In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, select the Stream tab in Live Control Room, and copy Stream URL from the stream settings. Paste it into your encoder’s Server or RTMP server field. Copy the separate Stream key into the encoder’s key field.
Find and copy the URL and stream key

Open YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.

Select the Stream tab. If this is your first stream, create a stream when prompted. For a repeat stream, YouTube may load the previous stream settings and key.

In Stream settings, locate Stream URL and copy it.

In your encoder, paste the URL into the field labelled Server, Server URL, or RTMP server. The wording varies by encoder.

Copy the separate Stream key into the encoder’s Stream Key field. The URL is the server address; the key is a credential, similar to a password.

Start the encoder. For a scheduled stream, wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room, then click Go live there.

If your encoder offers a YouTube preset, YouTube recommends using it; provide the stream key if requested. Otherwise, enter the URL and key manually in their matching fields. These steps reflect YouTube Help instructions accessed on October 3, 2026; interface labels and placement may change.
Choose the right protocol: RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS
| Protocol | What to use | Important check |

| RTMP | The ordinary Stream URL shown by default in stream settings. | Use it when the encoder is configured for RTMP. |
| RTMPS | In the Stream tab, click the lock icon by Stream URL to reveal and copy the secure RTMPS URL. | Your encoder must support RTMPS, and its selected protocol must match the URL. |
| HLS | A stream key configured for HLS updates the Stream URL to an https address. |
Use that URL with an HLS-compatible encoder; do not put it into an RTMP-only setup. |
These addresses are not interchangeable: check the protocol selected in the encoder against the protocol used by the YouTube stream key. YouTube documents the RTMPS option in Encrypt your stream using RTMPS and the HLS URL distinction in Set up an HLS stream.

Fix common connection and go-live problems

The encoder cannot connect: Check that the server field contains the Stream URL, not the key, and that the key is in the separate key field. Confirm the encoder supports the selected protocol.

The URL begins with https: This can mean the stream key is set to HLS. Check that the encoder supports HLS rather than expecting RTMP or RTMPS.

The encoder is sending, but the scheduled stream is not live: Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room and click Go live there.

You cannot find the expected stream settings: Confirm you are on the Stream tab; for a first stream, complete the prompt to create it.

Protect or reset a compromised stream key
Treat the stream key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset the key from the Stream tab. After resetting it, replace the old key in your encoder with the new one. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings.
