How to Stream a Local Video File to YouTube Live with FFmpeg

Use FFmpeg to send a local video file to a YouTube Live event: copy the event’s RTMPS URL and stream key, configure a suitable profile, then verify the preview and stream health.

To stream a local video file to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, create or open a YouTube live event, copy its server URL and stream key, then send FFmpeg a real-time H.264/AAC output over RTMPS. Match the output bitrate and keyframe interval to the video profile and your upload connection, then verify the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio.

Before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; users must be at least 16 to live stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • FFmpeg installed with the encoder and protocol support you intend to use. The example below uses libx264, AAC, and FLV output.
  • The local video file and a stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected output bitrate.

YouTube’s live workflow and eligibility details can change. Check your channel and the current controls in YouTube Studio before an event.

1. Create a YouTube event and copy its destination

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s live-stream workflow and create a live event, or select the event you plan to use.
  2. Copy the event’s server URL and stream key from its encoder settings. Use the RTMPS destination when available. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the server URL and key into the encoder; its API documentation describes the ingestion address and stream name as separate fields. Use the values displayed for your event rather than guessing a generic address. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials. Do not publish them in tutorials, screenshots, shared commands, or logs. If exposed, reset the key in YouTube Studio and update FFmpeg. See Manage live stream settings.

2. Inspect the file and choose a profile

Check the file’s resolution, frame rate, and audio track before choosing output settings. A file without an audio stream can be sent without audio, but if viewers should hear sound, confirm the intended track is present and mapped. Keep the output profile within the source’s capabilities and your network’s reliable upload capacity; an unnecessarily high bitrate can make delivery unstable.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 frames per second. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (not over four seconds), square pixels, progressive scan, 44.1 kHz stereo audio, 128 kbps stereo audio, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Use YouTube’s bitrate row for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually select, rather than treating one bitrate as universal. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

H.264 output profile YouTube ingestion guidance Practical note
720p30 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended Allow sustained upload headroom above the chosen output bitrate.
1080p30 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will be stable.

The figures above are YouTube’s current H.264 encoder guidance checked in 2026; consult its settings page for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs. YouTube can detect resolution and frame rate automatically by default; manual settings are available through custom stream-key configuration.

ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
  -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "rtmps://<YouTube-ingestion-host>/<app>/<STREAM_KEY>"

This is a starting example, not a tested or guaranteed-compatible command. Its 5,000 kbps video target is not universal; choose the recommended bitrate for your intended output profile and connection. The -g 60 GOP setting represents two seconds only at 30 fps. At another frame rate, set the GOP to approximately two seconds of frames. The command assumes an audio track; if the input has none, remove the audio options or explicitly map streams appropriate to your file. FFmpeg’s documentation explains real-time input and FLV output, and YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS while recommending RTMPS. See FFmpeg documentation.

For an input that may contain multiple video or audio tracks, inspect it and adjust stream mapping rather than assuming the first stream is the one you want. FFmpeg build options, source codecs, frame rate, key format, and endpoint mode can all affect compatibility. Do not run a real key in a shared session: command-line arguments may be visible to local users or tools, and shell history or logs can retain them.

4. Preview, monitor, and stop the stream

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test event if appropriate.
  2. Confirm that YouTube Studio receives the feed and inspect the preview, stream-health messages, audio, and motion. Test with representative sound and movement; monitor quality during the stream as YouTube recommends.
  3. When finished, stop the event in YouTube Studio and stop FFmpeg. Do not assume ending local file input completes every event action on YouTube.

For live controls and testing recommendations, see YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and YouTube’s live-streaming help.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Checks and fixes
YouTube receives no stream Confirm channel eligibility and that the event is ready to receive a feed. Recheck the event’s exact server URL and key, RTMPS destination, FFmpeg protocol/encoder support, and whether the command is reading the intended file.
FFmpeg reports an encoder or protocol error Check that your FFmpeg build includes libx264 and the required protocol support. If you use a different encoder or output mode, verify that it is supported by both your build and YouTube’s current ingestion guidance.
Video appears, but audio is missing Check that the file contains an audio stream and that FFmpeg is selecting it. If the file intentionally has no audio, remove the audio options rather than expecting an audio track to appear.
Preview quality is poor or delivery is unstable Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a profile your connection can sustain. Check YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that exact profile and test again.
The key may have been exposed Reset the stream key in YouTube Studio, replace it in your local command or configuration, and remove or redact exposed copies where possible.
