You can build a continuous YouTube lofi stream with FFmpeg by concatenating compatible audio files, pairing the playlist with a visual, and sending the output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The concat demuxer reads files in sequence; it does not automatically make different formats compatible or guarantee that the playlist will repeat forever. Before going live, validate the loop and connection—and confirm that your music license covers live streaming and that the rights owner has allowlisted your channel in Content ID.
What you need before you start
- A library of lofi tracks that you have permission to use in a YouTube livestream and its replay or archive.
- A visual to accompany the audio, such as a still image or a prepared video loop.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can remain connected while you stream.
- A YouTube Live event and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a public playlist or command log.
- A reliable upload connection with enough capacity for the stream, plus a way to monitor and restart the FFmpeg process if it stops.
This workflow is configuration guidance, not a tested universal command. FFmpeg builds and available encoders differ, so verify options on your installed version and test with a private or unlisted event before relying on a long-running stream. Prepare audio files for the concat demuxer
Check that the files are compatible
The concat demuxer reads listed files sequentially without re-encoding, but it expects the files to have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. A playlist does not make mixed media compatible. If your tracks differ in format, codec, sample rate, channel layout, or stream structure, normalize them to a consistent format first. If that is not practical, use a workflow that re-encodes the inputs rather than assuming the demuxer will reconcile them.
File durations also matter: the demuxer uses each file’s duration to place the following file’s timestamps. Incorrect duration information can cause artifacts, and streams with different lengths may create gaps. Check the assets and use an explicit duration directive only when you know the correct duration. See the concat demuxer documentation.

Choose demuxer or filter
- Concat demuxer: appropriate when the inputs have compatible streams and you want sequential concatenation without re-encoding.
- Concat filter: consider this when the inputs need to be re-encoded or their differences must be normalized as part of the output workflow.
FFmpeg explains the distinction in its concat demuxer and filter FAQ. Re-encoding requires an encoder and settings suited to the output; the playlist itself does not provide them.
Write the FFmpeg concat playlist
Put the playlist and media in a predictable working directory. A minimal list looks like this:

file 'track-003.wav'For automatic format recognition, the optional signature must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 on the first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark. Each file line names one asset in playback order. Quote or escape paths that contain spaces or special characters.
FFmpeg’s safe-path checking is enabled by default. It rejects paths that are not relative and portable, so keep the playlist and media in an appropriate relative directory or make a deliberate, informed choice about the safe-path option when using trusted files. Do not relax path safety for an untrusted playlist. Consult the concat script syntax and options for the exact behavior of your installed version.

Pair the playlist with a visual and configure YouTube ingest
The concat list schedules the files it names; it does not synchronize a separate visual playlist automatically. Treat the visual as a separate FFmpeg input and construct the output so that the audio and video have suitable durations and remain in sync. A still image or loop can provide the visual, but the exact command depends on the input formats, chosen encoder, and local FFmpeg build.

- Ingest: use RTMPS, which YouTube recommends.
- Video rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: target one every two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 are accepted; YouTube recommends stereo audio at 128 kbps.
- Video mode: choose a supported resolution and frame rate appropriate to the visual, encoder capacity, and available upload bandwidth.
YouTube transcodes live streams into other viewer formats. These ingest recommendations are not a complete FFmpeg command and do not guarantee a stable 24/7 connection. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance before choosing output options.

- Start with a private or unlisted test event. Use representative audio and movement, not just a short silent or static test.
- Check upload capacity. Measure the connection you will actually use and leave headroom for fluctuations; a nominal upload speed is not proof that the stream will remain healthy.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health. Watch for warnings during the test and confirm the event receives both audio and video.
- Verify playlist wraparound. The concat demuxer documents sequential reading and timestamp behavior, but that documentation does not establish a universal directive that repeats the entire playlist indefinitely. Test loop option order and semantics on your installed FFmpeg version, including whether playback restarts cleanly without a gap or timestamp problem.
- Plan process and network recovery separately. A playlist loop does not supervise FFmpeg or restore a dropped network connection. Arrange monitoring and a restart strategy suitable for your host, and test what happens when the process or connection is interrupted.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; neither those checks nor FFmpeg’s concat behavior promises continuous uptime. See YouTube’s stream-health guidance and FFmpeg’s timestamp and duration notes.

Clear music rights before the first public stream
Only use music whose rights cover the intended YouTube livestream and any replay or archive. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning or placeholder, and continued use can result in temporary interruption or termination.
A license alone may not prevent a live interruption. YouTube says: “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the content.” Ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before launch, and keep written records of the license scope and permission.
