For a conventional landscape YouTube live stream, use a 16:9 frame. Common HD sizes are 1920×1080 (1080p) and 1280×720 (720p). For a mobile-first vertical stream, use 9:16 and check how the picture is framed on a phone. Aspect ratio is the frame’s shape; resolution is its pixel dimensions. Choose them separately.
Which aspect ratio should you use?
| Format | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal 16:9 | Conventional landscape viewing on desktop, TV, and other wide screens | YouTube identifies 16:9 as its standard desktop aspect ratio. Common HD dimensions are 1920×1080 and 1280×720. |
| Vertical 9:16 | A mobile-first, full-screen live viewing experience | Eligible vertical live streams may be discoverable in the Shorts feed; not every stream qualifies for every feature. |
| Dual horizontal and vertical | Creators who want landscape and mobile-oriented versions of one live event | Set it up before going live, preview both compositions, and check the vertical framing. |
YouTube’s player adapts to different video aspect ratios, but 16:9 remains its standard desktop shape. See YouTube’s aspect-ratio guidance.
Choose a frame size that fits the production
Resolution describes the number of pixels in the frame, not its shape. A 1920×1080 image and a 1280×720 image are both 16:9; reducing from one to the other does not change the aspect ratio. Use the resolution your production and upload connection can sustain, rather than assuming the largest available frame is always best.
YouTube lists these 16:9 frame dimensions: 7680×4320 (4320p), 3840×2160 (2160p), 2560×1440 (1440p), 1920×1080 (1080p), 1280×720 (720p), 854×480 (480p), 640×360 (360p), and 426×240 (240p). For many HD streams, 1080p or 720p is a practical starting point. The platform’s resolution and aspect-ratio page documents the supported dimensions.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set bitrate and encoder settings separately
Aspect ratio, resolution, and bitrate are related production choices, but they are not interchangeable: the frame’s shape does not determine the bitrate. YouTube says its Live encoder workflow detects the encoder’s resolution and frame rate automatically by default. Unless you have a reason to set them manually, use that default and follow YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. For 720p, its recommendation is 8 Mbps at either 30 or 60 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guarantees about the quality each viewer will receive; recommendations differ by codec and frame rate.

How to stream in horizontal and vertical formats together
YouTube Live Control Room can create horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together. By default, the vertical version is a center crop of the horizontal stream. YouTube also lists fit-to-phone-width and stacked layout options, and lets you adjust zoom and position. Because a center crop can remove content near the sides, inspect the vertical preview and keep essential subjects, text, and overlays within its visible area.

- Before starting the stream, configure dual format in YouTube Live Control Room. You cannot add the vertical version after the stream has started.
- Choose the vertical layout, then preview and adjust its crop or position. Check that important content remains visible on a phone-sized frame.
- If using a third-party encoder, select the encoder option, use RTMP or RTMPS, and configure a second stream key for the vertical output. Send each matching orientation to its corresponding key; this separate-key workflow is for encoder setups, not a requirement for every Live Control Room stream.
- Check both previews and stream health before and during the event. With dual streaming, YouTube says viewers in the Shorts feed see the vertical version while other viewers see the horizontal version.
YouTube describes vertical live viewing as a full-screen mobile experience with a scrollable live-stream feed. Discovery in the Shorts feed and fan-funding features depend on eligibility. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance for current availability and setup details.
Preflight checklist
- Choose horizontal, vertical, or dual format based on the intended viewing experience.
- For dual format, inspect the vertical crop and move essential content into the visible area.
- If using an encoder with separate outputs, match each orientation to its intended stream key.
- Use automatic resolution and frame-rate detection unless you need manual settings.
- Confirm upload capacity, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Test representative motion and audio, check the Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health while live.
For an encoder workflow, YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing and connection preparation.
