Start by checking OBS’s dropped-frame counter and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health at the time of a disconnect. If OBS is dropping frames, the likely problem is the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server—not necessarily OBS itself. Measure stable upload capacity, lower bitrate if needed, then test the network path one change at a time.
1. Identify what is actually failing
Keep OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator visible, and note the time of each failure. OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. OBS connects directly to the selected platform, without an OBS-operated intermediary streaming server. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide and its Help Portal.
Separate sender-side problems from playback complaints. Dropped frames point to the computer-to-server connection. If OBS stays connected but viewers report buffering, investigate playback conditions separately rather than assuming the broadcast connection has failed.
2. Check upload capacity and choose a sustainable bitrate
Test upload speed under conditions like the live broadcast, with other household or office traffic in mind. Download speed and an advertised plan speed do not show how much upload capacity is available to OBS at that moment. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom; if you send both primary and backup feeds, allow for both feeds plus that extra room. OBS’s 2024 troubleshooting guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate starting point, not a guarantee for a shared or variable connection.

If the connection is unstable, reduce OBS’s video bitrate and retest. This trades image quality for more room on the connection; change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it helped. Match the bitrate to the actual encoder, resolution and frame rate rather than treating any platform recommendation as proof your specific connection can sustain it.

These are YouTube’s listed encoder recommendations, not measurements of Indian ISP performance. Consult the full YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the row matching your setup. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube calls for CBR and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds.

3. Isolate the network path methodically
After recording the current result, test one network or OBS option at a time and note whether disconnects change.
- Try another ingest server if OBS makes another server available. A change in results is useful evidence, not proof of which network hop caused the issue.
- Compare with another streaming service only as a diagnostic. If that test works, the issue may be destination- or route-specific; it does not identify the responsible network segment.
- On Windows, test OBS Network Optimizations and TCP pacing individually, following the options in the OBS troubleshooting guide.
- Keep Bind to IP set to Default. You can temporarily test IPv4 Only as a diagnostic; restore IPv4/IPv6 if it makes no difference.
- Consider Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment if congestion varies. It can reduce bitrate during congestion, but does not repair the underlying cause and may lower image quality.
4. Check Wi-Fi, software and network equipment
OBS identifies Wi-Fi instability as a possible cause and recommends wired connectivity for streaming. If practical, test the same broadcast over Ethernet before changing other variables. A cable is only relevant if you need to test a wired connection or replace one shown to be faulty; buying one will not fix ISP congestion, insufficient upload capacity, OBS configuration, or an ingest-route problem.

- Temporarily test whether a VPN or security software is interfering. If stopping security software changes the result, turn it back on and add an OBS exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Check network-prioritization or “boost” utilities that may affect OBS traffic.
- Update the network adapter driver from your computer or motherboard maker.
- Restart the modem and router; inspect the cable, router, modem, network card, switches and extenders for possible faults.
If you are unsure whether equipment is faulty, OBS recommends contacting your ISP before replacing it. The cited guidance does not compare Indian providers or establish performance for a particular city, access technology or route.
5. Monitor YouTube during a representative test
Before relying on a 24/7 broadcast, test with representative motion and audio. During the stream, compare OBS’s indicators with stream health and error messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time and monitoring stream health; its live stream metrics instructions for computers explain where to inspect metrics.

6. Keep a local archive of a continuous stream
Live continuity and archive capture are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Make a local recording and periodically verify that the file is growing and usable; YouTube’s archive guidance does not establish a restart interval or guarantee capture for every stream.
7. Escalate with evidence if disconnects continue
Contact your ISP with disconnect timestamps, OBS logs, upload-test results, YouTube stream-health messages and the tests you have already performed. OBS notes that ISP-side changes or unexpected congestion along the route may be outside the streamer’s control. Ask your provider to investigate your connection and route to YouTube’s ingest service; the available guidance does not establish a best ISP, plan or access technology for India.
