First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
What “turn on live streaming” means
The title often leads creators to look for an enable switch in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s mobile create-and-go-live instructions instead point to the regular YouTube app. Studio is used to manage live streams and some controls, but it is not the app named for creating a mobile broadcast in YouTube’s instructions. There are two things to check: whether your channel is eligible to stream, and whether mobile live streaming is available for your channel and device.
Check channel and device eligibility
- Age: You must be at least 16 years old to live stream under YouTube’s general requirements.
- Channel verification: Your channel must be verified.
- Recent restrictions: Your channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- Mobile subscriber threshold: Mobile live streaming requires at least 50 subscribers.
- Device software: YouTube’s current mobile help page specifies Android 8.0 or later, or iOS 8 or later.
These are eligibility requirements, not settings that can be bypassed by switching apps or buying equipment. YouTube notes that first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours; that is a possible wait, not a promise that every channel becomes eligible after exactly 24 hours. Start a mobile live stream in the YouTube app
- On your eligible phone or tablet, open the YouTube app.
- Tap Create, then tap Live.
- Enter the stream details. Choose the visibility and audience settings that fit your broadcast. The app also offers scheduling and a screencast option.
- When you are ready to broadcast, tap Go live.
- When finished, tap Finish. YouTube creates an archive on your channel; you can later change the archive’s privacy or delete it.
For a first attempt, YouTube recommends testing your setup before the stream that matters. Its live-streaming tips say, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” YouTube live streaming tips
Choose a streaming method for a gaming broadcast
The right method depends on where the game is running and how much production control you need. YouTube identifies mobile, webcam, encoder and console streaming as options. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming

For a game stream with overlays or external capture equipment, an encoder is typically the more suitable category than a phone broadcast. The mobile activation steps above do not configure an encoder or console stream.
If “Live” is missing or you can’t start
- “Live” is unavailable: Confirm channel verification, at least 50 subscribers for mobile streaming, no live-streaming restriction in the last 90 days, and that live streaming has been activated. If you just enabled it, allow for YouTube’s stated possible wait of up to 24 hours.
- The device may not qualify: Check that it runs Android 8.0 or later, or iOS 8 or later, as specified by YouTube’s current mobile help page.
- You are checking Studio for a mobile creation switch: Use the YouTube app’s Create → Live workflow instead; YouTube’s published mobile creation steps do not direct you to a Studio-app toggle.
- You are below the mobile threshold: The 50-subscriber minimum applies to mobile live streaming. The mobile help page does not say that changing apps or adding equipment removes this requirement.
If your channel meets the listed requirements and the option still does not appear after the activation wait, consult YouTube’s live-streaming help pages for account-specific guidance. Reinstalling the app, buying equipment, or moving to Studio is not identified by YouTube as a workaround for eligibility restrictions.
