Neither Azure VM nor AWS EC2 is automatically cheaper or more reliable for a 24/7 YouTube stream. The answer depends on a matched setup: region, VM size and family, operating system, disk, networking, video bitrate and purchase option. Compare both providers with the same assumptions, then test encoding and the route to YouTube ingest in the region you plan to use. No hands-on Azure-versus-AWS benchmark is available here, so performance and reliability should be treated as things to measure—not as established provider differences.
What you are comparing
An Azure Virtual Machine or AWS EC2 instance can host a continuous encoder that sends a pre-recorded video or other video source to YouTube Live. In either case, the cloud VM must stay running, encode or relay the stream, and maintain an outbound connection. The VM’s hourly rate is only part of the cost: operating system charges, storage, IP or networking charges, and outbound data transfer can also matter.
For a fair comparison, choose equivalent regions and a VM configuration that can sustain your encoder workload. Then compare the full monthly bill and test the actual stream path. A low VM price by itself does not establish a low total cost, and a provider’s general availability or discount claims do not establish that your particular stream will stay connected.
Match the workload before comparing providers
Write down the assumptions you will use in both pricing calculators and in your test. If a provider does not offer an exactly matching instance, note the difference instead of treating the configurations as equivalent.

- Region: Select the intended region on both platforms. Region affects prices and may affect the network route to YouTube ingest.
- VM family and size: Match CPU resources and any accelerator needs to the encoder. Sustained encoding load, rather than a short burst, is the relevant capacity test.
- Operating system: Use the same OS where possible and include any OS licensing charges that apply.
- Storage: Include the persistent disk needed for source files, temporary files and logs. Compare disk type and capacity as well as its price.
- Networking: Include a public IP or other required networking charges, and outbound internet data transfer.
- Stream settings: Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and feed count. A higher bitrate creates a larger data-transfer bill.
- Purchase option: Compare on-demand with on-demand first. Evaluate commitments or interruptible capacity separately because they change the price and operating risk.
Estimate bandwidth from the stream bitrate
YouTube’s current H.264 ingest guidance recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. At a constant bitrate for 30 days, those rates produce approximately 3.24 TB and 5.51 TB of video payload, respectively, using decimal terabytes. These are calculations from the stated bitrate and a 30-day duration, before protocol overhead; actual transfer can differ.

YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20% above the combined bitrate and advises accounting for both primary and backup feeds. A single 10 Mbps feed therefore calls for at least 12 Mbps of sustained upload capacity by that guidance; two feeds must be budgeted together. Headroom is not a substitute for testing sustained throughput and reconnect behavior.
For encoder configuration, YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents constant bitrate (CBR) with a 2-second keyframe interval recommendation, no more than 4 seconds. Confirm the current settings against YouTube’s encoder settings guidance before deployment, since support documentation can change.

Compare the full monthly bill
Enter identical assumptions in the AWS EC2 pricing information and the Azure Linux VM pricing information or each provider’s current calculator. Include the VM hours, OS, persistent disk, public IP or networking, and outbound data. The exact total depends on region, configuration and current rates.

As a regional example—not a universal AWS rate—the AWS US East (Ohio) outbound internet data table lists $0.09/GB for the first 10 TB per month, $0.085/GB for the next 40 TB, $0.07/GB for the next 100 TB, and $0.05/GB above 150 TB. This is egress pricing only, not a complete EC2 bill. See the AWS US East (Ohio) pricing table and select your actual region before estimating.
At the recommended 1080p rates above, monthly payload can be measured in several terabytes. Do not apply the Ohio example to another region or assume that a free data-transfer allowance removes all egress charges; check the allowance’s stated aggregation and geography terms against your account and usage.

Discounts and purchase options are not directly interchangeable
AWS describes Savings Plans and Spot purchase options. Spot capacity is subject to AWS’s availability model, so it should not be treated as equivalent to uninterrupted on-demand capacity for a stream expected to run continuously. Decide how an interruption would be detected and recovered before making an interruptible option part of the design.
Microsoft advertises “up to 72%” savings versus pay-as-you-go for eligible Azure one- or three-year reservations matched to VM type, region and term. This is Microsoft’s maximum marketing claim, not an expected saving for this workload. A reservation commits you to its qualifying configuration and term, so compare its actual quoted price and commitment with your likely usage.
Do not compare the providers’ largest discount claims as if they covered the same VM, region, term or interruption assumptions. First establish the on-demand cost for matched configurations; then assess any commitment or capacity risk separately. Test encoding and recovery in the selected region
Calculators estimate charges; they do not show whether a VM can sustain your encoder settings or maintain a usable route to YouTube ingest. Before relying on either provider, run the intended encoder configuration in the chosen region and observe it under continuous load.
- Confirm the YouTube workflow. Create or configure the live stream in YouTube Studio and obtain its stream key. Follow YouTube’s live stream settings instructions. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Configure the encoder. Use RTMPS, the intended resolution and frame rate, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds). Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations as a starting point, not a guarantee that a particular VM will handle the workload.
- Measure sustained capacity. Watch CPU or accelerator use, dropped frames, encoder errors and network throughput over an extended run. Confirm that the VM has upload headroom beyond the combined primary and backup bitrates.
- Check ingest and reconnect behavior. Observe whether the feed stays connected to YouTube and how quickly it recovers after a controlled encoder restart or network interruption. Do not infer reliability from a brief successful launch.
- Test the restart path. Decide how the encoder process and VM will start after a failure or planned maintenance. Verify that the stream can resume with the correct key and settings, and that alerts reveal a feed that is no longer live.
- Recheck the bill inputs. Compare measured data transfer and chosen resources against the calculator assumptions. Update the estimate if the test requires a larger VM, additional disk or backup feed.
Neither provider is established here as having better ingest routing, restart behavior or sustained performance for this workload. Those are region- and configuration-specific test results to collect for your own stream.

YouTube’s help page says an encoder stream under 12 hours is automatically archived. A single continuous 24/7 run exceeds that stated threshold, so do not assume YouTube will create the same archive for it. Choose source material you have the rights to stream. A cloud VM does not make copyrighted music, gameplay footage or other reused material permissible. YouTube’s copyright rules and monetization eligibility are separate questions: permission to use material does not guarantee monetization, and repeating content does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s reused-content requirements. Check the applicable YouTube policies for your channel and content before scheduling a continuous stream.
Common problems and what to check
- The total is much higher than the VM price: Review outbound data transfer, disk, OS, IP/networking and any additional capacity charges. Estimate egress using your bitrate and region rather than compute hours alone.
- The stream drops frames or the encoder is overloaded: Check sustained CPU or accelerator load and confirm the selected VM can maintain the chosen resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Reduce the workload or select a larger suitable configuration, then repeat the full-duration test.
- YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient feed: Check sustained upload throughput, encoder bitrate and the 20% headroom recommendation. Include backup feeds in the combined bandwidth requirement.
- The stream does not reconnect after a drop: Verify the encoder process restart behavior, VM startup configuration, stream key and YouTube live settings. Test recovery deliberately and ensure monitoring alerts when the feed is offline.
- An Azure VM still incurs compute charges after stopping: Check its status. Stopped is not the same as Stopped (Deallocated); Microsoft says the former remains billable for compute.
- The expected archive is missing: Check the stream’s continuous run length. YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement applies to encoder streams under 12 hours, not a 24/7 continuous run.
