An M4A file is an audio file with the .m4a extension, commonly containing AAC audio but sometimes Apple Lossless (ALAC). The extension alone does not tell you whether the audio is lossy or lossless. To convert one, choose an output format your destination supports, then export it with a compatible app such as Audacity or, on Mac, Apple Music or GarageBand.
What is an M4A file?
M4A is an Apple-associated audio file type and filename extension. Apple Developer Documentation identifies it as the M4A audio type with the extension .m4a (Apple Developer Documentation).
M4A describes the file type, not one specific audio codec. It commonly contains AAC audio, which is compressed and lossy, but it can also contain Apple Lossless (ALAC). Microsoft lists AAC/M4A and ALAC as separate audio profiles and notes that M4A can use either (Microsoft Learn; Microsoft Support).
M4A, AAC, and ALAC are not interchangeable terms
- M4A: the file type or extension.
- AAC: a compressed, lossy codec that M4A files commonly use.
- ALAC: Apple Lossless, a lossless codec that can also be associated with M4A.
Renaming a file’s extension does not change its codec or convert the audio. A file that will not open may need an app that supports the codec inside it.

Is M4A lossless?
Not necessarily. An M4A file using AAC is lossy; one using ALAC is lossless. You cannot determine which applies from the extension alone. Check the file’s details in an audio app that displays codec information, or consult the source that supplied the file.
Converting lossy AAC to WAV can produce an uncompressed PCM file, but it cannot restore audio detail discarded when the AAC file was encoded. Converting AAC to another lossy codec can add another lossy encoding step. Audacity describes AAC as compressed and lossy (Audacity audio file formats).

How do I open an M4A file?
Try an audio player or editor that supports the codec inside the file. If an editor does not recognize M4A, it may lack the required import support. Audacity documents using its optional FFmpeg library to import additional formats, including M4A (Audacity: Installing FFmpeg).
Some M4A files may be DRM-protected and restricted to particular software. Audacity notes that its FFmpeg-based import does not remove such restrictions (Audacity: Importing audio from video). Changing the extension will not bypass DRM or make an unsupported codec playable.

How do I convert M4A to MP3?
First check the receiving app, device, or service for its preferred format and settings. If it does not specify a format, Audacity presents MP3 as a widely accepted option. Its example bitrate guidance for speech and music is general advice, not a universal requirement; follow the destination’s instructions when available (Audacity: Best audio format).
On a Mac: Apple Music or GarageBand
Apple Support names Apple Music and GarageBand as Mac apps that can convert M4A audio to MP3 (Apple Support). The exact menus can vary by app version, so follow the conversion instructions for the version installed on your Mac.

With Audacity
- Make sure the file is eligible for import. If Audacity cannot open the M4A, install and configure its optional FFmpeg support, then try importing the file again. DRM-protected audio may remain restricted.
- Open the M4A in Audacity. Use the app’s import or open workflow and confirm that the audio appears as a track.
- Choose an export format. Open Audacity’s export workflow and select MP3. If MP3 or another needed format is not listed, check the installed export support; Audacity documents FFmpeg-enabled export for M4A/AAC (Audacity FAQ: Installation and Plug-ins).
- Set the destination and available audio options. Choose a filename and location, then use the destination’s specified bitrate or other settings. If none are specified, use Audacity’s format guidance as a starting point.
- Export and verify the result. Open the exported MP3 in a player or import it into the destination app to check that it plays as expected.
Which output format should you choose?
| Goal | Suitable choice | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Deliver audio to an app or service | The format and settings required by that destination | If no requirements are available, Audacity describes MP3 as broadly accepted; compatibility depends on the receiving system. |
| Keep an uncompressed working copy for editing | WAV | WAV can store uncompressed PCM, but converting lossy AAC to WAV does not recover information already lost. |
| Keep a compressed file | AAC/M4A, if the destination supports it | Audacity’s documented M4A/AAC export workflow requires FFmpeg support. AAC is lossy. |
There is no single best format for every use. Audacity advises choosing according to the destination’s requirements and identifies MP3 as a broadly accepted fallback when those requirements are absent (Audacity: Best audio format).
Common conversion problems and fixes
- M4A is missing from Audacity’s import or export choices: check whether FFmpeg support is installed and enabled; Audacity’s documented additional-format workflows depend on it.
- The file will not import even with FFmpeg: it may use an unsupported codec or be DRM-protected. Try the software permitted by the file’s source, and do not assume that changing the extension will help.
- The converted file plays, but the destination rejects it: check the destination’s required container, codec, and audio settings, then export to those specifications.
- The WAV export sounds no better than the M4A: WAV can avoid further lossy compression, but it cannot restore detail removed from a lossy AAC source.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your question about M4A is tied to keeping a YouTube channel live with prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option: it loops uploaded videos on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running on your home computer; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly price is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo or start the free day.
