You can run a continuous YouTube Live broadcast from an Ubuntu VPS by looping local media with FFmpeg and sending the encoded feed to YouTube’s ingest server. You need a verified channel with live streaming enabled, a stable outbound connection, and a process supervisor such as systemd. A restart policy can bring FFmpeg back after a process failure, but it cannot guarantee that YouTube is receiving healthy video; monitor the stream in YouTube Studio.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu VPS with enough CPU for your chosen encoding settings, enough disk for your media and any local recording, and sustained outbound bandwidth to YouTube. These are selection criteria, not a recommendation for a specific provider or server size.
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube Studio supplies the server URL and stream key. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- FFmpeg, media that you have the right to use, and a way to check stream health after launch.
No special YouTube encoder configuration for India is established here. An India-located VPS is not automatically the best choice: test the actual instance’s sustained route to YouTube ingest and check the provider’s bandwidth and usage terms.
Choose a VPS and prepare your media
Check capacity and terms
Software encoding uses CPU, while continuous streaming requires a stable outbound connection for as long as the broadcast runs. Before committing to a server, confirm its sustained bandwidth terms and test upload stability from the VPS itself. A provider’s advertised port speed alone does not establish throughput to YouTube. No specific India VPS provider, price, or route performance is established here.
Install FFmpeg and test the files
Install FFmpeg from a trusted Ubuntu or package source. Put the files in a stable directory and verify that FFmpeg can read and decode each one from beginning to end. If clips have different dimensions or frame rates, normalize them before building a playlist; mismatched inputs can cause inconsistent output or failures at transitions. Keep the media path available after reboots.

A practical architecture is local media or a playlist → FFmpeg loop → encoded audio/video → YouTube ingest. A published example of this pattern uses FFmpeg and systemd, but it is an implementation example rather than an official YouTube recipe or an uptime guarantee: 24/7 YouTube Stream — Setup & Ops Notes.
Enable YouTube Live and get the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for that stream, then configure FFmpeg to send to that destination.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not commit it to source control, expose it in screenshots, or leave it in broadly readable scripts or logs. If it is exposed, regenerate it in YouTube Studio and update your service configuration.
YouTube’s current help says a channel must be verified and have had no live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. Its help also lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 streams per stream key; check the current live-stream setup page if your workflow approaches those limits.

Set FFmpeg’s output for YouTube
Protocol, codec, and rate control
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection when your encoder and endpoint support it. Its encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). For a straightforward FFmpeg setup, use a codec and audio format supported by your chosen command and configured consistently with the stream settings in YouTube Studio. Bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes
Choose settings that fit both the desired picture and the VPS’s real capacity. YouTube’s current settings page recommends 4 Mbps for H.264 at 240p–720p and 30 fps; that figure is not a universal target for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. Use the applicable row in YouTube’s current table for your output. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.

Measure available upload from the VPS, not from your home connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate; its streaming tips also advise testing and monitoring stream health. Leave capacity for protocol overhead and normal variation rather than configuring a stream at the server’s apparent maximum.
Protect the stream key in the command
Use the YouTube server URL and key from Studio as the output destination. Avoid putting a live key into a public command example or a file readable by other users. Prefer a dedicated, unprivileged service account and a secret-storage method or configuration file with restrictive permissions. The precise FFmpeg command depends on the input and encoding settings; test the complete command with your own media and destination before relying on it.

Loop the video and run FFmpeg under systemd
- Create a stable media or playlist input. Confirm every referenced file exists and is readable by the service account. Test the playlist and transitions before connecting it to a public broadcast.
- Run FFmpeg as a dedicated unprivileged user. Keep the process and its media access separate from root where practical, and keep any configuration containing the stream key access-restricted.
- Create a systemd service. Configure it to start at boot and restart when FFmpeg exits. A
Restart=alwayspolicy is one example used by published setup notes, but it only supervises the process; it does not verify YouTube playback. - Enable and start the service. Check systemd’s service status and logs, then confirm that the stream appears in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Test recovery deliberately. Confirm the service starts after a VPS reboot and that an exited FFmpeg process is restarted. Check the actual YouTube preview and stream-health messages after each test.
Systemd can react to an exited process, but an upstream network problem, a frozen input, an encoding stall, or a stream rejected by YouTube may require separate detection. If a dropped broadcast must be noticed quickly, add an external alert and check the Live Control Room and public playback page rather than treating a running process as proof of a healthy stream. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health.

Do not rely on one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast to create a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, make a local recording backup or plan shorter sessions. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on very long streams. Keep copyright and monetization rules in view
Rights and live-stream interruptions
Use content for which you have the necessary rights, including music rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if identified material remains or a strike applies. For licensed material, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s live-stream terms and copyright guidance before broadcasting.
A continuous loop is not an automatic route to monetization
Technical uptime does not establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s monetization policy says repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible under its inauthentic-content policy; the page records a clarification dated July 15, 2025. Assess the originality and value of the actual channel rather than assuming a loop qualifies. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
