The right choice depends first on whether the VPS only relays an already encoded stream or must encode the rain video itself. Compare the VPS’s actual data-center location, outbound-transfer allowance, CPU and RAM, and monthly cost; then test the exact workload before relying on it.
Decide whether the VPS will relay or encode the stream
Relay an already encoded stream
A relay forwards a stream that another device or service has already encoded. It avoids doing the video encoding on the VPS, but still uses continuous outbound bandwidth. Confirm that your chosen relay setup is supported by the VPS provider and YouTube ingest settings.
Encode the rain video on the VPS
If FFmpeg or another encoder runs on the VPS, the instance must sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate continuously. Entry-level plan specifications alone do not establish that an instance can do this. Treat any candidate as unproven until you test the actual source and settings for a representative period and monitor CPU, memory, dropped frames, and YouTube stream health.
Set a modest YouTube bitrate before choosing a plan
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 video at 3 Mbps for 720p/30 fps and 5 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps. These are recommended ingest settings, not guarantees of how attractive a particular rain scene will look; test the footage and monitor the result. YouTube also recommends 20% bandwidth headroom because a disrupted connection can break a stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.
#1 Best Overall
For an always-on stream, bitrate becomes a large recurring transfer requirement. At 3 Mbps, the stream sends roughly 32 GB per day before overhead; at 5 Mbps, roughly 54 GB per day. Those estimates use decimal gigabytes and assume a constant video bitrate for 24 hours. Audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and provider accounting can change the actual total, so leave margin and check how the host measures transfer.
Use compatible encoder settings
- Protocol: YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest.
- Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends.
- Video: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported codecs; the bitrate figures above are specifically H.264 recommendations.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC and MP3.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
These settings come from YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Protect your stream key: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Create or manage it in YouTube Studio’s live control room, and replace it if it is exposed.

Shortlist: compare actual India-region plans, not headline claims
These are candidates to investigate, not a performance ranking. The provider material establishes product and plan details, but not sustained encoding performance or guaranteed uptime for this workload.
| Candidate | What the published information establishes | What to confirm before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Lightsail, Mumbai | AWS describes Lightsail as a VPS and lists general Linux bundles. Its general page lists a $5/month plan with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer, and a $12/month plan with 2 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 60 GB SSD, and 3 TB transfer. AWS says Mumbai plans include half the transfer allowance shown in those general bundle amounts. See Lightsail pricing and AWS’s transfer allowance explanation. | Check the current Mumbai allowance and total monthly cost. Do not treat the general 1 TB or 3 TB figures as Mumbai allowances. Confirm the instance can sustain your relay or encoding workload through a real test. |
| DigitalOcean Droplets | DigitalOcean describes Droplets as Linux VPS products, with plans covering video-streaming use cases and published entry pricing. See DigitalOcean Droplets pricing. | The cited provider information does not establish India-region availability or the regional transfer terms for this use. Confirm both directly before treating it as an India-hosted option. |
Prices and regional terms can change. Compare the selected data-center region, outbound transfer included for that region, CPU, RAM, storage, and total recurring cost. A plan that looks inexpensive but lacks enough transfer for a nonstop stream may not be economical.

Run a test before committing to 24/7 operation
- Choose the resolution and frame rate. For a fixed rain scene, start by testing 720p/30 rather than paying for capacity you may not need. Compare the actual picture before settling on a bitrate.
- Calculate transfer needs. Estimate daily and monthly outbound data from the chosen bitrate, add headroom for audio and overhead, and compare it with the selected region’s allowance.
- Install and configure the relay or encoder. Use YouTube-compatible protocol, CBR, codec, audio, and keyframe settings. Store the stream key securely rather than placing it in public scripts or logs.
- Test the full path. Run the same source, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate intended for the live stream. Watch YouTube stream health and VPS resource use, then check provider transfer reporting.
- Plan for interruptions. Check how your process reconnects after a network or encoder failure, and monitor the stream rather than assuming that a VPS plan guarantees continuous broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a VPS, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.

Does the VPS need to be in India for an Indian YouTube channel?
The cited provider information does not establish that an India-region VPS is required for a channel based in India. Choose a region based on confirmed availability, transfer terms, cost, and the connection’s performance to YouTube ingest.
Rank #4
Can a low-cost VPS be assumed to run FFmpeg continuously?
No. Published CPU and memory specifications do not prove sustained encoding performance. Test the exact source and settings on the specific plan.
