If a continuous FFmpeg stream is filling your VPS disk, check every output and log destination in the FFmpeg command and its service wrapper. Sending video to YouTube does not require saving a local copy: remove unintended recording or segment outputs, and disable file-based reports or redirection you do not need. If you intentionally generate local HLS files, configure and verify segment retention for your installed FFmpeg build.
Why a YouTube stream can still fill VPS storage
The network output to YouTube and local files are separate outputs. A command can send a live feed over the network while also writing a recording, HLS/DASH playlist and segments, or an FFmpeg report to disk. The FFmpeg command-line documentation explains that options apply to the next specified input or output, so inspect the complete command and the position of each option rather than assuming one flag controls everything: FFmpeg command-line documentation.
- Recording output: look for a local filename or path in addition to the YouTube network destination.
- Segmented output: HLS or DASH may create playlists and many media segments in a directory. FFmpeg describes HLS playlists and related muxer options in its formats documentation.
- Report or redirected logs: FFmpeg’s
FFREPORTsetting can write a report file. A service wrapper may also redirect output to a file.
Disk use can also come from operating-system or service logs and temporary files, independently of FFmpeg’s media outputs. The right cleanup depends on the VPS operating system and service setup; do not remove files or add a generic cleanup job before identifying what is consuming space.
Find what is writing to disk
- Inspect the running FFmpeg command. Check the command used by the service, not just a shell command you may have run manually. Identify every output destination: network URLs, recording filenames, and HLS/DASH paths.
- Check the service wrapper and working directory. Look for output redirection and relative file paths, which may write into the service’s working directory rather than the directory you expect.
- Check report and log settings. Look for
FFREPORTand any explicit file-based logging or redirection. Keep the logs you need for diagnosis, but direct or rotate them deliberately rather than letting an unintended file grow indefinitely. - Measure the actual growth. Compare disk use and file sizes over time, then match growing files to the destinations found above. This helps distinguish media segments from logs or unrelated system files.
FFmpeg’s general rule is that options apply to the next specified file. Review option placement as well as the output list; an option placed before one output may not affect another output later in the command.

Stream directly to YouTube when you do not need a local archive
For a live feed with no local recording requirement, keep the YouTube ingestion URL as the output and remove the additional local recording or segment output. Preserve the input, codec, mapping, reconnect behavior, service supervision, and other settings your actual workflow requires. Those details depend on the source media, FFmpeg build, YouTube protocol, and VPS service configuration, so there is no safe universal command to substitute without seeing them.
YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS as continuous-streaming ingestion options. Its encoder guidance covers the settings relevant to the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; choose settings that your VPS’s available upload capacity can sustain. Bitrate is an encoding and delivery setting, not a disk-retention cap: it does not stop a recording or an unbounded segment directory from growing. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

If you need local HLS files, bound and verify their retention
Local HLS output creates a playlist and segment files. If you need those files, configure a rolling playlist and the relevant segment-deletion behavior using options supported by your installed FFmpeg HLS muxer. A rolling playlist by itself should not be treated as proof that files outside the visible window are removed: verify the actual files and disk use with your FFmpeg version.
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide requires MPEG-TS segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. That is a YouTube ingestion requirement, not a general guarantee that every local FFmpeg output directory will be cleaned. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s HLS setup guide and the options in the FFmpeg formats documentation.

- Confirm that HLS is required for your YouTube ingestion or local workflow.
- Set the playlist window and segment cleanup behavior deliberately, using options available in your installed FFmpeg build.
- Run a test long enough to create and retire segments, then verify that old files are actually deleted and the directory remains bounded.
- Check that the resulting HLS output meets YouTube’s segment and rolling-playlist requirements if it is also being sent to YouTube.
Check documentation and test before going live
FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly; the project recommends consulting documentation installed alongside FFmpeg when using an older version. Compare the available HLS options with the VPS’s actual build rather than copying an option from documentation for a different version: FFmpeg documentation guidance.
Before a long session, run a test stream using audio and motion similar to the intended content, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before starting a live stream. Keep your stream key out of public commands, logs, and examples. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Troubleshooting disk growth
| What you observe | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| A large video file grows while the YouTube stream is live | A local recording output is running alongside the network output. | Inspect all FFmpeg outputs and remove the recording destination if no archive is needed. |
| A directory accumulates many small media files | HLS/DASH segments are being written locally, possibly without effective deletion. | Check the muxer configuration and installed FFmpeg options; test whether segments outside the intended retention window are removed. |
| A report or text log grows over time | FFmpeg report output or service-level redirection is writing to a file. | Check FFREPORT, the service definition, and the working directory. Retain useful logs with deliberate rotation or destination settings. |
| Disk use rises, but no FFmpeg media output explains it | Operating-system logs, service logs, or temporary files may be responsible. | Identify the growing files before deleting anything. Cleanup steps vary by distribution and service configuration. |
| Old HLS files remain after they leave the playlist | The playlist window may be bounded without effective local segment deletion, or the installed muxer behaves differently from the expected configuration. | Consult documentation for the installed build and verify segment deletion during a test run. |
