The encoder can run on your own computer, or a cloud service can run the prerecorded stream remotely. Either way, test your specific files and setup; “24/7” is an operating goal, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream and access to YouTube Studio.
- A folder of sleep-sound videos that you own or have permission to use, including both the visuals and audio.
- An encoder running on a computer, or a cloud service that can play prerecorded videos as a live stream.
- A way to monitor the broadcast and respond if its picture, sound, or connection fails.
YouTube says livestreamers must verify their channel, have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and be at least 16 years old. YouTube also says a live-stream strike prevents streaming for 14 days. Follow the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; do not try to bypass an active restriction by streaming from another channel. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
Prepare the sleep-sound videos
Check the rights to picture and sound
Make sure you have the necessary rights or permission for every component of each video. Sleep audio is not exempt from copyright rules, and visuals can also trigger a match. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even if you have a licence, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist, so a licence alone does not guarantee the stream will avoid interruption. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
Make a repeatable sequence
Collect the videos into a playlist or other sequence that your chosen encoder or service can repeat. Check that the end of one clip and beginning of the next do not create an unwanted silence, abrupt sound change, or visual interruption. The precise playlist controls depend on the software or service you use; confirm that it can loop the whole sequence rather than stopping after one pass.

Choose where the stream will run
| Approach | What runs it | Best fit | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local encoder | A computer runs streaming software and sends its output directly to YouTube. | You already have suitable hardware and can keep it powered, connected, and monitored. | Power and internet availability, maintenance, and your ability to restart the encoder. The available sources do not establish minimum computer specifications or upload bandwidth. |
| Cloud service | A provider runs a continuous prerecorded stream remotely. | You do not want a local computer to be responsible for keeping the broadcast running. | Check the service’s recurring cost, playlist and restart controls, storage, access to your media, and recovery behavior before choosing it. These vary by provider. |
For a local setup, OBS states that its connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service. That means the computer, encoder, power, and internet connection are part of the operating chain. A cloud service moves the continuous playback off your computer, but you should still check the provider’s specific limits and controls.
Set up YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Confirm channel eligibility. Verify your channel and make sure it has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube states that you must be at least 16 to livestream. If access is restricted, resolve it through YouTube’s process rather than trying to stream through another channel. Review YouTube’s livestreaming requirements
- Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Set the title, visibility, and other stream details there. Use a test or private setup first if you need to check the configuration without launching the intended public broadcast.
- Copy the stream key from Studio into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream. Keep it private, and do not post it in screenshots, chat, or public notes.
- Set the encoder to send the prepared sequence. Select the playlist or repeatable source, then connect it to YouTube using the stream key. Software interfaces differ, so use the current instructions for your encoder rather than assuming a particular menu or playlist workflow.
- Wait for the Studio preview and inspect it. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended video and audio before starting the public broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends preparing ahead, checking the preview, and confirming that viewers can reach the stream. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Test access from more than one place. Open the stream from the channel or watch page and check it on a mobile device as well as your computer. Confirm that the image is visible, the sound is audible at an appropriate level, and the stream is available to the intended audience.
- Start the broadcast and keep monitoring it. Watch the Studio stream health and check that the playlist continues into subsequent videos. For a local stream, also confirm that the computer and connection remain active.
There is no universally safe bitrate or minimum upload speed established here for every sleep video and connection. Test the actual media and network you plan to use instead of assuming one setting will work for all setups. OBS notes that rising dropped-frame counts can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate your link cannot sustain. OBS: Dropped frames and network issues

Keep a long-running broadcast healthy
- Check picture and sound: Verify the stream continues past the first video and through playlist transitions. Listen for silence, clipping, or an unexpectedly loud change.
- Watch stream health: Monitor YouTube Studio for connection warnings and dropped frames. If the count rises, investigate the connection and whether the configured bitrate is too ambitious for it.
- Verify viewer access: Periodically open the public watch page and check from a mobile device. A preview in the encoder is not proof that viewers can access the broadcast.
- Confirm local recording if you use one: YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends checking that any local archive is growing. This is a useful safeguard, not a guarantee about how long YouTube will retain a very long live archive.
- Plan for recovery: Decide how you will notice and restart a stopped encoder, computer, or connection. Do not assume a local setup will restart itself unless you have configured and tested that behavior.
YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality continuously. Its event-oriented preparation timings should not be treated as a formal rule for every continuous broadcast. The sources do not establish a maximum continuous broadcast length or a guaranteed archive-retention period, so check YouTube’s current guidance before relying on a long stream as a permanent recording.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview. | The encoder is not connected, or its stream key or destination is incorrect. | Check that the encoder is sending to YouTube, verify the stream key in Studio, and reconnect. Keep the key private. |
| The preview appears, but viewers cannot watch. | The broadcast may not be live or available with its selected visibility. | Check the stream status and visibility in Studio, then test the channel or watch page from another device. |
| Video stutters or dropped frames increase. | The connection may be unstable, or the bitrate may exceed what the link can sustain. | Check the network and reduce the encoder’s bitrate if needed; then test again while watching stream health. |
| Sound is missing or changes unexpectedly. | The selected playlist, source, or transition may not be behaving as expected. | Inspect the sequence and listen through transitions before relaunching. Test more than one playlist cycle if possible. |
| YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream. | It may have detected third-party content, or the stream may violate a policy. | Review the alert and the rights for both audio and visuals. If you are licensed, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; do not assume the licence alone prevents a match or interruption. |
| A local broadcast stops when unattended. | The computer, encoder, power, or internet connection may have stopped. | Check each part of the local operating chain and decide how to monitor and restart it. If you do not want to maintain an always-on computer, consider a cloud-hosted approach. |
