Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To keep an OBS stream running overnight, prevent the spare PC from sleeping, choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, and test the complete OBS-to-YouTube path before leaving it unattended. No setting can guarantee an uninterrupted stream: the PC, encoder, network and YouTube connection all need to remain healthy.
1. Stop the spare PC from sleeping
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set the system sleep and hibernate timeouts so they will not activate during the planned broadcast. Turning off the screen is separate from putting the computer to sleep; check the sleep controls, not just the display timeout. Windows options and device behavior vary, so verify the actual PC you plan to use. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance explains the controls.
Keep the computer’s ventilation unobstructed. There is no single safe temperature target or required cooling accessory established for an unspecified PC, so avoid assuming a particular fan or placement will prevent a failure.
2. Make the upload connection predictable
Measure upload speed, not only download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom between the stream bitrate and available upload bandwidth; other devices and network traffic can reduce what OBS actually gets. Treat a speed test as a snapshot rather than a guarantee of sustained performance. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

OBS’s connection guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate, not a universal safe limit. Start conservatively, leave room for variation and monitor the stream’s health during a representative test. If Wi-Fi is unstable, try Ethernet. A cable can improve the local wireless link but will not fix ISP congestion, insufficient upstream service, encoder overload or a fault elsewhere. OBS also recommends checking ingest server selection, VPNs, security or network-prioritization software, network drivers, router/modem and cables when investigating connection trouble. OBS connection troubleshooting was dated September 30, 2024.
3. Set OBS output for YouTube and the actual PC
There is no best preset for every spare computer. Choose resolution and frame rate based on both the available upload capacity and the encoder the machine can handle reliably. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a particular connection or PC can sustain them. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the intended resolution and frame rate.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Rate control: Use CBR, as YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol and codec: YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1. Choose a codec the spare PC can encode reliably; hardware support differs by machine.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s documented guidance supports up to 60 fps. Lowering frame rate, resolution or bitrate can reduce network and encoding demands if tests show instability.
Use YouTube’s figures as settings guidance, then validate performance on the actual PC and connection. YouTube’s live stream settings help also covers managing stream settings and the stream key.
4. Run a full rehearsal before leaving OBS unattended
- Prepare the actual stream setup. Use the same OBS sources, resolution, frame rate, audio and stream configuration planned for overnight.
- Include representative content. Test with the sort of movement and audio the real stream will contain; a static desktop may not reveal the same encoding or source problems.
- Watch OBS status. Check connection status and the dropped-frame counter. Rising dropped frames are a warning that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect the preview and stream-health messages, and verify that the event is accessible to a viewer.
- If recording locally, verify it. Confirm the file exists and its size continues to grow. Do not assume a recording succeeded just because OBS appeared to be running.
YouTube describes backup-encoder failover testing for professional workflows; whether that extra setup makes sense depends on the importance and scale of the stream. A successful rehearsal reduces avoidable risk but cannot prove the stream will remain uninterrupted overnight. YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing and stream setup.

5. Protect the archive and understand the 12-hour caveat
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the full broadcast matters, record locally and check the resulting file. This archive limitation is separate from whether a stream remains live. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
Very long streams also have a viewer-facing DVR caveat: YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. That affects rewind during the broadcast, not the stream’s live status. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

6. Troubleshoot common overnight-stream problems
OBS dropped frames or disconnects
OBS identifies dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. Check upload stability, lower the bitrate if it is too high for the sustained connection, try a wired link if Wi-Fi is unstable, and review the router, modem, cable, drivers, ingest server and software that may interfere with or prioritize network traffic. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps.
Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no connection warning
Buffering can come from viewers’ devices or connections rather than the encoder’s connection. If broad accessibility matters, consider reducing bitrate or output quality and check the result with viewers on different connections. See OBS’s buffering troubleshooting guide.

YouTube reports encoder, image or audio trouble
Review YouTube’s Live Control Room messages, inspect OBS output and CPU load, and check a local recording if available to help distinguish an encoder/source issue from a playback or ingest problem. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guide.
The PC disappears from the stream
Check sleep and hibernate timeouts first. If those are configured not to activate, investigate power and system stability on the specific computer; the symptom alone does not identify a cause.
The archive is missing after a long stream
Separate the question of whether OBS and YouTube stayed live from whether YouTube created an archive. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, so use and verify a local recording when preservation matters.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube without leaving a home PC running, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
