If the YouTube stream-key field is blank in OBS after you reconnect your account, first check whether OBS is using its linked-account workflow. That workflow and manually entering a stream key are separate setup methods, so a blank key field may be expected rather than evidence that your key was erased. Choose the method you want, then follow the matching steps below.
Why the stream-key field may be blank
OBS supports connecting a YouTube account through Settings → Stream. When you use that integrated account workflow, OBS can use the linked account and its YouTube broadcast controls instead of asking you to paste a key into the manual-key field. Manual key entry is a different route. The field being blank on its own does not establish that reconnecting erased your key or that OBS has a defect.
The precise reconnect symptom is not confirmed as a current OBS bug in the available official guidance. OBS’s integration guide also marks its integration section as work in progress and refers to OBS Studio 27.1 and newer, so interface details may differ between versions.
Choose the OBS connection method you want
| Method | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Linked YouTube account | OBS is connected to your Google account and uses its YouTube integration. | Keep the account linked and use the integrated YouTube workflow. You may not need a manual stream-key field. |
| Manual stream key | You copy a key from YouTube Studio and provide it to OBS. | Use the YouTube RTMPS/manual-key setup in OBS, then copy the key from YouTube Studio into the key field. |
Fix the blank field step by step
- Check the selected service and connection. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Confirm that the service is YouTube RTMPS and see whether OBS shows YouTube as a linked account. If you intend to use the linked-account method, continue with that integration; a blank manual-key box may be consistent with this choice.
- Decide whether you need manual entry. If you want OBS to use the connected account and YouTube integration, leave the account linked. If you specifically want to supply a key yourself, switch to the YouTube RTMPS/manual stream-key route in OBS. OBS forum guidance reports that disconnecting the linked account made a key box appear for one user, but that 2023 report is anecdotal, not a guaranteed fix for current versions. If you try it, first make sure you can sign back in to the account.
- Verify the active OBS profile. Profiles save Stream settings, including the connected account. Check that OBS is using the profile you expect. If you recently switched profiles or imported one, its saved connection settings may differ from the profile you were using before.
- Copy the key from YouTube Studio for manual setup. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, open the Stream tab, and copy the value under Stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as the credential and address that tell an encoder where to send its feed and let YouTube accept it. Do not paste the stream URL into the key field: the ingest URL and stream key are separate values.
- Reset the key only if necessary. In Live Control Room, use Reset beside the hidden stream key if you need a new one, then update OBS with that newly generated key. Resetting invalidates the old key for this setup, so replace it in the encoder before trying to go live. You must be a channel owner or manager to reset a key; editors and viewers cannot.
- Try a clean reconnect or get support if the interface still differs. If the selected workflow and active profile are correct but the expected controls are still missing, note your OBS version and contact OBS support rather than assuming a particular release has a confirmed reconnect bug. YouTube advises contacting the streaming software’s support when you log in through third-party software without using a stream key.
If the field is present but the stream still fails
A visible key field and a blank key field are different problems. If OBS starts sending but YouTube reports errors, update the encoder and check the encoder’s reported errors and outbound connection. If you reset the key, verify that OBS has the replacement key rather than the previous one. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
