To make USB media available at the same predictable path every time a Raspberry Pi starts, identify the drive’s partition UUID, create an empty mount point, and add a matching entry to /etc/fstab. Then test the mount before rebooting. This only makes files accessible: playback, encoding, and starting a YouTube Live broadcast are separate steps.
Choose desktop automount or a fixed path
On Raspberry Pi OS desktop, some common filesystems are automatically mounted at a label-based path under /media/pi. That may be sufficient if your application can use the path the desktop assigns. Raspberry Pi OS Lite does not provide desktop automounting. If your encoder workflow needs a known path—or you use Lite—configure a fixed mount explicitly.
Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes defining where storage is mounted at startup in /etc/fstab: Configuration: External storage. The procedure below uses a partition UUID rather than assuming the device will always have a name such as /dev/sda1.
Automatically mount a USB drive on Raspberry Pi boot
1. Identify the intended partition
Connect the drive and inspect its partitions:
sudo lsblk -o UUID,NAME,FSTYPE,SIZE,MOUNTPOINT,LABEL,MODELMatch the intended partition by its UUID, filesystem type, size, and other identifying details. You can also use sudo blkid to find filesystem UUIDs, as Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes. Do not copy a sample UUID or guess a device name or filesystem type; a drive can receive a different /dev/sdX name when connected in a different order.

2. Create the fixed mount point
Choose a clear path that your playback or streaming application can use, for example /mnt/stream-media:
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/stream-mediaThe directory should be empty before the drive is mounted. If it already contains files, mounting over it hides them from view until the drive is unmounted.

3. Back up and edit /etc/fstab
Back up the file before changing it, then open it with an editor using administrator privileges:
sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.backup
sudo nano /etc/fstabAdd one line using the actual partition UUID, the mount point you created, and the filesystem type shown by lsblk. Raspberry Pi’s documentation gives this as an example format:

UUID=5C24-1453 /mnt/mydisk fstype defaults,auto,users,rw,nofail 0 0Replace 5C24-1453, /mnt/mydisk, and fstype with values for your own partition and path. The example is not a universal mount line: the correct filesystem helper, permissions, and options depend on the filesystem and OS release. Use an accurate filesystem type and consult the Raspberry Pi documentation for the format you have.
For FAT or NTFS, Raspberry Pi’s documentation says to add ,umask=000 immediately after nofail if you want full read/write access for every user. That grants broad permissions, so do not add it automatically. Consider which account and programs need access, and use permissions appropriate to your setup. Requirements for exFAT can also vary with the OS release and installed filesystem support.

The UUID-based entry lets the system start whether or not the storage device is attached, according to Raspberry Pi’s documentation. The nofail option is part of the documented example; it does not remove the need to check that the entry is correct.
4. Validate the entry before rebooting
Ask the system to process the configured mounts, then inspect the result:

ls -la /mnt/stream-mediaIf mount -a reports an error, correct /etc/fstab before rebooting. A malformed entry can cause boot-time problems. Confirm that the intended account and streaming program can read the media. Reboot and check that /mnt/stream-media is mounted again. If the Pi must start with the drive unplugged, also check that behavior with the device disconnected.
Use the mounted media in a YouTube Live encoder
A successful mount does not start playback or a broadcast. Configure the application that plays or captures the content separately, and point its media input at the appropriate file or directory under /mnt/stream-media. Then configure the encoder’s YouTube connection.
- Create or select a live stream. Use YouTube Live Control Room and follow YouTube’s encoder setup and preview workflow.
- Configure the encoder connection. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube explains live stream settings, including the URL and key, in Manage live stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a tutorial, terminal output, or screenshot. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s reset workflow.
- Choose settings the whole setup can sustain. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; these are platform recommendations, not evidence that an unspecified Raspberry Pi can encode at every listed setting.
- Test representative content and monitor the preview. YouTube recommends testing audio and movement similar to what the real stream will contain. Check the preview and stream health before an event, and monitor the broadcast once it begins.
Two examples from YouTube’s H.264 recommended bitrate table are 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. The retrieved guidance does not state a publication year for these recommendations. They are YouTube settings guidance, not measurements of Raspberry Pi encoding performance. Choose a resolution and bitrate the encoder and network can sustain.
Common problems and fixes
- The mount path is empty after reboot: Recheck the UUID and filesystem type against
lsblkorblkid, make sure the mount point matches the/etc/fstabentry, then runsudo mount -aand resolve any reported error. - The drive appears at a different path: A desktop label-based automount path under
/media/piis not the same as a configured fixed path. Use the explicit UUID-based/etc/fstabsetup when the application needs a stable location. - The mount succeeds but the application cannot read files: Check the permissions and ownership relevant to the account running the application. Do not apply
umask=000by default; it allows all users full read/write access on the applicable FAT or NTFS configuration. - The Pi reports an fstab or boot-time mount error: Correct the entry before rebooting further. Confirm that UUID, mount point, filesystem type, and options match the actual drive; restore the backup if necessary.
- The stream does not connect or the preview is unhealthy: Check the stream URL and key in the encoder, confirm the selected protocol and encoder settings, and review YouTube’s stream health. Do not share the key when asking for help.
- Video stutters or the stream drops: Test with representative motion and audio, then reduce settings if the encoder or network cannot sustain them. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations do not guarantee performance on a particular Pi.
