How to Keep an OBS YouTube Stream Running After a Windows Restart

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To have OBS resume streaming after Windows restarts, make Windows launch OBS and pass it the --startstreaming parameter. Also enable OBS automatic reconnect: launching the program and reconnecting its stream are separate recovery steps. Neither setting guarantees a seamless return, so test the whole path on your PC, including YouTube’s Live Control Room settings.

What needs to recover after a restart

A restart interrupts both OBS and its connection to YouTube. You need Windows to open OBS, OBS to begin sending the configured feed, and YouTube to accept and publish that feed. A successful OBS launch alone does not confirm that viewers can watch the stream.

Before automating anything, save and verify your OBS profile, scenes, service selection, stream key, and output settings. OBS treats service and key configuration separately from automatic reconnect; see the OBS Studio overview.

Prepare the YouTube stream and OBS

  1. Confirm the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Check that you have selected the intended stream and that its settings and stream key are current. A stream key is a credential used by the encoder to send a feed to YouTube; keep it private. YouTube explains stream settings in Manage live stream settings.
  2. Check OBS’s streaming configuration. In OBS, confirm the intended streaming service, stream key, profile, scenes, and output settings. If YouTube has issued a replacement key, update OBS before testing.
  3. Enable automatic reconnect in OBS. Configure the reconnect options in OBS’s streaming settings so OBS can retry after a dropped connection. This helps with a lost connection while OBS remains open; it does not launch OBS if Windows has closed it.

Choose how Windows should launch OBS

Method Best fit Trade-off
Startup-folder shortcut Simple setup that starts OBS when the user signs in. It runs in that user’s sign-in context; it offers less trigger and timing control than Task Scheduler.
Task Scheduler More control over the trigger and launch configuration. Requires the correct executable path, launch argument, and working directory.

Option 1: Startup-folder shortcut

  1. Find the OBS executable, usually named obs64.exe, in the OBS installation folder.
  2. Create a shortcut to the executable and open the shortcut’s properties.
  3. In the Target field, preserve the executable path and add a space followed by --startstreaming after the closing quotation mark. For example: "C:PathToobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Replace the example path with the actual path on your PC.
  4. Open the current Windows user’s Startup folder by pressing Win+R, entering shell:startup, and pressing Enter. Place the shortcut there.
  5. Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, then verify that OBS opens and attempts to stream.

This route starts OBS when the user signs in. It is not the same as starting a Windows service or proving OBS will run before sign-in.

Option 2: Task Scheduler

  1. Open Windows Task Scheduler and choose Create Task (rather than relying on a basic shortcut if you need to set the working directory).
  2. On the General tab, give the task a recognizable name. Choose the security and sign-in behavior appropriate to your setup; test that OBS can access the required profile and configuration under that account.
  3. On Triggers, add the event that should start OBS, such as At log on. The exact trigger you choose determines whether OBS waits for a user sign-in.
  4. On Actions, choose Start a program. Set Program/script to the full path to obs64.exe. Put --startstreaming in Add arguments.
  5. Set Start in (optional) to the folder containing obs64.exe, without adding the executable name. OBS explicitly requires this working directory for scheduled-task or other automated launches; see its launch-parameter documentation.
  6. Save the task and run it manually once. Confirm that OBS opens with the expected profile and starts the intended stream before depending on the trigger.

Check YouTube’s start and publishing behavior

YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls affect whether an encoder can start or stop a stream. Check the controls for the specific stream in Live Control Room rather than assuming the setting is the same for every event. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder instructions say to wait for the preview and click Go live. That additional action may mean an OBS launch by itself will not publish a scheduled event.

If you are enabling YouTube live streaming for the first time, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Its encoder guide also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. These are YouTube service details, not guarantees about OBS recovery.

Test the full restart path

  1. First follow OBS’s Quick Start guide and verify your normal stream settings.
  2. With an appropriate test stream, restart Windows and observe whether the chosen trigger launches OBS, whether the correct profile loads, and whether OBS begins sending video.
  3. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health, then verify the stream is accessible from the channel or watch page. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing and checking these signals.
  4. When practical, test the interruption you care about, such as a restart or temporary network loss. Confirm what happens to the event and viewer-facing stream; behavior can differ by Windows, network, and stream configuration.

Common problems and fixes

  • OBS opens but does not start streaming: Check that --startstreaming is placed after the executable path, and that the task or shortcut launches the OBS installation you configured. Run the task manually and inspect OBS’s loaded profile and stream settings.
  • Task Scheduler launches OBS inconsistently: Verify the executable path and the Start in directory. OBS’s launch-parameter guidance specifies that the working directory must point to the folder containing obs64.exe.
  • OBS starts before the internet is ready: A PC or router may still be reconnecting when OBS makes its first attempt. An OBS community discussion notes this as a possible failure mode, not a universal timing rule. Adjust startup timing or use a retry approach suited to your system, then test it; no delay value is established as reliable for every setup. See the OBS forum discussion.
  • YouTube does not accept the encoder feed: Check the selected stream and key in Live Control Room. If the key has changed, update OBS. YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance covers encoder connection problems.
  • The feed reaches YouTube but viewers do not see the event: Check the Live Control Room preview and whether the stream requires a separate Go live action, particularly for a scheduled stream.
  • Video is unstable or poor quality: Review OBS output settings and the available outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises checking encoder output and connection conditions; do not assume that the startup automation itself fixes stream health.

Power loss and practical limits

A UPS can keep a PC and modem/router powered through a short outage if its capacity and runtime suit the connected load. It does not start OBS, restore an internet connection, or guarantee that the broadcast resumes. A full power loss followed by Windows boot still depends on the startup trigger, network readiness, OBS configuration, and YouTube’s stream controls.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube without leaving a Windows PC running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
