YouTube can create multiple playback resolutions from one incoming live stream, so viewers on different devices and connections can choose an available quality. That is different from changing the encoder’s outgoing resolution as a playlist moves from one video to another: YouTube documents automatic transcoding and input-resolution detection, but does not establish that file-by-file resolution changes are supported or seamless. For a steady loop, send one consistent resolution and frame rate, then test the stream before making it public.
What “different resolutions” can mean
Different playback options for viewers
YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live encoder feed into multiple output formats, allowing viewers on different devices and networks to watch at a suitable quality. Your encoder therefore does not need to send a separate feed for every viewer resolution. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance describes this behavior.
Changing the encoder output between files
The encoder sends an incoming resolution and frame rate. YouTube detects these by default in Live Control Room; creators who need to set them manually can create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. YouTube’s documentation does not say that an encoder should change its output resolution each time a loop reaches a file with different dimensions. Treat that as an unestablished workflow, not a guaranteed feature.
How to loop videos at a stable output resolution in OBS
- Choose how to play the source. In OBS, add a Media Source for one file and enable its loop option, or add a VLC Video source for a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. OBS notes that the VLC source requires VLC to be installed. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Set one output format for the broadcast. Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the source material and your connection, and keep them stable throughout the loop. This is practical guidance based on YouTube’s documented single incoming encoder feed and automatic transcoding; it is not a stated YouTube requirement.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, then enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key in OBS’s stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection workflow. Keep the stream key private.
- Leave resolution detection on automatic unless you need manual control. If you do need to choose it manually, YouTube directs creators to use a custom stream key and turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. Use the current live stream settings guide for the applicable controls.
- Choose an appropriate bitrate. Match the bitrate to the output resolution, frame rate, codec and available upload capacity. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for the incoming encoder feed, not guarantees about a viewer’s playback quality. Other resolutions and codecs have separate ranges in YouTube’s full settings table.
- Test before going public. Run the playlist privately or unlisted with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast. Check transitions, black bars or cropping when files have different dimensions, audio continuity, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; the specific visual checks are useful production checks for mixed-resolution playlists.
What happens when the playlist mixes resolutions?
The source files can have different dimensions while OBS sends a single configured output format. How each file fits that frame depends on the source and OBS layout; inspect the result rather than assuming that the change will be seamless. Look for letterboxing, cropping, unexpected scaling, blank frames, audio gaps and transitions that interrupt the loop. YouTube’s automatic transcoding gives viewers playback options from the incoming feed, but it does not promise a seamless switch in the encoder’s input format between playlist items.

Local OBS or cloud playlist playout?
With OBS, your computer runs the playout and encoder, and the local connection must remain available for the stream to continue. A cloud playlist service can instead run prerecorded playout remotely. Streamloop describes that use case on its service site; check its current features, limits and availability directly before relying on it. Neither approach removes the need to confirm that your content is suitable for YouTube and that the stream is healthy.

Troubleshooting a loop stream
- Viewers do not see the quality options you expected: remember that viewer renditions are generated from the incoming feed. Check the selected encoder output and YouTube’s stream-health status, then allow for device and network differences.
- A playlist item looks cropped or has black bars: compare its dimensions with the OBS canvas and output format, adjust the source’s fit or layout, and test the transition again before going public.
- The playlist stops at the end: confirm that Media Source looping or VLC Video’s Loop Playlist option is enabled. For the VLC source, confirm VLC is installed.
- The stream is unstable or reports health problems: verify that the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate, lower the output demands if necessary, and monitor YouTube’s health indicators during a test. YouTube advises prioritizing a reliable stream over a higher-quality setting the connection cannot sustain.
- OBS does not connect to YouTube: check that the stream URL and key were entered correctly in the encoder and that you are using the intended live stream in Live Control Room. Do not share the key publicly.
Copyright and suitability still matter for looped content
Looping a video does not grant permission to broadcast its music, footage or other protected material. Use content you created, licensed or otherwise have the right to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and monetization policies before scheduling a continuous broadcast. A technically healthy stream does not establish that the content qualifies for monetization.
