1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA full VPS disk can stop a 24/7 YouTube stream when the encoder or another service can no longer write required data. Don’t assume logs are the culprit: first identify which filesystem is full and what is using its space, then compare local service logs with YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped health messages. Recover space safely before restarting the stream, and verify that YouTube is receiving it again.
Why did my 24/7 YouTube stream stop when my VPS disk filled?
A full filesystem can prevent an encoder or its supporting services from writing files, which may cause the local streaming process to fail or become unreliable. But a full-disk symptom does not identify the cause: the space could be occupied by journal logs, media, an application log, or other data. Nor does it prove that disk exhaustion is the only reason YouTube stopped receiving the stream.
Use two independent views of the incident. Check the VPS to establish filesystem capacity, the process state, and local errors. Check YouTube Live Control Room to see the health and errors of the stream being sent to YouTube. YouTube says, “The Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check for errors in the stream that you’re sending to YouTube.” YouTube Help’s live streaming error messages can include timestamps and error-specific guidance.
How do I find what filled the disk on Linux?
- Check capacity and identify the affected mount. Use the disk-capacity and filesystem-usage tools appropriate to your Linux distribution. Establish which mounted filesystem is full; a large directory on a different mount may not be relevant.
- Locate large consumers on that filesystem. Inspect directories and files before deleting anything. Confirm what owns the data and whether the application needs it. The cause is specific to your host; do not assume that a directory under
/var, media files, or logs can safely be removed. - Record useful evidence. Note the time the stream failed and collect relevant service errors before cleanup where feasible. Logs can be important for diagnosing the cause, so avoid routinely purging them.
- Check the streaming service. If it runs as a systemd unit, inspect that unit’s state and recent logs. The unit name and encoder vary by deployment; do not assume every VPS uses FFmpeg or OBS.
- Compare the timeline with YouTube. Open Live Control Room and match its stream-health messages and timestamps against local service logs and the disk symptoms. A platform-side ingest or connection error may need a different fix from a host storage failure.
How do I clear systemd journal logs safely?
First confirm that the systemd journal is a meaningful disk consumer. The systemd 255 journalctl manual documents commands for measuring journal usage, inspecting a unit’s logs, rotating journal files, and vacuuming archived data.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
journalctl --disk-usagereports the disk space used by journal files.journalctl -u your-unit-nameshows logs for the named unit. Replace the example with the actual systemd unit name.journalctl -u your-unit-name -ffollows new log entries for that unit while you observe a restart or recovery attempt.journalctl --rotaterotates active journal files.journalctl --vacuum-size=LIMITremoves the oldest archived journal files to try to bring journal use toward the specified limit. Choose a limit for your disk and diagnostic needs rather than treating one value as universally safe.
Rotation followed by vacuuming can make older data eligible for removal, but vacuuming removes archived files only. Active files remain, so the total may not reach the requested size exactly. If media, a growing application log outside journald, or another service’s data filled the filesystem, journal cleanup will not fix the actual cause. Preserve the failure messages you need, and verify capacity again after any cleanup.
What should I check before restarting the stream?
Restore usable headroom on the affected filesystem first. Removing a few journal files will not help if the actual consumer remains in place, and restarting a process without resolving its write failure may simply reproduce the problem.

- Confirm that the filesystem has usable free space and that the identified cause has been addressed or contained.
- Check the named streaming unit’s current state and recent logs. Look for continuing write failures, encoder errors, or connection errors.
- If the service is stopped and the disk is healthy, perform a deliberate restart using the method appropriate to that deployment. The exact unit name and encoder command are host-specific.
- Follow the local service logs during recovery and compare their timestamps with the YouTube Live Control Room health indicator.
A local process that is running is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. YouTube’s Live Control Room metrics guidance describes real-time stream metrics, including duration and viewer figures. Use the platform’s status and health information to confirm what it sees, while using the VPS logs to confirm what the host is doing. Whether an interruption resumes the same live event or affects its recording depends on the event configuration and the state shown in the dashboard; do not assume continuity.
Which troubleshooting branch fits the evidence?
| What you observe | What to investigate | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The relevant filesystem is full and local logs show write or no-space failures. | Host storage exhaustion. The full disk does not by itself reveal which files caused it. | Identify the consumer, reclaim space safely, confirm headroom, then inspect and recover the service. |
| Journal usage is unusually large. | systemd journal retention and archived files. | Measure usage, preserve useful logs, and consider rotation and vacuuming of archived files; then set suitable limits. |
| The disk has headroom, but YouTube reports stream or connection errors. | Ingest connection, network stability, or encoder configuration. | Follow the timestamped YouTube error guidance. If using OBS, its connection troubleshooting guidance says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections are commonly related to an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. |
| The local service is stopped, but the filesystem now has headroom. | Process recovery, while checking for remaining encoder or connection errors. | Inspect unit state and logs, then restart deliberately if appropriate. A restart policy can help with a process crash, not with storage exhaustion itself. |
How can I prevent another full-disk interruption?
Set journal limits for the actual VPS layout
If journal growth caused the incident, review journald’s persistent and runtime storage configuration. The systemd 252 journald.conf manual documents SystemMaxUse= and SystemKeepFree= for persistent logs, as well as corresponding runtime controls. Check the installed systemd version and where the journal is stored before choosing values. Documented defaults depend on filesystem size and have caps; they are not a sizing recommendation for every VPS.

Journald reduces its footprint by deleting archived journal files. Limits do not remove unrelated files, and changing the configuration does not automatically clear existing non-journal data. Recheck journal usage and filesystem headroom after configuring retention.
Monitor capacity and supervise the process separately
Configure disk-capacity monitoring and alerts for the VPS environment so an operator can investigate before the relevant filesystem is exhausted. Separately, systemd’s restart policy can help recover a process that exits. A public Ubuntu VPS FFmpeg/systemd setup example uses Restart=always; it is an example, not a guarantee or universal prescription. A restart policy cannot create disk space or fix broken inputs, invalid stream credentials, or a YouTube-side error.

Reassess capacity if growth is persistent
If the workload’s legitimate data and logs repeatedly exceed the VPS filesystem’s capacity, investigate expanding the virtual disk or choosing a VPS configuration with more storage. Confirm the provider’s expansion process and filesystem requirements for your own instance; a virtual disk is not enlarged by attaching an arbitrary consumer drive.

If your goal is a YouTube channel playing uploaded videos 24/7, StreamNeo is a different approach from repairing an existing VPS encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud service loops the uploaded video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not stream from a camera or resolve a full disk on your VPS.
