linux. A Windows VPS may provide an environment to try, but PRISM’s documentation does not say that VPS deployment is supported or that a provider’s virtual GPU, encoder, or remote desktop capture will work correctly.

That distinction matters: a virtual display advertised by a host is not proof that PRISM can access a supported graphics or encoding path. A generic Linux VPS or a basic CPU-only Windows instance does not match PRISM’s listed Windows requirements. See PRISM’s FAQ and system requirements before selecting a host.

Choose a Windows VPS that can handle PRISM

PRISM’s published Windows specifications vary by workload. These are app requirements, not evidence that an equivalent virtual machine has been validated.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use case PRISM’s published Windows specification
Minimum Windows 10/11 64-bit; 8 GB RAM; NVIDIA GTX 1060 or equivalent; Intel Core i3-9100 or i5-7600 and above
General streaming recommendation Windows 10/11 64-bit; 16 GB RAM or more; NVIDIA RTX 2070 or equivalent; Intel Core i5-8500 or higher
Gaming-stream recommendation Windows 10/11 64-bit; 32 GB RAM or more; NVIDIA RTX 3060 Ti or equivalent; Intel Core i7-9800 or i9-9820 and above

Before paying for a Windows GPU VPS, ask the provider specific questions. These are practical checks based on PRISM’s specifications and YouTube’s network guidance, not a PRISM-approved hosting checklist.

  • Does the instance have a persistent Windows desktop session, and what happens to that session during maintenance or a restart?
  • What GPU is assigned, and does the VM expose a graphics and encoder path that PRISM can actually use? Ask how you can verify it rather than relying on a “virtual display” label.
  • Are CPU and memory sufficient for your scene, capture sources, and chosen resolution and frame rate?
  • Can the connection sustain your outbound stream bitrate, including any backup stream you plan to use?
  • What restart, maintenance, and recovery controls are available, and what interruptions should you expect?

PRISM’s published macOS support is limited to Apple Silicon with macOS 12.3 or later; that is not a substitute for a supported Linux desktop VPS. Platform specifications and recommendations are listed in PRISM’s official FAQ.

Install PRISM and connect YouTube

  1. Set up Windows access. Provision a Windows 10/11 64-bit VPS and confirm you can sign in to its persistent desktop. Install available system and graphics updates, then verify the GPU/encoder path with the provider before treating the VM as suitable.
  2. Install PRISM Live Studio. Download the Windows desktop app from PRISM Live Studio. Open it in the VPS desktop and build the scene you intend to run. Keep the scene lean: PRISM warns that running multiple programs during broadcast can significantly affect CPU, GPU, and memory use; higher capture resolution and frame rate and multiple sources also consume more resources. See PRISM’s performance guide.
  3. Prepare a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup explains where to find these values: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  4. Enter the connection details in PRISM. Use PRISM’s platform account connection or its custom RTMP setup, enter the YouTube stream URL and key, and save. PRISM lists RTMP and HLS (YouTube) among its supported protocols. Labels can vary by app version; follow the account or custom RTMP connection flow in your installed build. Treat the key as a password: do not expose it in screenshots, logs, or shared settings. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room.
  5. Choose conservative encoder settings. For YouTube, use RTMP/RTMPS with H.264 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Match the frame rate to your content, and choose a bitrate your VPS can sustain. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps H.264 for 1080p30, 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 8 Mbps for 720p30, and 8 Mbps for 720p60. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that every PRISM/VPS encoder combination supports every option. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
  6. Check bandwidth and start a test. YouTube advises testing upload speed and keeping about 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup streams if used. At the recommended 10 Mbps for one 1080p30 stream, that arithmetic implies at least 12 Mbps of available outbound capacity; it is a planning calculation, not a separately published YouTube threshold. Start with the actual scene and audio, inspect the YouTube preview and stream health, and monitor audio and video quality. YouTube’s guidance is at YouTube live encoder settings and Troubleshoot your live stream.

Test reliability before leaving it unattended

A VPS does not by itself guarantee 24/7 uptime. Run an extended rehearsal using the exact scene, encoder, bitrate, and network path you plan to use. Check for dropped frames, audio loss, encoder errors, and whether the desktop or PRISM session remains available for the duration. Recheck YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming that a successful initial connection proves sustained delivery.

PRISM’s cited documentation does not establish automatic restart, watchdog, or failover behavior for PRISM on a VPS. If you add infrastructure automation, treat it as separate work: implement it, test the failure cases, and verify that it reconnects to the intended YouTube event without exposing the stream key.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as a reliably archived replay. If keeping replays matters, make and test a separate recording or segmentation plan, and verify how it affects the live event. The cited YouTube and PRISM guidance does not prescribe a PRISM workflow that guarantees a continuous public stream and recoverable archives. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
