Install FFmpeg from Raspberry Pi OS’s APT repositories with sudo apt update and sudo apt install ffmpeg. That installs the encoder; to loop a video to YouTube Live, you must also provide a media file, a suitable encoding configuration, and the stream URL and private stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room.
Install FFmpeg on Raspberry Pi OS

Open a terminal on the Raspberry Pi, or connect to it remotely.

Refresh APT’s package lists:
sudo apt update -
Install FFmpeg:
sudo apt install ffmpeg -
Check that the executable is available and see the installed build’s details:
ffmpeg -version
Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation uses the same APT installation command, and Raspberry Pi OS documentation describes APT as its package manager. The package version and available encoders depend on the OS image, hardware architecture, and configured repositories; this guide does not assume one version. If APT cannot find the package
First check that the Pi is connected to the internet, then confirm its Raspberry Pi OS repositories are enabled and configured correctly. Refresh package lists with sudo apt update and retry. Avoid using an arbitrary prebuilt binary as the default workaround: package availability and compatibility can vary by OS release and architecture.
What you need before streaming

A local video file that the installed FFmpeg build can read.

A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live and the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room.

A Raspberry Pi model and network connection capable of sustaining your chosen resolution, frame rate, encoding load, and upload bitrate.

The stream key authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in an article, screenshot, shared command, or source-control repository. YouTube’s Live Control Room supplies the stream URL and key for the encoder. [YouTube: Set up a live stream with an encoder]

Choose settings the Pi and connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. These are YouTube ingest requirements and recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Pi can encode a given format in real time. These figures are YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, and concern the video bitrate—not a measured Raspberry Pi performance result. YouTube advises keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Choose a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the Pi cannot encode smoothly or the connection cannot reliably upload the stream. [YouTube encoder settings] [YouTube: Tips for live streaming]
Build a looping FFmpeg command
The example below shows the command structure for a local file, H.264 video, AAC audio, and an RTMPS destination. It is a template, not a verified universal command: source formats, audio presence, FFmpeg build options, Raspberry Pi model, and YouTube’s ingest URL all matter. Replace the placeholders and confirm the installed build supports the selected encoders and protocol before relying on it.

-c:v libx264selects software H.264 encoding where that encoder is present in the local FFmpeg build. Verify withffmpeg -encoders; hardware encoding availability and options vary. -
-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeset video rate-control parameters. The sample’s 8 Mbps corresponds to YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for 720p/30, not a claim that every Pi can handle it. Lower it if needed, and keep total upload bitrate within your connection’s sustained capacity with headroom.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. -g 60and-keyint_min 60target a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps—two seconds. If you change the frame rate, recalculate the GOP for a two-second interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. -
-c:a aacand the audio options assume the input contains audio. If it does not, remove the audio options and add-anto avoid requesting an audio stream that does not exist. If you need to retain the source audio without re-encoding, that requires a compatible input and ingest format; validate rather than assuming. -
Replace the quoted destination with the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not expose the real key when saving or sharing the command. Depending on shell history and process visibility, entering a key inline can leave it accessible locally; restrict access to the Pi and its account.

For a 1080p/30 H.264 target, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps video bitrate; do not simply substitute that value unless the Pi can sustain the encode and your upload connection has enough capacity for total bitrate plus the recommended 20% headroom. Check the available encoders with ffmpeg -encoders. YouTube’s supported codecs and settings can change, so consult its current encoder guidance when choosing a different format. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open a stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the command template.

Start with a private or unlisted test stream and observe YouTube’s stream health. Keep the Pi running and connected while FFmpeg sends the loop.

Check that the video is playing, audio behaves as intended, and the loop restarts as expected. Watch CPU load, dropped frames, and network stability over time; a short successful start does not establish that a Pi can sustain a continuous stream.

If the stream stutters or YouTube reports an unstable connection, reduce the output bitrate or resolution, check the Pi’s CPU load, and verify that the upload connection has sufficient sustained capacity.

YouTube copyright and repeat-stream considerations
Only stream video and audio you have the rights or permission to use. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it includes copyrighted material, and repeated or reused material may raise separate channel-policy and monetization questions. Installing FFmpeg or successfully sending a stream does not grant rights to the content or guarantee channel eligibility. Review YouTube’s current policies and any notices shown in Studio before leaving a loop running.
Troubleshooting
