To switch a YouTube Live stream key, confirm you are in the correct channel and have owner or manager access, reset the key in YouTube Studio if you need a replacement, enter the new key in your encoder, then verify the preview in Live Control Room before starting the scheduled tour. A key that is still trusted can usually be reused; you do not need to replace it for every broadcast.
Before changing the key
Confirm the channel and operator
Open YouTube Studio for the branded property-tour channel that owns the scheduled event. Check the channel name and confirm the person making the change has an owner or manager role. YouTube says only channel owners and managers can reset a stream key. A Manager can manage live streams; Editors cannot reset keys, and Viewers cannot see the key under channel permissions. See YouTube’s channel permissions guidance.
Use delegated channel permissions rather than sharing a Google Account password. YouTube’s current guidance for Brand Accounts is to manage access through channel permissions.
Decide whether to reuse or reset
| Choice | Use it when | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Reuse a custom stream key or stream settings | The key is trusted and the team wants to keep using it. | A custom key can be reused. YouTube’s Reuse settings option carries forward the prior stream’s key and other settings; check that the destination stream and its metadata are correct. |
| Reset the key | The key may have been exposed or the team intentionally needs a replacement credential. | YouTube generates a new key. Copy it into the encoder before sending the feed, then verify the preview. |
YouTube describes stream keys as a password and address for the stream. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it casually. Its help page explains both managing live stream settings and reusing a custom key.

How to reset a YouTube stream key
- In YouTube Studio for the correct channel, choose Create, then Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Select Stream.
- In Stream key, select Reset beside the hidden key.
- Copy the newly generated key and keep it private while you update the encoder.
YouTube describes resetting as an option when a key may be compromised. Resetting and updating the encoder are separate steps: replacing the Studio key does not itself put the replacement into your encoder.
Where to enter the YouTube stream key in your encoder
- Open the configured encoder’s stream or broadcast settings and locate its Stream Key field.
- Replace the old value with the new key copied from Live Control Room. Do not add spaces or expose the key in a public screenshot, shared document, or broadcast overlay.
- If the encoder also requests a server or ingestion URL, check the YouTube stream settings and use the URL shown there. YouTube’s general encoder workflow uses both the YouTube Live server URL and stream key; the exact menu names depend on the encoder.
- Save or apply the settings. Confirm the encoder is configured for the intended scheduled event and channel before starting its feed.
The correct encoder menus vary by software or hardware. These general steps do not assume OBS or any particular encoder.

Verify the change before the property tour
- Start sending the encoder feed to YouTube while leaving the event unstarted.
- Wait for the incoming preview to appear in Live Control Room. If it does not appear, do not click Go live; check the key and, if applicable, the server URL in the encoder.
- When the preview is present and the operator is ready, click Go live for the scheduled event.
- Monitor stream health during the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring the stream; allow time for those checks in the production schedule.
YouTube documents resetting the key and updating the encoder, but does not promise a seamless, zero-interruption handoff. Plan the change before the event and do not assume replacing a key while already broadcasting will preserve the live feed.
Troubleshooting a key change
- Reset is unavailable or the key is not visible: confirm the signed-in account is operating the correct channel and has owner or manager permissions. Editors cannot reset keys, and Viewers cannot view them.
- The encoder does not connect after reset: check that its Stream Key field contains the newly copied key, not the old one. If it requests a server URL, verify that against the YouTube stream settings as well.
- The wrong event or channel is receiving the feed: stop before going live. Recheck the channel in Studio and the scheduled event selected in the encoder workflow.
- The preview is missing: wait for the feed, then inspect the encoder’s stream settings and connection. Do not treat the event as ready until the expected preview is present.
- The team wants a stable key for repeat tours: use a custom stream key or reuse stream settings only when the key remains trusted, and review carried-forward metadata before the next event.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a property channel that needs prerecorded tours running continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live production service.
