Yes. OBS can stream to YouTube from a VPS around the clock if the server can encode your chosen output and sustain its upload bitrate. But neither OBS nor a VPS guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast: you must test the workload, monitor stream health and plan how to recover from failures. A separate issue is the replay—YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What a VPS-hosted OBS stream does—and does not—solve
OBS runs on the VPS, encodes or sends the configured video and audio, and connects to YouTube using the stream URL and key. The video source might be a scene or other content configured in OBS; the VPS must be able to handle that source and the continuous upload. Because the host is remote, your personal computer does not need to stay on. You take on responsibility for the VPS configuration, provider network and recovery plan instead.
This setup is feasible, but there is no universal VPS specification that guarantees it will work. YouTube and OBS do not publish a minimum VPS CPU, GPU or memory requirement for 24/7 streaming. Performance depends on the operating system, OBS build, scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, encoder and the host’s sustained network capacity. Check the chosen provider’s current hardware, bandwidth allowances, transfer charges and hosting terms before committing.
Check YouTube eligibility and create the encoder stream
- Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If live streaming is being enabled for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Obtain the stream URL and stream key for the event. The key is a secret: do not put it in a public script, screenshot or code repository. If exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Prepare the VPS. Install OBS on a VPS configuration that supports your intended video source, encoder and continuous upload. Confirm the provider’s current operating-system support, hardware acceleration options and network terms. No fixed instance size can be recommended from the available official guidance.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, select YouTube as the service if available, or configure the YouTube stream endpoint and key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings guidance for the endpoint and settings.
- Set output for the actual VPS and source. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate that your encoder can sustain and that suit the source. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple viewing formats, so the ingest settings are not a promise that every viewer will receive that exact format.
- Run a representative test before relying on it. Test the actual scenes, motion, audio and duration you intend to stream. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, not only the OBS preview. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload capacity with a 20% margin above the stream bitrate; count all concurrent outgoing streams in that total.
Choose settings and capacity without guessing at VPS size
| Decision | What to weigh | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | Higher output settings can increase encoding workload and bitrate demand. | Test the intended settings on the actual VPS with representative content; official guidance does not define a universal vCPU or GPU minimum. |
| Encoder choice | Available software or hardware encoding depends on the host and configuration. | Verify the encoder is available and can sustain the workload during a long test, rather than assuming a VPS includes usable acceleration. |
| Bitrate and upload | The provider’s sustained outbound path must carry the stream continuously; brief speed-test results alone do not establish that. | Allow the 20% upload headroom recommended by YouTube’s streaming tips. Include a backup stream if it will run concurrently. |
| One process or redundancy | A single OBS process is simpler. Process monitoring, automatic restart or a backup encoder can improve recovery options but add configuration and testing work. | Test what happens if OBS stops, the VPS reboots or the connection drops. These measures are operational choices, not a guarantee of failover. |
Plan for disconnections and host failures
Continuous service depends on the complete chain: OBS, the VPS, the provider network and YouTube ingest. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and test recovery deliberately before treating the setup as unattended. YouTube’s event guidance recommends testing encoder failover; that does not mean OBS or a VPS automatically guarantees recovery to the same event.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check the Live Control Room health messages during setup and while monitoring the broadcast.
- Test the recovery path by stopping or disconnecting the encoder in a controlled test, then confirm how you will restart OBS or switch to a backup source.
- If OBS reports connection trouble, use the OBS Project stream connection troubleshooting guide to diagnose the connection.
- Confirm how the VPS behaves after a process crash, host maintenance or reboot. Any automatic restart or monitoring you configure needs its own test.
Understand the archive and DVR tradeoffs
A broadcast continuing to ingest is not the same as YouTube preserving a complete replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local backup if the recording matters. For a continuous station, plan a separate recording or divide the broadcast into archive-friendly segments rather than relying on one complete YouTube VOD. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
DVR rewind is a separate concern: YouTube says rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Check YouTube’s DVR guidance if viewers need to rewind during a long broadcast.

Costs and operational considerations
A VPS avoids keeping a personal desktop powered on, but hosting costs and limits depend on the provider and chosen configuration. Check the current price, sustained bandwidth policy, data-transfer charges, hardware availability and terms directly with the provider; these can change and no particular VPS provider is established as suitable here. Include the time and complexity of monitoring, recovery and any independent archive in your decision.
