There is no evidence-backed universal “cheapest” VPS for 24/7 YouTube streaming in India: a low monthly rental can cost more once you account for the stream’s outbound data, region, tax, IPv4, and overage. First choose the stream settings, calculate the monthly transfer requirement, then compare current checkout totals. At YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps H.264 bitrate for 1080p30, a nonstop 30-day stream sends about 4.54 TB of video payload before protocol overhead.
What makes a VPS cheap enough for a nonstop stream?
For a 24/7 stream, monthly outbound transfer can matter more than the advertised server price. A VPS that includes less data than your stream needs may trigger overage charges, throttling, or a need to upgrade. Calculate the stream first; then compare providers on an equivalent basis.
Estimate the monthly transfer
Use the video bitrate, not the viewer’s download speed. At a constant bitrate, the approximate decimal gigabytes sent over a period are:
Mbps × seconds × 1,000,000 ÷ 8,000,000,000 = GB
YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. Over 30 days (2,592,000 seconds), that works out to 4.536 TB—about 4.54 TB—of video payload. This is a calculation from YouTube’s recommended bitrate, not a published usage statistic, and it excludes protocol overhead and any other server traffic. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

Use the bitrate row for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than assuming every 1080p stream has the same requirement. YouTube’s guide recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. Check whether a VPS provider measures its allowance in decimal TB or binary TiB, counts outbound traffic, and charges for excess transfer.

How dated VPS examples compare—and why none proves a winner
A StreamNeo comparison published on 2026-07-26, with an update noted on 2026-09-19, cited these provider prices as of July 2026. They help illustrate why transfer capacity and region matter, but they do not establish the cheapest current VPS for an Indian channel.
| Provider and plan cited | Price and transfer cited | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | US$4 with 500 GiB transfer; US$12 with 2,000 GiB transfer | Current checkout total, suitable region, and transfer charges above the included amount. |
| Amazon Lightsail Linux bundle | US$7 with 2 TB transfer | Current availability, region, billing terms, and excess-transfer charges. |
| Hetzner CX23 | €5.49/month in Germany or Finland, before IPv4 and VAT | Current price, location suitability, IPv4, VAT, and transfer terms. |
These allowances are below the roughly 4.54 TB of monthly video payload calculated for 14 Mbps at 1080p30, before overhead. That does not by itself determine a final bill: providers’ transfer rules and overage terms differ. The comparison is available at StreamNeo’s 24/7 streaming cost comparison.

India-focused listings surfaced in search are not enough to identify a reliable price winner either. Plex Scale’s VPS page showed a Mumbai starter display of ₹399/month with 3 TB bandwidth, but the same result also showed ₹549/month; the offer, billing basis, and current checkout total need confirmation. VyomCloud advertises Mumbai VPS plans and a 99.5% uptime SLA, but the available plan information did not establish a price. Check Plex Scale’s VPS page and VyomCloud’s Mumbai VPS page directly for current terms. A displayed SLA is a provider claim, not a guarantee that your particular stream will never drop.
Choose copy mode or re-encoding before sizing the server
Loop a compatible file with stream copy
If the source is already encoded in a format and settings YouTube accepts, FFmpeg can send the existing audio and video streams without re-encoding them. This copy-mode workflow avoids the CPU work of encoding, though it still requires adequate network transfer and a process that stays running. It is the lower-CPU route described in the comparison; no benchmarked minimum VPS size was established.

Re-encode only when your source requires it
Re-encoding can be necessary if the source codec, container, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate does not suit the intended output. It adds compute demand, so a VPS size that handles stream copy may not handle encoding reliably. No tested minimum CPU or memory configuration is established here; do not buy a particular server size on the assumption that it has been benchmarked.
YouTube settings to use as your technical baseline
YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Use the codec- and resolution-specific bitrate row for your target output: for H.264, the cited recommendations include 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60.

For FFmpeg, choose the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown in your YouTube Live Control Room, and keep the key private. Configure your encoder to match the target settings and keyframe interval, then test using content with similar motion and audio to the intended stream. YouTube transcodes live video for different viewer formats; monitor the stream’s health rather than assuming a successful connection means the output is healthy. The current detailed requirements are in YouTube’s encoder-settings guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run FFmpeg on a VPS: the practical setup sequence
The exact FFmpeg command depends on the source file, its codecs, and whether you are copying or encoding. The sequence below avoids prescribing a command that could silently mismatch the media or your YouTube settings.
- Confirm the source and target. Check the file’s video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Decide whether YouTube can accept those streams as-is or whether you need to re-encode.
- Provision a VPS only after checking data transfer. Compare the plan’s outbound allowance with your calculated monthly payload, add headroom for overhead and other traffic, and confirm region, IPv4, tax, and overage terms.
- Install FFmpeg and test locally or on the server. Confirm that FFmpeg can read the file and that your chosen copy or encode workflow produces the intended output before configuring an unattended loop.
- Set up YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use its RTMPS ingest address and stream key. Do not expose the key in a public script, log, or repository.
- Configure the output to YouTube’s requirements. Set RTMPS, CBR, the appropriate bitrate for the chosen codec and resolution, and a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds). Match the audio codec and frame rate to the supported settings.
- Make the process persistent and observable. Arrange for the FFmpeg process to start after a reboot and restart if it exits, using a service manager or supervisor appropriate to your operating system. Keep logs, check them after a restart, and monitor YouTube stream health.
- Test failure recovery. Verify what happens after an FFmpeg crash, server reboot, or dropped YouTube connection. A VPS does not automatically make the streaming process self-healing; recovery depends on your process supervision and reconnect configuration.
A continuous stream also has to comply with YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules. Use content you have the rights to stream, including music and other embedded material; looping a file does not grant rights. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization assessment is separate from whether an encoder can technically deliver the stream. Check the current YouTube policies relevant to your channel before relying on a repeated pre-recorded stream for monetization.
Managed streaming alternatives to server administration
If your priority is keeping a YouTube stream running without administering a VPS, managed continuous-streaming services trade server control for a service fee. These are distinct from VPS rental: the service operates the streaming infrastructure. Verify current quality limits, destination terms, storage, reconnect behavior, tax, and cancellation conditions with the provider.
- StreamNeo — first option to try: it runs uploaded videos from the cloud, can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day with no card. Its feature and pricing statements are vendor claims, not independently tested performance.
- StreamSetu: its pricing page lists prepaid daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly cloud-streaming plans, says channels stream in 1080p, and advertises automatic reconnect. The page states prices are subject to 18% GST; verify the current total, storage terms, and what “per channel” covers at checkout. See StreamSetu’s pricing page.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the uploaded video playing, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; after that, the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plan details, then start the free first day.
Quick Recap
Common problems and what to check
- The stream stops before the month ends: check actual outbound transfer against the plan allowance, including overage rules. A constant bitrate can use several terabytes in a month.
- YouTube reports a poor or unstable stream: check that the output bitrate, codec, keyframe interval, and audio settings match YouTube’s guidance; inspect server bandwidth and FFmpeg logs, then test with representative content.
- The stream drops and does not resume: inspect FFmpeg’s logs and your supervisor or service-manager configuration. Confirm that the process restarts after exit or reboot and that reconnect behavior works for the YouTube endpoint.
- The VPS is overloaded: determine whether FFmpeg is re-encoding. Copy mode and encoding are different workloads; reduce unnecessary encoding or reassess the server after testing rather than assuming a minimum specification.
- The invoice exceeds the advertised rate: review region, tax, IPv4, exchange rate, and excess-transfer charges in the provider checkout and invoice.
- The stream connects but faces a rights or monetization issue: review the rights to every audio and video element and YouTube’s current channel policies; successful delivery is not evidence of permission or monetization eligibility.
