A running FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Start by comparing YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health messages with FFmpeg’s output; then check the media source, encoder load, outbound bandwidth, and network path. The title alone does not show that Chennai routing is at fault.
1. Check what YouTube is receiving
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and note the stream-health indicator and the timestamp and wording of every message. The dashboard checks the stream sent to YouTube and displays errors beside the health indicator. YouTube says: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” (YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.)
Use the displayed error to choose the next check rather than inferring success from FFmpeg’s process state. YouTube describes red errors as critical: they may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems. Yellow errors can degrade quality. Consult the wording in YouTube’s live streaming error messages and match it to the selected stream configuration.
2. Separate an encoder problem from a connection problem
Compare FFmpeg’s output with what the stream should contain. If you have an encoder preview or a local recording, check whether it continues to show and sound correct. Inspect FFmpeg’s stderr around the stall and check CPU load. If a local archive is configured, confirm it is still being written and growing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Encoder output or local recording is also faulty: investigate the source media, encoder errors, and CPU load first.
- Encoder output looks healthy but YouTube reports trouble: test the VPS’s outbound connection and sustained upload capacity. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance makes this encoder-versus-connection distinction.
Keep the exact FFmpeg command, stderr, and FFmpeg build/version for the incident review. The available platform guidance does not identify a particular FFmpeg log line or command option that diagnoses this symptom on its own.
3. Check bandwidth and stream settings
Measure upload capacity from the VPS; download speed is not a substitute. Compare the configured total stream bitrate with sustained outbound capacity at the time the stall occurs. YouTube says the total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Count primary and backup streams in the total. If the problem is intermittent, repeat measurements during normal operation and during a stall, and compare them with provider bandwidth graphs if available. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Then compare the actual stream configuration with the settings shown for your selected protocol, codec, resolution, and stream key in Live Control Room. YouTube’s guidance lists errors involving unsupported formats, bitrate, audio/video stream counts, resolution, and keyframe frequency. For the listed RTMP/RTMPS recommendations, YouTube advises a keyframe every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart. Its H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps is 10 Mbps. These are configuration recommendations, not measurements of your VPS or evidence about the cause of a particular stall; YouTube’s pages do not state a publication year for these figures. Check the current requirements on YouTube’s encoder settings page.
4. Test the route without overreading traceroute
If the encoder and bandwidth checks look sound, collect timestamped connectivity and route measurements from the VPS toward the configured YouTube ingest destination, where that destination is available. Compare repeated results during normal operation and during the stall.

Traceroute uses TTL-limited probes to prompt hop responses. A missing intermediate response does not by itself prove that stream packets are being dropped: firewalls may filter probes, and routers may rate-limit ICMP replies. TCP-based tracing can help when UDP or ICMP probes are filtered, but use a suitable destination and port. The traceroute(8) manual explains these limitations.
The symptom does not establish a Chennai-specific routing fault. No provider, ingest hostname, route trace, error message, FFmpeg command, or time series is specified, and the available YouTube guidance provides no Chennai-specific failure statistics. Consider asking the VPS host to investigate its outbound path only when repeated measurements support that suspicion.

5. Build a useful incident record
Capture evidence from the same time window so YouTube’s messages can be compared with the server’s behavior. This bundle is a practical diagnostic aid, not a prescribed YouTube incident form.
- Live Control Room health messages and their timestamps.
- FFmpeg stderr around the same time, plus the exact command and FFmpeg build/version.
- CPU load and repeated VPS upload measurements; include provider bandwidth graphs if available.
- Whether a preview or local archive remains healthy.
- Timestamped route traces, noting the destination and probe method.
6. Change protocol only when the evidence points there
Do not switch protocols just because the player stalls. YouTube describes HLS as segment-based and higher-latency than RTMP, with separate requirements such as HTTPS, TS segments, and a rolling playlist. Change only when your encoder and YouTube stream key are configured for the selected protocol and the observed error supports it. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream, rather than diagnose this VPS incident, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
