You can loop prerecorded fireplace footage into a YouTube Live broadcast from a VPS with FFmpeg: enable live streaming on your channel, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then send a real-time loop to YouTube over RTMPS. The VPS keeps the encoder running without relying on your home computer, but you must plan for reconnects, monitor stream health, and keep a separate recording if you need an archive: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours, so request it ahead of your planned start.
- A VPS that can encode your chosen resolution and sustain the required outbound bandwidth. YouTube and FFmpeg documentation do not establish a universal CPU, memory, or network minimum; capacity depends on your source, encoding settings, and provider.
- A video file you have the rights to stream, including any music or other audio it contains.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS, plus the RTMPS server URL and stream key for your YouTube broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live eligibility requirements are documented in YouTube’s live streaming help. Keep the stream key private: do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or exposed log.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream and choose an encoder-based setup.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the exact values YouTube provides; the ingestion URL includes an endpoint and application path, and the key completes the destination.
- Keep the Live Control Room open for the preview and stream-health messages when you test and start the broadcast.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP, for encoder streaming. Follow the RTMPS URL and port 443 requirements in the YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide. Do not substitute a guessed server address or paste the key into a command that may be saved in a shared shell history.
Choose a video and encoding profile
For a mostly static fireplace scene, 720p30 or 1080p30 is a reasonable starting point, provided the VPS can encode it continuously and the network can sustain the selected bitrate. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together rather than treating any one number as universally suitable.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm that the selected codec is supported by your FFmpeg build and the ingest configuration.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table to select the bitrate for the codec and resolution you actually intend to send. Its published table can vary by localized or cached page results, so do not rely on an unverified figure copied elsewhere.
- Test at the intended resolution and bitrate, then check the preview, audio/video, and stream-health indicators before treating the setup as ready.
See YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations for the current settings table and testing guidance.

-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_HOST/YOUR_PATH/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative starting point, not a tested or universally compatible command. Replace the destination with the exact RTMPS server URL and stream-key path supplied in YouTube Studio. The example targets 30 fps and a two-second GOP: at 30 fps, -g 60 requests 60 frames between keyframes. Its bitrate is an example only; adjust it to the current YouTube recommendation for your chosen profile and to the VPS’s sustained capacity.
-stream_loop -1asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely.-rereads the file at its native playback rate instead of sending it as fast as the VPS can process it.-c:v libx264encodes video as H.264;-tune stillimageis intended for a largely static scene.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeset the example video rate-control values. They are not a substitute for matching YouTube’s current profile table.-c:a aacand the following audio options encode an AAC audio stream. If the visual is meant to be silent, omit audio options only after confirming the ingest profile behaves as intended.-f flvselects the output container used for this RTMP-family streaming workflow.
Check the installed FFmpeg options and consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation if the build or RTMPS connection behaves differently. Only stream footage and audio you are authorized to rebroadcast; a fireplace video found online is not automatically cleared for reuse.

Test and operate the VPS stream
- Start a test in the Live Control Room and confirm that YouTube receives the signal.
- Inspect the preview for the expected picture, frame rate, and audio behavior, then check stream-health messages for ingestion problems.
- Keep the FFmpeg process under observation during the test. Check its exit status and logs, VPS outbound connectivity, and available disk space if you are also retaining a local recording.
- For continuous operation, configure your VPS process management to handle encoder exits and reconnects, then deliberately test what happens after a network interruption or process restart. TCP keepalive can help detect dead peers, but it does not guarantee automatic recovery.
YouTube’s policy requires that you follow its Community Guidelines and have the necessary rights for everything in the stream, including music. Read YouTube’s live streaming restrictions before broadcasting. A long-running stream is not exempt from copyright or other policy enforcement.
Plan for archives and continuity
YouTube says streams under 12 hours may be archived automatically; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the replay matters, keep an independent local recording and do not treat the YouTube archive as your only copy. A single continuous stream also means you need to plan how you will recover if the encoder or connection fails; the cited YouTube guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 uptime.

Common VPS streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Incorrect RTMPS endpoint, application path, or key; stream not started as expected. | Copy the server URL and key again from the correct Live Control Room stream. Verify the destination format and port 443 requirements in YouTube’s RTMPS guide. |
| Preview is unstable or reports poor health | Bitrate, encoder load, or outbound capacity does not match the selected profile. | Check FFmpeg output and VPS CPU/network behavior. Compare the selected codec and resolution with YouTube’s current encoder table, then test at the intended settings. |
| FFmpeg exits or the stream disconnects | Process failure, VPS restart, or interruption in outbound connectivity. | Inspect the process exit status and logs, check connectivity, and test your VPS service configuration’s restart and reconnect behavior. |
| Archive is missing or incomplete | A continuous broadcast exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance, or an independent recording was not retained. | Keep a separate local recording when the archive is important; plan sessions and restarts around YouTube’s stated archive limit. |
| Audio is muted, claimed, or removed | The file may have no audio, incompatible audio settings, or music without the required rights. | Check the stream preview and encoder audio settings. Confirm you have rights to all audio before rebroadcasting. |
