OBS can reconnect after a temporary network drop, but an OBS update or computer reboot stops the local encoder. To recover, arrange for the operating system to relaunch OBS with the right profile and scene, start streaming automatically, allow time for the network to return, and verify the feed in YouTube Studio. This is a recovery plan—not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback through a restart.
Why reconnect alone does not restart a stream
OBS automatic reconnect is intended to help when an OBS session is already running and temporarily loses its connection. It does not relaunch OBS after an update, process exit, or computer reboot. Those failures need a separate startup method that opens OBS and starts the stream.
A local setup also depends on the PC, power, and internet connection at the streaming location. If an update requires a restart, viewers may experience an interruption. Neither OBS nor YouTube promises that a stream will resume seamlessly or that every restart will continue the same scheduled event.
Prepare YouTube’s broadcast settings and stream key
Protect and check the stream key
YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password and address for sending a feed. Keep it private. If you reset the key in YouTube, replace the old key in OBS before expecting the encoder to connect. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance and stream key guidance.

Review scheduled-stream behavior
For a scheduled broadcast, check its auto-start and auto-stop settings. These determine whether starting or stopping encoder transmission also starts or ends the YouTube broadcast. YouTube notes that reusing stream settings carries those selections forward, so confirm them when creating or reusing an event rather than assuming the new event has different behavior. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the controls.
Set up OBS to reconnect and start after a reboot
Enable automatic reconnect for a live OBS session
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and review the automatic reconnect options. OBS identifies automatic reconnect as an Advanced setting; labels and available controls can vary by version. It can help with a transient connection loss while OBS remains open, but it does not replace startup automation. See the OBS Studio overview.

Launch OBS with streaming enabled
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter as a way to automatically start streaming. For an automated Windows launch, OBS says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. Use the launch method appropriate to your operating system, and make sure it opens the profile and scene collection your station actually uses. OBS’s launch-parameter documentation describes the parameter and working-directory requirement.
For Windows Scheduled Tasks or another startup mechanism, configure it to run after sign-in or system startup as appropriate for your setup, with the correct OBS executable, arguments, and working directory. The exact scheduler screens and options depend on the Windows version and account configuration; the OBS documentation establishes the launch parameter, not a universal task recipe. Test the automation with a controlled restart before relying on it.

Allow the network to come back first
After a power failure or reboot, the computer may be ready before the router or internet connection. A 2024 OBS forum reply describes an initial connection failure in one user’s case that auto-reconnect did not solve; this is community experience, not an OBS guarantee. Consider delaying OBS startup and adding a retry or monitoring step so a brief network startup lag does not leave the stream stopped.
Plan updates and verify recovery
Schedule maintenance deliberately
Apply OBS and operating-system updates during a low-audience window. For a station that must stay available, tell listeners when a pause may occur and prepare a simple holding slate or audio message if your production setup supports one. A scheduled maintenance window reduces surprise; it cannot make a local restart invisible to viewers.

Check both OBS and YouTube
- Confirm OBS has opened with the intended profile and scene collection.
- Check that OBS reports an active stream and that the expected audio and video are present in the output.
- Open the correct scheduled event in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm it is receiving a signal and reports stream health.
- Listen to or watch the delivered feed where practical. An OBS status indicator alone does not prove YouTube is receiving usable audio and video.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archival behavior does not establish that a reboot will resume the same event or avoid a gap. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

- OBS never opens: Check the operating system’s startup or scheduled-task configuration, the OBS executable path, permissions, and—on automated Windows launches—the working directory.
- OBS opens but does not stream: Confirm the launch includes
--startstreaming, the correct profile and scene are selected, and the stream key in OBS matches YouTube’s current key. - OBS tries but cannot connect: Check whether the router and internet connection are ready, then inspect OBS’s connection status. A startup delay and retry/monitoring step can address a network that comes up later than the PC.
- OBS is streaming but YouTube shows no incoming feed: Verify the selected event, stream key, and YouTube Live Control Room signal. Do not treat a local OBS status as proof of delivery.
- The feed reaches YouTube but the broadcast does not behave as expected: Review auto-start and auto-stop for the scheduled event, including settings inherited from a reused stream setup.
- Video or audio is missing after recovery: Check the active scene, media sources, and audio path in OBS, then confirm the actual YouTube feed rather than relying only on the encoder status.
