You cannot update the executable underneath a running FFmpeg process and keep that process’s YouTube connection intact. Replacing the package or binary on disk does not change the build already in memory; restarting FFmpeg replaces the process and ends its current output connection. To reduce disruption, stage and test a second encoder, then coordinate a handoff using a workflow verified for your YouTube event. Do not assume the transition will be gapless.
What happens when you update or restart FFmpeg?
The FFmpeg executable on disk and an FFmpeg process already running are separate. Installing a newer package or replacing a binary does not upgrade the active process. A restart starts a new process, and the old process’s ingest connection ends when it stops.
That means updating the only FFmpeg process serving an active stream cannot preserve that process’s connection. A second, independently staged encoder gives you a way to test a candidate before cutting over, but YouTube’s published guidance does not define a universal zero-interruption handoff. The result depends on the event and ingest workflow you actually use.
Choose an update approach

Prepare a safe update
1. Inventory the live service
Before changing anything, record the operating-system distribution and release, installed FFmpeg version and build configuration, executable path, package source, full command line, environment and configuration files, systemd unit, input source, output protocol, and destination. Check YouTube Live Control Room for the event’s current health. Treat stream keys as secrets: do not expose them in logs, public scripts, or screenshots.

2. Select and stage the candidate
For routine maintenance, prefer the distribution’s supported package channel unless you need a codec, protocol, or fix it does not provide. If a custom or newer build is required, install it alongside the old binary or on a second VPS so the current service can keep running while you evaluate it. Package choices and commands vary by distribution and release; check that system’s official package and security guidance rather than assuming one channel fits all systems.
3. Compare build capabilities
Run ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -buildconf against the candidate. Confirm that the build includes the encoders, decoders, and protocols your command needs, including the intended output protocol. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly for the newest revision, so check options against the version and build you will actually run.

4. Test the candidate away from the public event
Use a non-public or test event, or another isolated setup. Send representative video motion and audio, then check that the candidate reaches the intended YouTube event. Inspect Live Control Room’s stream health and messages; verify the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. A process that starts successfully is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Coordinate the handoff
- Keep the old encoder available. Do not stop the current process until the candidate has passed the isolated checks.
- Confirm how the event accepts a sender change. Coordinate stopping one sender and activating the other using the workflow for the specific event and ingest setup.
- Avoid an untested concurrent publish. YouTube’s published guidance does not establish that two FFmpeg processes can safely publish to the same live event or stream key at once. Test that behavior before relying on it.
- Choose an honest fallback. If your tested setup cannot accept a parallel sender, schedule a short interruption or use a separately validated ingest or handoff architecture. Do not describe an untested change as seamless.
- Verify the new stream end to end. Confirm the replacement process remains active, YouTube receives video and audio, stream health is acceptable, and viewers can play the stream.
- Keep rollback ready. Retain the previous executable or recoverable package version, prior service configuration, and old command line until the replacement is stable. If checks fail, stop the candidate and restore the old build and command using the procedure you tested.
Understand systemd’s role
systemctl restart stops and starts the unit; it is not a live binary swap. A Restart= policy, such as Restart=on-failure, controls whether systemd starts a process again after eligible exits or failures. It does not restart FFmpeg just because the executable on disk changed, and an intentional stop or restart is not seamless continuity.

systemctl reload asks a service to reload configuration if that service implements reload support. It does not, by itself, replace the running FFmpeg executable or transfer its output connection. Do not rely on systemctl reload ffmpeg unless the particular unit and wrapper explicitly implement a suitable action—and you have tested what that action does.
systemctl daemon-reload makes systemd reread unit definitions after you change a unit file. It does not reload FFmpeg. Follow the manual for your Ubuntu release or other distribution for exact commands, then verify the unit’s status. Ubuntu’s service-management examples use daemon-reload after unit changes and check service status afterward.

Check YouTube encoder settings during testing
YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, testing with representative audio and video motion, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. YouTube says: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the current YouTube encoder guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying a bitrate from a different format.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate example: YouTube lists H.264 at 1080p30 as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Those figures apply to that listed codec and format, not other resolutions or codecs.
- Motion and audio: Test representative content; a static or silent test may not reveal problems that appear with real material.
- Health checks: Check YouTube’s incoming stream status and messages, not only the FFmpeg log or process ID.
These are published technical recommendations, not a guarantee that an FFmpeg update or event handoff will avoid interruption. No outage rate or success rate for updating a sole FFmpeg process during an active YouTube stream is established here.

Troubleshoot a failed update or handoff
- The old stream stops when you install a package: Installation alone does not normally replace the in-memory process, but package scripts or a service manager may restart it. Check the package’s behavior and service logs; for a critical stream, stage the candidate separately before changing the live service.
- The candidate starts but YouTube shows no incoming video: Check the destination, protocol, protected stream-key configuration, and whether the intended event is accepting that sender. Confirm that the build supports the required output protocol.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare actual codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance for that format. Test representative motion and audio and inspect Live Control Room messages.
- The unit does not use the new binary: Check the executable path in the unit, wrapper, or command. A changed file on disk does not change the process already running; verify the candidate path and restart only when your handoff plan allows.
- A systemd reload appears to do nothing: Reload support is unit-specific. Inspect the unit and wrapper for an implemented reload action; use
daemon-reloadonly when systemd unit definitions changed, and do not mistake it for an FFmpeg binary update. - The new build lacks an encoder, decoder, or option: Compare
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -buildconfwith the working build. Restore the prior executable or package and configuration while you stage a compatible candidate. - The new encoder fails after cutover: Stop the candidate, restore the retained old command and build using your tested rollback steps, then confirm YouTube is receiving the recovered stream.
