To edit subtitles, correct the words against the audio, adjust each caption’s timing, preview the result, then publish the track or export it in a format your destination accepts. For a YouTube video, you can do this in YouTube Studio; in Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, you can work with captions alongside the video on a timeline. First decide whether viewers should be able to switch subtitles on and off, or whether the text should be permanently burned into the picture.
Choose how subtitles will be delivered
A subtitle or caption file contains text and timestamps that control when each line appears. Some formats can also carry positioning or style information. Before editing, decide how the finished video will be delivered:
- Hosted language track: Upload or edit captions on a platform such as YouTube. Viewers can use the platform’s caption controls.
- Sidecar file: Deliver a separate subtitle file with the video, if the destination supports that format.
- Burned-in subtitles: Render the text into the picture. It remains visible in the video and cannot be switched off separately.
Check the receiving platform or delivery brief before choosing an export. Premiere documents both SRT sidecar and burned-in output. Blackmagic Design lists TTML, SRT, and VTT exports in its DaVinci Resolve Edit product information, as well as an option to render subtitles into the finished video. Supported formats and features can depend on the application version and workflow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open YouTube Studio and select Subtitles from the video-management menu.
- Select the video, then choose the language track you want to change. If the captions were automatically created, YouTube’s documented workflow is to duplicate and edit that track.
- Edit each caption line’s text. Check it against the audio rather than assuming the automatic transcript is correct.
- Select a caption line to edit its timestamps in the timing fields. You can also download the caption file, edit it in a plain-text editor, and upload the revised file.
- Preview the video from beginning to end, then publish your changes.
Check words that transcription commonly gets wrong
Replay names, game titles, character names, technical terms, numbers, overlapping dialogue, and noisy sections. Automatic transcription is a draft, not a final check: compare the text with what is actually audible. Preserve a speaker’s intended meaning rather than silently rewriting their dialogue.
Check timing in context
Watch the video while following the captions. A line should not appear before the words are spoken, vanish before the phrase finishes, or remain on screen into unrelated dialogue. If you edit timestamps in a downloaded file, reopen or upload the revised track and preview it in the video; a well-formed text file alone does not confirm that its timing looks right in playback.
How to create and refine subtitles in Premiere Pro
Adobe’s documented Premiere workflow begins with transcription, but the generated transcript should be reviewed before you create captions from it. The precise controls may vary with the Premiere version.

How to work with subtitles in DaVinci Resolve
Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve Edit product information lists subtitle input including TTML, SRT, and XML, plus embedded MXF/IMF subtitle input. It lists TTML, SRT, and VTT as export options, and describes rendering subtitles into the finished video.
- Import a subtitle file in a format supported by your Resolve workflow, or create and edit subtitles in the project timeline.
- Correct wording against the audio and align each caption’s start and end with the dialogue.
- Preview the complete sequence to check that captions appear and disappear at the intended moments.
- Export a separate subtitle file in a format accepted by the destination, or render subtitles into the video if they must always be visible.
Do not assume that support for a listed file type means every container or workflow is supported. Check the current Resolve documentation and the destination’s requirements for your particular export.

Fix timing and legibility before publishing
Review each caption’s start and end
Listen for the actual beginning and end of a line rather than aligning captions only to cuts in the picture. Where a caption contains several words, make sure its display duration gives viewers time to read it without leaving it on screen across the next unrelated line. Preview at normal playback speed after making changes.
Keep the text readable over gameplay
For burned-in captions, inspect the text against bright, busy, and high-contrast scenes. Adjust font, size, and color where the editor permits, then view the video at a realistic playback size. A style that looks clear in a large editing preview may be difficult to read on a smaller screen.
Do a final pass with sound and picture
- Confirm the text matches the spoken words and preserves the intended meaning.
- Check that each line begins and ends with the right speech.
- Look for overlaps, missing lines, and captions assigned to the wrong language.
- Verify that the exported sidecar or hosted track opens as expected, or that burned-in text is visible in the rendered video.
Which editing route should you use?
| Route | Documented capabilities | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio | Add a language track; edit caption text and timestamps; download a track for plain-text editing and upload the revision. | The video is managed on YouTube and you want to change its hosted captions there. |
| Adobe Premiere Pro | Review and edit a transcript, create timeline captions, adjust font, size, and color, and export burned-in captions or an SRT sidecar. | You already edit the video in Premiere or need its documented caption workflow. |
| DaVinci Resolve | Import listed subtitle formats including TTML, SRT, and XML; export TTML, SRT, or VTT, or render subtitles into the video. | You use Resolve and need an export option listed by Blackmagic Design. |
There is no single best editor for every video. Choose based on where the video will be published, whether subtitles must be switchable, what formats the destination accepts, and which editor you already use.

Common subtitle problems and fixes
The automatic captions contain wrong words
Cause: Names, specialist vocabulary, overlapping speech, or noisy audio can be transcribed incorrectly. Fix: Replay the affected section and correct the transcript or caption text against the audio before publishing.
The words are right, but the captions are early or late
Cause: The caption timestamps do not match the spoken line. Fix: Edit the start and end times in YouTube Studio or adjust the caption on the editor timeline, then preview the surrounding sequence.
The subtitle file does not appear at the destination
Cause: The receiving service may not accept the exported format, or the track may not have been uploaded or published as required. Fix: Check the destination’s current format requirements, export an accepted format, and confirm that the track is attached to the correct video and language.

Burned-in captions are hard to read
Cause: Text styling may blend into the footage or be too small at typical playback size. Fix: Adjust font, size, or color in the editor, then inspect the rendered video over both light and busy scenes.
Captions were edited but viewers still see the old version
Cause: Changes may not have been published, or the revised file may not have replaced the intended track. Fix: Publish the edits in YouTube Studio or confirm the replacement upload, then reopen the video and verify the updated captions.
