Raspberry Pi vs. Old PC for a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: use whichever machine can reliably handle your actual stream settings and workload—not whichever device is smaller or older. A Raspberry Pi may suit a simple, low-processing feed if its exact software and encoder path passes a sustained test. An old PC may be the better choice when you need OBS scenes, capture hardware, or live encoding, provided its CPU or supported hardware encoder can keep up. Neither label proves lower power use or better uptime: test the intended setup and measure its power at the wall.

What decides between a Raspberry Pi and an old PC?

The main distinction is whether the computer is merely relaying an already-encoded feed or doing substantial work before sending it to YouTube. Capturing inputs, compositing OBS scenes, scaling, and encoding all add workload. OBS notes that streaming capacity depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; basic system compatibility does not guarantee that a machine can stream a particular workload (OBS System Requirements).

What to compare What to check How it affects the choice
Source and processing Is the feed already encoded, or must the machine capture, composite scenes, scale, or encode it? A simple relay has different compute demands from an OBS production. More scenes and processing make the encoder and sustained performance more consequential.
Output target Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate Choose YouTube-compatible settings, then verify that the specific system sustains them.
Encoder path Available CPU software encoder or supported hardware encoder, including operating system and driver support Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load, but encoder generation can affect image quality at a given bitrate.
Sustained operation Dropped frames, temperature or throttling indicators, audio continuity, and behavior after a restart or network interruption A brief successful start is not proof of dependable round-the-clock operation.
Power and total cost Wall power under the real workload, plus any required power, storage, capture, and network accessories Device category or historical figures cannot establish the cost of your actual setup.
Network and recovery Stable upload with headroom, wired networking where practical, reconnect behavior, and a way to monitor stream health A good local encoder cannot compensate for an unstable upload connection or an unattended failure.

How to choose: test the real stream, not the device name

  1. Define the source and output. Write down whether you are relaying an encoded file or feed, or using OBS to capture and compose a production. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
  2. Check the exact encoder path. Confirm that the operating system and streaming software support the CPU or hardware encoder on the specific PC or Raspberry Pi. Do not assume that a connector, memory amount, or model name proves encoding capability.
  3. Use representative content. Test with the motion, scene changes, and audio the live stream will actually contain. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast (YouTube live encoder settings).
  4. Run it long enough to expose problems. Watch for dropped frames, interruptions, audio drift or loss, and temperature-related performance changes. Also test what happens after restarting the machine and after a network interruption; do not assume recovery is automatic.
  5. Measure operating cost on the intended setup. Use a wall-power meter with the actual source, encoder, peripherals, network, and operating settings. Compare the measurements for the two candidate systems rather than relying on generalized estimates.

If an old PC already passes the workload and its measured power use is acceptable, reusing it avoids buying hardware whose ability to handle the same stream is unverified. A Raspberry Pi is a reasonable candidate for a simple feed when its exact encoder and software path passes the same test. This is a workload-based decision, not a claim that either device is inherently more reliable or cheaper.

Set YouTube output settings the machine can sustain

YouTube’s live-encoder guidance recommends RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). Its recommended H.264 video bitrates include 6 Mbps at 720p30, 10 Mbps at 1080p30, and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. These are platform recommendations, not evidence that a particular Raspberry Pi or PC can encode at those settings.

Choose quality to fit the available upload connection. YouTube advises running an upload speed test and testing before going live; it also recommends monitoring stream health once broadcasting. A quality setting that looks suitable on paper is not useful if the connection cannot maintain it. For a detailed production, remember that encoding is only one part of the workload: OBS scenes and other processing also affect capacity.

OBS generally recommends modern hardware encoding where available because it moves work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. Its documentation cautions that earlier-generation hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than software x264 using its default veryfast preset. Check the particular encoder generation and software support; “has a GPU” is not enough to establish the best path for a given system (OBS hardware encoding).

Raspberry Pi model, interfaces, and power supply

Raspberry Pi models differ in memory, interfaces, and power requirements. Raspberry Pi’s hardware reference, for example, lists Raspberry Pi 4 Model B memory configurations up to 8 GB and Raspberry Pi 500 with 8 GB and Gigabit Ethernet. Those specifications help identify what a board offers; they do not demonstrate that it can sustain a particular live-stream encoding workload (Raspberry Pi hardware documentation).

Use a power supply appropriate to the exact model and its connected devices. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance specifies 5 V/5 A for Pi 5 and Pi 500 (with 5 V/3 A limiting peripherals), 5 V/3 A for Pi 4 and Pi 400, and 5 V/2.5 A for Pi 3. Peripherals can affect power needs, so check the requirements for the board and attached hardware you will actually use (Raspberry Pi setup documentation).

Raspberry Pi’s hardware reference also includes approximate power measurements for Pi 1 through Pi 4 under particular test setups using a standard OS image from 2016, or from 2019 for Pi 4, with a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and specified network connection. The documentation says the measurements are approximate and that extra USB devices can increase consumption. They are not Pi 5 measurements and cannot be compared directly with an unspecified old PC.

Common problems and how to diagnose them

  • Stream drops frames or the encoder falls behind: reduce the output resolution or frame rate, simplify OBS scenes, and check whether the selected CPU or hardware encoder is supported and keeping up. Test again using representative motion and audio.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: check the upload connection and bitrate before blaming the computer. Run an upload speed test, choose a setting the connection can sustain, and observe stream health during a test broadcast.
  • Video is unstable after adding peripherals: on a Raspberry Pi, verify that the supply suits the model and connected devices. Review attached hardware and retest rather than relying on the board’s headline specification.
  • The stream does not resume after a restart or interruption: test restart and network-loss behavior before leaving the channel unattended. The reviewed platform and hardware guidance does not establish an automatic recovery setup for a particular DIY configuration.
  • The stream starts but degrades during a longer run: a successful launch only confirms that the initial setup worked. Run a sustained test and monitor dropped frames, audio continuity, and temperature or throttling indicators.
