There is no single best frame rate for every YouTube live stream. YouTube supports live encoder frame rates up to 60 fps. Choose 60 fps when your content has frequent or fast motion and your encoder and connection can sustain the required settings; choose 30 fps when motion is limited or a more reliable stream matters more than extra smoothness. Test with representative movement and audio before going live.
30 fps or 60 fps: which should you choose?
| Choose | When it fits | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| 30 fps | Talking-head streams, presentations, and mostly static scenes. | Usually demands less bitrate than 60 fps at the same resolution and codec, but fast movement may look less smooth. |
| 60 fps | Games and other content with frequent or fast motion, if your encoder and connection can sustain it. | Requires a higher recommended bitrate than 30 fps at some matching resolution and codec settings. |
These are practical choices, not a universal YouTube ranking or a promise of picture quality. A stable 30 fps stream is preferable to a nominal 60 fps setting that causes interruptions. YouTube advises choosing reliable quality based on your connection; its live encoder guidance lists support up to 60 fps. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance
Match the frame rate to resolution, codec, and bitrate
The following are YouTube’s recommended live ingestion bitrates, in Mbps, as listed in its current encoder guidance reviewed in 2026. They are recommended encoder settings—not guaranteed internet connection requirements. Use the value for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating one number as universal.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps with H.264 and 12 Mbps for the same resolution and frame rate with AV1/H.265. These figures are encoder bitrate recommendations. Your connection must sustain the stream reliably, and a speed test alone does not establish that it will do so under live conditions. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations before configuring a stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up the live encoder correctly
YouTube’s Live Control Room needs the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. YouTube detects those settings and transcodes the live stream into output formats for viewers using different devices and networks. By default, YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. Encoder options listed in its guidance include RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Keyframe interval: Set a two-second keyframe frequency; YouTube lists four seconds as the maximum.
- Bitrate mode: Use CBR (constant bitrate).
- Resolution and frame rate: Use settings your encoder and connection can sustain; YouTube’s guidance says to choose reliable quality based on connection capacity.
For stream-management choices such as latency, consult YouTube’s live stream settings guidance. Frame rate and latency are separate decisions: lower latency can increase playback buffering, so do not change latency as a substitute for choosing a sustainable frame rate.

Test before the event and monitor stream health
- Run a speed test. Treat the result as a starting point, not proof that the live stream will remain stable.
- Make a test stream using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Include audio and movement similar to what viewers will see; a static test does not reveal how motion-heavy content behaves.
- Check stream health and messages in Live Control Room. If the stream is unstable, select a more reliable combination of resolution, frame rate, and bitrate and test it again.
YouTube’s guidance states, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” The test should reflect the actual event rather than only confirming that the encoder connects. See YouTube’s testing and encoder guidance.
Do not mix up live settings and uploaded-video settings
YouTube’s upload-encoding advice says to encode and upload footage at the frame rate at which it was recorded, and lists common upload rates of 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps. That advice is for uploaded videos, not a live encoder’s ingest settings. For a live stream, use YouTube’s live guidance: it lists a maximum of 60 fps and provides bitrate recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations
