Start with 1280×720 at 30 fps, using a compatible hardware H.264 encoder if the PC has one. If not, test x264 at the veryfast preset. For x264, OBS gives 3000–5000 kbps as a reference range for 720p30 low-to-medium-motion video; choose a bitrate your streaming service accepts and your connection can sustain. Treat this as a starting profile, not a guarantee: test the actual footage and stream path on the actual PC.
Recommended starting settings
OBS says there is no universal best preset: the right settings depend on the computer, encoder, scene, service and connection. Its system requirements also caution that compatible hardware does not guarantee streaming capability. Begin conservatively, then judge the picture and stability in a sustained test.

Nature footage may look calm overall, but moving leaves, flowing water, rain and clouds can contain fine detail or substantial motion. Use a test with the actual scene to decide whether the image holds up at the selected bitrate. A higher bitrate will not fix encoding overload or an unstable connection.
Choose an encoder that the old PC can sustain
Try an existing hardware encoder first
OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync among its supported hardware encoding options. Compatibility depends on the exact processor or graphics card, drivers, operating system and OBS build. OBS’s hardware encoder guidance lists GeForce 750 Ti / 900-series and newer for NVENC support, and Intel Core-i 2xxx-era integrated graphics for Quick Sync compatibility; those are compatibility references, not recommendations to buy hardware. Verify the specific machine rather than relying on a brand name. OBS recommends newer Quick Sync generations because earlier ones had lower quality.

Use x264 if hardware encoding is unavailable or unsuitable
x264 encodes on the CPU. OBS describes it as capable of stronger image quality per bitrate than hardware encoding in general, while hardware encoding can substantially reduce CPU load. On an older PC, spare CPU capacity may matter more than compression efficiency. Compare x264 and the available hardware encoder using the same scene and bitrate; neither is automatically best for every older computer.
Set up and test the stream in OBS
- Check the source and scene. Use the intended nature video and audio, and confirm that the media source is set to loop if the recording must repeat. Keep the scene simple: avoid unnecessary animated overlays and heavy filters.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use its results as a starting point, not a guarantee. OBS says the wizard evaluates the system and connection, and recommends testing before going live.
- Set output and frame rate. Start at 1280×720 and 30 fps. If the PC cannot encode smoothly, reduce resolution or frame rate before attempting higher-quality settings.
- Choose the encoder and rate control. Select a compatible hardware H.264 encoder or x264. For x264, begin at veryfast. Use CBR when expected by the streaming service, and choose a bitrate that fits both its current requirements and the connection’s stable upload capacity.
- Set audio bitrate. Begin around 160 kbps, or lower if upload capacity is constrained.
- Run a private, unlisted or otherwise safe test. Check the image, sound, OBS status and logs during a sustained run. A short preview alone does not establish that the setup is dependable for continuous streaming.
Fix encoding overload and dropped frames
First determine whether OBS is reporting encoding overload or network-related dropped frames; the remedies differ. Do not raise bitrate as a reflex.

- Encoding overload: Lower output resolution or frame rate. If using x264 and the load remains high, try a faster preset such as superfast. Simplify the scene and remove unnecessary filters or animated overlays.
- Network instability or dropped frames: Check whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate and whether that bitrate meets the service’s requirements. Reduce bitrate if the available stable upload capacity is insufficient. A faster encoder preset will not repair a weak connection.
- Hardware encoder looks poor: Compare it with x264 at the same scene and bitrate. Older hardware encoders may trade image quality for reduced CPU load.
- Considering NVENC Ultra High Quality: OBS 31.0 describes this tuning option as optimized for live-action artifacts such as camera sensor noise, while warning that it significantly reduces throughput. Do not assume it suits an old PC; test its load and stability before relying on it.
What changes when the stream must run 24/7
There is no special encoder preset that makes a computer reliable around the clock. Continuous streaming adds unattended recovery and long-run stability to the test. OBS’s overview documents an Automatic Reconnect control in Advanced settings and recommends preflight testing, but OBS does not certify a system for 24/7 operation or specify a test duration that proves reliability.
- Test the complete stream path and media loop for longer than a brief preview.
- Check the PC’s cooling and power settings independently.
- Test recovery by briefly interrupting the network under controlled conditions before depending on unattended operation.
- Use OBS logs and status to distinguish encoding problems from connection problems.
