To add overlays, alerts, or widgets to a YouTube Live stream, configure them with a provider such as StreamElements or Streamlabs, copy the overlay URL, then add it to your OBS scene as a Browser source. Adjust its size and position, place it above the content it should cover, and test it before going live. OBS Studio does not generate alerts itself; it displays alerts supplied by a provider.
Choose how to add your overlay or alerts
| Approach | What it does | When it may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Browser source with a provider URL | Loads a hosted overlay or widget into an OBS scene. | A general-purpose setup that does not require a provider plugin. |
| StreamElements overlay | Lets you combine elements such as alerts, chat, labels, and goals in an overlay editor, then render them in OBS through a Browser source. | Useful when you want multiple widgets in one hosted overlay. StreamElements says its editor can be used without coding for a basic setup. |
| Streamlabs Alert Box | Adds alerts through Streamlabs Desktop, its OBS plugin, or a Browser source in other streaming software. | Useful if you already use Streamlabs alert customization and test tools. |
Choose based on the event types and widgets you need, how much control you want over appearance and alert variations, and whether you prefer a URL-based Browser source or a software plugin. Provider features and dashboard labels can change, so confirm availability and current instructions in the provider’s own interface.
Add a hosted overlay or widget to OBS
- Select the scene. In OBS, choose the scene where the overlay or widget should appear. Sources determine what is visible in that scene.
- Configure the overlay. In your provider’s dashboard or editor, choose the visual elements and alert events you want. Save the configuration before copying its URL.
- Copy the URL privately. Treat the overlay URL as sensitive: StreamElements warns that it contains tokens linked to your account. Do not post or share it publicly.
- Add a Browser source. In OBS’s Sources dock, click the plus button and choose Browser. Name the source if useful, then paste the provider URL into its properties.
- Set the dimensions. Match the source’s width and height to the overlay layout and your stream canvas. StreamElements documents 1920×1080 as its default unless the source resolution has been changed. It suggests 30 or 60 FPS depending on stream settings and computer capability; these are guidance defaults, not requirements for every setup.
- Position and layer it. Drag the source in the OBS preview. In the Sources list, items higher in the list appear above items lower down. Put the overlay above the camera, game capture, or background when it needs to cover them.
- Test before broadcasting. Use the provider’s test function and check the animation, sound, size, position, and event selection. Streamlabs documents testing from its dashboard or software.
Use a Streamlabs plugin or another route
Streamlabs documents adding its Alert Box through its OBS plugin. That is an alternative to the Browser-source workflow; it is not necessary for every provider or setup. Streamlabs also documents using a Browser source in other streaming software. Whichever route you use, confirm that the intended theme and event-specific settings are active, then test the alert before going live.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect overlays
- Nothing appears: Check that the Browser source is enabled in the selected scene and that its properties contain the correct provider URL. Trigger a test alert in the provider dashboard or software.
- The overlay is clipped or misplaced: Adjust the Browser source dimensions and reposition it in the preview. If you use StreamElements, check whether its documented 1920×1080 default suits your canvas or whether the source resolution was changed.
- The overlay hides your camera or game: Reorder the sources. Sources higher in OBS’s list render above sources lower down.
- The wrong alert style or event appears: Check the active theme and the settings for that specific event, save any changes, and test again.
- Alerts or audio play twice across scenes: Check for duplicate alert boxes. StreamElements documents using one alert box across scenes and removing or hiding duplicates to avoid duplicate audio.
- Your overlay URL was exposed: Because the URL contains sensitive tokens, keep it private. If it has been shared publicly, consult the provider’s current account and overlay controls for a way to replace or secure it.
Or let it run in the cloud
Overlays and alerts are part of an OBS production, but if your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded video, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Each slot supports uploaded video as-is up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
