To keep a YouTube playlist updated, add each new upload to it: open the video, choose More → Save, select the existing playlist, and confirm. YouTube’s documented workflow is manual; the Help pages reviewed do not describe a native setting that automatically adds every future upload to a separate playlist. For automation, an authorized app can use YouTube’s Data API, but that requires technical setup and permission.
Add a new video to a playlist manually
For an occasional update, use YouTube’s Save control. The steps may vary by context, and a made-for-kids video cannot be added to a playlist from the homepage; YouTube Help says desktop users can still add it from search results.
- Open the newly published video or Short.
- Choose More → Save (or Save to playlist, where shown).
- Select the existing playlist.
- Confirm the save.
- If viewers should see the updated playlist, check its visibility and ordering. You can edit a playlist and drag videos to reorder them.
Add your upload from YouTube Studio
Channel owners can place their own videos into selected playlists through YouTube Studio. On Android, the documented path is:
- Open YouTube Studio → Content.
- Tap Options beside the video, then Edit.
- Choose Add to playlist and select one or more playlists.
- Tap Done, then Save.
This is also a user-initiated action for each video, not an upload-triggered auto-add rule.

Can YouTube automatically add every new upload to a playlist?
The official Help instructions reviewed describe adding videos by hand; they do not document a native rule that automatically puts all future channel uploads into a separate playlist. If you want to keep a curated playlist current using YouTube’s documented controls, plan to add each new video yourself or assign that task to a collaborator.

Automate additions with the YouTube Data API
A developer can build an integration around the playlistItems.insert method. The request identifies the target playlist and video, and requires OAuth authorization. Google’s current API reference, checked October 3, 2026, states that each insert call costs 50 quota units. YouTube’s uploads list is itself a playlist, but the API reference says a video cannot be inserted into that uploads playlist.

This is an API building block, not a one-click YouTube setting or a verified off-the-shelf integration. Before relying on a third-party automation service, check that it currently supports the needed YouTube trigger and action, requests suitable authorization, and actually adds new uploads to the intended playlist.
When an official series playlist fits
YouTube describes a series playlist as an official set of videos that should be viewed together. It may feature or recommend other videos in the series when someone watches one. This can suit an episodic channel, but it does not automatically include later uploads. You need a verified account, each video can belong to only one series playlist, and the playlist may contain only videos you uploaded and have rights to use.
