You can stream prerecorded videos from a computer folder to YouTube Live by playing them through an encoder that sends a live feed to YouTube. YouTube Studio provides the stream connection details, but its documented workflow does not include a control that automatically broadcasts every file in an arbitrary folder. You must arrange playback in your chosen encoder or use a service designed to loop uploaded videos.
What you need to stream videos from a folder
YouTube Live receives a live video feed from an encoder. For a folder-based setup, the encoder workflow has two jobs: play the files in the order you want and send that output to YouTube. YouTube documents how to connect an encoder, but does not establish a universal folder queue or auto-play feature in Studio. Check that your chosen encoder supports the playback sequence or scheduling you need; do not assume that selecting a folder in YouTube Studio will make it play.
YouTube lists mobile, webcam and encoder as streaming methods; an encoder is the relevant route for prerecorded computer files. The steps below apply to creators in India as well as elsewhere, though specific encoder availability and setup vary by product and operating system. YouTube’s computer live-streaming guidance
Check your channel before planning the broadcast
- Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube Help: live-streaming requirements
- If you have never enabled live streaming, activate it in advance. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the planned broadcast time. YouTube Help
- Review the rights to every video and audio track you plan to broadcast. Streaming prerecorded material does not remove copyright obligations. YouTube may restrict a stream if it detects protected content; permission or an applicable license is essential.
Create the YouTube Live event and get its connection details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a new stream or open the scheduled event you intend to use. For the exact current Studio flow, follow YouTube’s encoder-stream setup instructions.
- In the event’s encoder settings, copy the stream URL (server URL) and stream key into the corresponding server and key fields in your encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not put it in a public document, share it in a screenshot, or include it in your video files. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Choose the event’s visibility and schedule deliberately. Use an unlisted or private test where appropriate before the public broadcast.
Configure playback and send the feed
- In your encoder, select the video files and arrange their playback order or schedule using that product’s documented controls. YouTube’s connection guidance does not specify a universal encoder interface, folder-watching option, or playback setting, so consult the encoder’s instructions for your operating system.
- Set the encoder’s output to the stream URL and stream key copied from the Live Control Room. Confirm that the selected source includes the audio you intend viewers to hear.
- Start the encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public event. Confirm picture, sound, aspect ratio and that playback begins at the intended file.
- Run a test before the actual broadcast, especially if you will leave it running unattended. Watch stream health and confirm the encoder advances between files as expected; a playlist or queue behavior is specific to the encoder, not guaranteed by YouTube.
Check upload capacity and archive behavior
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. The required connection therefore depends on your encoder’s configured bitrate and other network use; the 20% is headroom, not a universal bitrate target. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that rule for a longer broadcast: plan how you will preserve any source files or recording you need. YouTube encoder guidance
Optional hardware for scheduled playback without a computer
YouTube identifies the AJA HELO Plus as a specialized hardware option. Its optional PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media and send it directly to YouTube Live without a computer.
